  • This may have ended my search for what in the hell is wrong with me! DX in 2008, having terrible pain in leg. Scared it is a flare up of the dreaded MS, but now have hope it may be some other annoying ailment. Glad I found your videos, you are wonderful.

  • @Pommom15 cheers, I'm glad you found it helpful. Yours wonderfully :-)

  • Diagnosed with MS on Dec. 29, 2011. I can relate to the sciatica. It was the most painful experience I've had in my life-and this includes kidney stones and ovarian cysts. And you're right; there is really no easy way to describe how it feels, other than excruciating. Cortisone injection around the sciatic nerve really helped me. I can now actually walk normally again. Best wishes for good health, brother. We're here with you.

  • Thanks. Was diagnosed with MS many years ago and everytime I go to see my neuro, who I love, he tells me I have yet another condition on top of MS. Bladder- some incurable lesion thing. Hooray. Now sciatica. But I suppose that is better than my MS getting worse. I guess in the end it doesn't matter- it is what it is. Or what it isn't. Anyhoo. We are not alone! Thanks for posting this. Take care.

  • Good video. I have had sciatica for years before I was diagnosed with MS...bulging discs in my lower back. Must have been all those years sitting in front of a computer screen, and oh, that giving birth thing too. ;)

I think it is a good idea to mention the things that normally go wrong with our bodies in addition to this damn MS thing.

On a side note... I think you look a bit like a young Max Von Sydow. :)

Hope you are well and the wires are quiet. Mine are buzzing incessantly.

  • @TheGothicRosie When I grow up, I wanna be an exorcist. Or Ming the Merciless! Mark (irishbear76) is Michael Madsen. You can be Isabella Rossellini, I suppose...

  • I know what you mean, wrong phse of the moon and so on, I was giving up since day one. No effort is required, just remind yourself "I am not this desire" and it will disappear.

  • Good topic Toby. I injured my back (L5 disc bulge), a few yrs prior to official MS diagnosis. Initially Neuro could not verify MS even after MRI since some have lesions on brain and not MS and symtoms overlap, ie. neuropathic pain in feet and legs, foot drop etc. also symptoms of spinal prob. I'm sure my MS was lurking around before back injury though. The injury probably hastened onset of MS because of pain & stress etc. and/or MS made me more prone to back probs.

    as you explained.

    Rick.

  • @rickileeway cheers Rick. An L5 disc bulge sounds very ouch. I'm getting the impression that back probs of all kinds are pretty common for MSers, eh? I'm learning so much about physiology, these last three years, in my amateurish way. Did you know that the sciatic nerve is as thick as a thumb?

  • MS story, if you stop smoking you may come to a full stop your self..? no more rocket fuel. Wrongness is arisig in a Perfect God.

  • @Alexknobsob Fags are my Faustian pact mate. Life shortening but life enhancing - even life enabling. Trying to quit, at least in my current circumstances, would just send me bonkers.

  • I think you are absolutely correct.

The sciatica is a comorbidity with MS.

The fact is, those of us with MS who ambulate cause major stress on parts of our body from compensating for numb feet, foot drop and a myriad of other MS blessings.

I like the idea of not writing everything off to MS and always being aware of other diseases and disorders lurking and lying in wait.

    Warm regards,

    M

  • @irishbear76 "comorbidity" eh? Impressive sounding. That can be my new word of the day. I'll try to remember to use it next time I see the doc ;-)

  • i have MS since 1995. my guess is your sciatica a consequence of your gait. lesions don't cause that kind of pain you described.

by the way when my walking started to deteriorate in 2002 i developed sciatica within weeks.

    The sandwhich

  • @astronautsandwitch Hello Sandwich, I've heard of you, nice to finally meet! Yeah, I think the pain was sciatica. But the numbness (and 'burning' skin, which I didn't mention) was MS - also the foot drag. Confusing when they're all mixed up together though...I'm only really making sense of it all now...x

  • @astronautsandwitch P.S. also, of course, my (fairly mild) spasticity and poor articulation in the hip region was caused by MS, not sciatica. I think I probably started the sciatica by 'jerking' my steps out too much, too often...

  • Great topic! I know that when I have something wierd going on I have to really pay attention and not just think it is MS related. I have had severe sciatica years ago when I put my back out. Will never forget that kind of pain again! Glad that you are feeling so much better these days.

  • @MSVlogSupport cheers Andrea. Glad you like the topic. Yep, sciatica is a pain in the bum (literally - I didn't mention that bit). Sorry you had it also. Did it clear up quickly? And do you think your MS caused it?

  • @lovingfatalist I had taken a lot of falls, tripping over my own feet etc. This was in the 90's, I just woke up one day and could not move. It took 10 mins to just ge out of the bed. I think I had MS back then, but was not diagnosed until 2005.

Because my back went out so bad I looked like my body was in a S shape, I had to do PT and lots of strecthing like you talked about. I still have a bit of a curve in my spine.
