I've been hit too, several times, driving forklifts is dangerous that's something you know in advance.

you have to be careful (I never use my honk, but I always slow down at corners and make sure I'm aware of the situation), honking can make a difference to a certain level. At work we only use it when dangerous situations are happening, so when you hear a honk you know there's a danger. But when you honk a 1000 times a day do don't pay attention to it anymore.
