I canceled my 3g plan since it's expensive heren Canada to save 30$ a month. I use wifi now instead and I'm very happy. there is wifi pretty much anywhere I go and our city is gonna have free wifi coverage soon. however I'm unhappy that I only get 5-6 hours of battery life per charge for an iPhone 3GS.

Yeah, you can use any WiFi that you have access to. The data plan that comes with the iPhone enables you to be connected all the time; that is, when you don't have access to WiFi. For example, my iPhone is connecting to the Internet via WiFi when I'm at home, but when I hop in the car there's no WiFi, so my iPhone automatically configures to 3G. So, WiFi is pretty much stationary and 3G is mobile -- on the go.

wifi is WAY better. For one it is way better because....... chances are when your on wifi your near the signal transmitter. But when your on 3G your phone has to "stretch" for a signal. This means because your farther from a tower your phone will use more battery keeping a connection.

thats what I think sucks up the battery on 3G, so I always wifi

every one who talks about the iphone 3g's battery life only mentions wifi and talking usage. But what about if you listen to a lot of music and want to watch some videos during the day as well? i need at least 4-5 hours of music (and maybe some video usage) ON TOP of some moderate calling and internet usage. from looking at all the reviews, i dont think the battery will last even half a day with me. does anyone have some insight?

I use the iPhone 3G for about 4-5 hours of music a day, plus I have Wi-Fi and 3G on and push on MobileMe and it lasts the day for me. If I start using a lot of apps and browsing the web for long periods of time, then it wears out the battery. Compared to other 3G phones the battery life is actually very impressive.

Ive literally turned off every function on my iPhone 3G that possibly drains the battery and on standby it doesnt last more than 10 hours! wasnt it supposed to last 300 hours on standby????? can someone help??

No dude 3G uses a lot of power talking you have better sound quality and since you are getting 3G is using faster talking if you talk with 2 phones you will find out that 3G is faster on getting the phone...... plus it does drain battery if you are going to talk for a long time turn 3G off and then back on when you finish. Remember 3G uses a lot of power.

3G actually does affect call quality in addition to faster data speeds. The sound is much clearing during calls with less "gsm noise" but has a much shorter talk time compared to 2g.

I seriously hope enough people file a complaint with Apple that they will eventually do the right thing and initiate a recall so they can put a proper battery in these pieces of crap!

What's the use of having a phone when you have to continuously turn settings off and brightness down just so you can get one days worth of service from it before having to charge it? It's so F-ing frustrating!!!

I agree with you, it is a nice phone, but the battery life is awful. When I was with T Mobile at my office I can get 3 bars, with IPhone AT&T no signal :( .. I would get rid of the phone but I am stuck with a 2 years contract...

Actually this is wrong.

3G does effect talk time. It gives you only about half as many hours of talk time as an EDGE connection does.

Getting better, 3rd generation is the charm. Most people say that you should just disable 3g and GPS. HELLO!! I'm paying 240 dollars over 2 years for 3g, I damn well want to use it. I hope the next generation addresses more issues and has better battery life.

great videos man i also got the new iphone 3g did u notice that there are like 2 camera holes next to the top speaker on the front of the phone? i just noticed it when i had my phone in the sunlight what do u think that is for?

The "camera holes" are sensors. I believe one is a proximity sensor, so the screen turns off when the phone is near your cheek while on a call. Not sure what the other ones are. But not cameras.

I use wifi because I am currently in Norway and Netcom the official carrier here allows only 100MB of data per month which really sucks compared to the unlimited data in the United States.

when im not using my wi-fi or 3G to connect to the web i turn both networks off and lower down my brightness on the phone.. so it actually gives me a good 3.5 hrs extra of usage.
