First, make sure you plug it in with Firewire instead of USB. If you record in DV (non high-definition) then you can capture the video really easily by going to Windows Movie Maker (Start - Accessories - Entertainment - Windows Movie Maker) and clicking on File and then Capture.
If you're using High Definition, then things are gonna be more complicated. The good news is that you can capture the video really easily using a free program called HDVsplit (do a google search for HDVsplit and you'll find it).

Yes, but it does not come with a firewire cable or software for video capture. You've got to buy that separate. It's worth it though... the HV20 is an AMAZING camcorder!
royafork. I Just got $750 this week and im deciding on by this camera. Tell me, have you played your videos o n a bigger screen? Does the quality change.
hello which do u think is better? i am having a hard time deciding which to buy either a Panasonic PVGS500 or a canon hv20.. i am looking for a 3ccd 24p mode with not expensive one..
I would say neither... i would go for a Sony as in my opinion they are the best make Cam! I have had 3 different Sony Cams in 4 years and they were all brilliant! I have had 1 Canon... good but seen better... Panasonic were just a waste of time... hope that helps you!
I think the point of the Canon HV20 is not to be as good a camera as the higher-end HD models, but to make HD more affordable. Within its limits it seems pretty good.
If you think the sonys are head and shoulders above the rest check out camcorderinfo on the net. The HV20 is the highest rated consumer camera available. You get a much better picture with HDV then you do with the high end Sonys that use AVCHD format. AVCHD is much more compressed and shows a ton of artifacts and ghosting.
i have hv20 footage also, but posting it on youtube is pointless...they compress the hell out of the clips and make it look horrible....kind apointless uploading HD video to youtube, lol.
The camera really did most of the legwork as far as the quality, other than keeping it steady (no tripod yet) and paying attention to lighting. Play with the settings a bit and import it into your video editing software to see what works for you. It's a nice little camera so far.
what song is this?

This comment has received too many negative votes show
this camera has a horrible rolling shutter problem. if you don't move the camera like in this video all is fine, but if you move it.....

How were you able to remove pulldown on the footage? Did you edit in true native 24p?

Is there a chance you could upload the full resolution footage up somewhere. If you already haven't. Would like to see very much.
simargl 4 years ago
the cat close up looks pretty awesome. Jesus! i could watch HD footage all day and just dream about having £684.99.
simargl 4 years ago
well, the HV20 appear to have high lux, low light sensibility. How much minimal lux has it?.
Come to High Definition Group to say about this.

great video, hey you think the camera is compatible with final cut express ????????

How did you achieve the lighting?? Is it natural light or how??
Olphus 4 years ago
Everything is natural light except the last shot which used a regular old flexi-head floorlamp.

i BEG of you, Im a new user of the canon hv-20, can you tell me how you did this in detail> I'd really like to learn how to get such great shots.

Very sharp and clean. Did you go through a lot of steps from m2t to youtube?

My comment doesn't seem to be showing up. Anyway, I just did Final Cut Pro > Compressor > YouTube using a Compressor-to-YouTube guide I found online.
