There are some bands that write really good fast, heavy music. Then there's those bands that write really good, melodic slower songs. Then there's Dream Theater, who write great regardless of speed.
The part that starts at 2:50 is the perfect exemple of DT's talent. Cause it's a pop meldy that could be another shit from Britney Spears or Lady Gaga. But this melody on a DT's song is just an eargasm cause they are so talented.
I feel like i'm sinning when i don't listen to metropolis part one followed by the whole of part two as one whole song, but i love this ending so much i thought i'd treat myself :D on the 'one last time' references that julian says to victoria in this it makes me want to cry ):
I was happier not knowing the lyrics to this song. I was thinking they'd thrown in one or two lines that aren't completely literal. Sadly, I look it up now, find out what I thought might be him saying "in a plethora of fugue." Nope, it's just more menial lyrics which says "in a pathway out of view." Why Dream Theater? Why are you such good musicians but such horrific lyricists?
@Megadethication I have done that. As regards that, two major things come into mind: 1. A good lyricist will not require outside information to make sense of his lyrics short of literary allusion, for example, TMV says in a song "these ides of march are they so make-believe," the "ides of march" being from Julius Caesar, much different from looking up an entire external story. 2. The story is stereotypical and hacknied and his lyrics are as if he has the vocab of a 15 year old.
@MorTolking Hey, I've liked Metropolis Pt. 2 for several years now, it's one of my favorite albums. I just think the guy is a horrible lyricist. What specific genre are you talking about? I consider these guys part of the overall prog rock genre, and, as far as prog rock goes, King Crimson and The Mars Volta have the greatest lyrics I've heard.
@LeftBehindForDead Lol the minute I started reading you reply I knew u'd bring up King Crimson :)
I was talking specifically about *modern* prog, I always had trouble comparing bands Like Dream Theater or Porcupine Tree to what I consider true prog bands like King Crimson & Camel. Well I guess we're all entitled to having our own opinions, personally I think the guy is a genius, the story in Scenes from a Memory is so theatrical, u hardly see (well, hear) those kinda things these days.. :)
@johnpetruccirocks11 " ' " signifies a missing letter or word, I could put 2 but that'd look strange. Just shut up and enjoy the song, and please be more tolerant.
Anybody knows if the the hypnotherapist in the begining is Antony Hopkins? His voice is almost the same. If it is anyone can tell the from which movie it is? Thanks.
@xXSTFDXx man, its a good thing you corrected him. his bad grammar was thoroughly detrimental to the integrity of the entire internet, as a whole. you sure put him in his place. hopefully he has learned his lesson, and we can all live in peace, without fear.
@Megadave020 idunno what point your trying to make. mine was that i hate obsessive grammar nazis. especially the kind who cant even get a positive comment or a compliment, without head-diving right for the grammatical corrections. so... in the name of solidarity, i decided to grant him some of my own time and effort. then you decided to make yourself heard, and now im repaying you the effort. hello there. how are you?
@zegh8578 I was trying to make a point that one shouldn't care if someone makes a grammar error, that I could be a lot worse, and I shouldn't represent how the internet doesn't spell correctly.
@Megadave020 then you misunderstood my original response. that was my point as well, only "sarcastified". for the very most part, i think communication should concern wether or not the message is coming across. litterature is another matter, but on the internet i couldnt care less about grammar. i rarely bother to adhere to the grammatical rules of english. hi five!
@zegh8578 Agreed. Hopefully you're not being sarcastic now ha ha..But, yeah, it's the internet. people shouldn't care about stuff like that unless it's in a book or magazine or article on the web.
i used to listen to this song when i was really little. my dad and i and are still dream theater fans. listening to this brings back great memories :')
@deckervideos Try the album "In Absentia", by porcupine tree, and "Damnation" by Opeth. It's as "relaxing", "deep", beautiful, nostalgic and well, for lack of a better word, "magical" as soft prog rock can get. Specially In Absentia.
You, my friend, are awesome. Those 2, and Pink Floyd are the only bands I could recommend that will get you the same reactions, emotions and feelings as DT does. Nothing else really compares in my opinion. They should make a new genre for them called goosebump generating music.
@JoshStobart strictly musically this album may not be the best out there, but as a whole matter, in my opinion this is the best album already. To be honest IDK if we should still call this 'thing' an 'album', not a 'song'.
im gonna miss vintage dream theater...mike mangini is an unbelievable drummer, but its not the drumming that dream theater is gonna miss out on by not having portnoy its so much more!!..idk i cud literally go on about this subject for sooo long.. this band has been my favorite band since i was 2 im now 17..they have literally gotten me through life through their music, so many different moods in there songs!!! WARNING: Do NOT take viagra before listening to this song. Your erection WILL last for more than 4 hours and you will have to consult a physician or listen to a Justin Bieber song.
DT has changed the way i think about music they are amazing every song they have created is meaningful and every song has so much depth every time i hear dream i find somthing new that i did't hear before
@LesVideosDeJet I don't know, maybe a guy called Nicholas that felt a scar in his heart and didn't know what was causing it, went to a psychician (?) and wanted to do a Regression, then, the guy went back to 1928 and saw a girl called Victoria that was killed by Nicholas' Bro... Nicholas knew that he fell in love with Victoria and Nicholas' Bro was jealous. At the end, Nicholas woke up in the modern day and went back to his house and I don't know if it was Nicholas' Bro but someone killed him...
@AfroBenevolence IIRC, it's part of this whole cycle from a song on the Images and Words album "Metropolis Part I: The miracle and the sleeper", where basically one person is always the killer and one of the others is always the victim. In this one, Nicholas is basically Victoria's reincarnation (hence why he identifies with her) and according to the band, the psychiatrist was the reincarnation of the brother that killed them. Both became aware of it during the therapy. So he killed him.
I just find it amazing that most dream theater songs sound so different yet awesome at the same time.
