The Leafs couldn't even get a top line forward like Kessel on his own for Kaberle without also giving up their 1st round pick.

Kaberle wasn't even in the top 50 for defenseman in points and he's terrible defensively. Yes, he missed a few games, but there are defenseman who only played 50 games and still have more points than him. Hagman was on pace for 27 this year if he hadn't got hurt, and he'll probably get even more playing time, not to mention his linemates (grabovski and kulemin) will get more experience and improve. I could see Kulemin turning into Steen but he looks like he has a lot more talent.
