Hi, Thank you for the tip on using a jigsaw for cutting curves. I'm guessing your video over cutting straight lines with a circular saw would be the same principle for the jigsaw, but could you make a video on how to cut straight lines using a jigsaw. I'm having trouble cutting straight across mdf boards.
@FanOfEverything1000 Using a jigsaw to cut a straight line is like using a butter knife to carve a turkey. It's simply the WRONG tool. Jigsaws are made to cut tight curves. Get out your circular saw.
@EddyVEVO If you'd rather buy it then why are you watching these videos? They are made for people who WANT to be able to do these things themselves. Who should more proud? The person who said he bought it? Or the person who said he MADE it?
Bosch is the best jigsaw out there in my 25 years of experience.stable enough to cut a smooth radius when dialed in,and light enough to cope heavy crown moulding, such as 7 1/4 oak ,this saw has cut my coping time in half, and less tired after a days worth of cutting.good bye coping saw, goodbye tennis elbow
Great point. How would you tape the video showing close up shots? Repaint the tool? Put tape over the name? Let's see you do the same video on your channel, but in such a way it passes your smell test. Let us know here when you've uploaded the video to your channel.
Thats a good video but the guide roller isn't going to do a brilliant job of keeping the blade at 90 degrees. Bosch have precision control on some of their jigsaws now which is a clamping mechanism and this keeps it very straight.
Indeed, this is just one manufacturer's solution to the age-old problem of blade drift. No doubt there will be better and better advancements. Thanks for commenting.
Some years ago, I had to replace my 1977 Craftsman scrolling saber saw; bough one from Sears with similar features, took it home and found that I couldn't cut a strait or curved line neatly; it jumped all over. It was similar on the outside, but Sears had cut out a feature that made to old one much easier to use: counter-rotating balance wheels. I bough a similar Skill model; that has been fine. Call me a wuss, but I couldn't work without both the scrolling feature and the vib. cancellation.
wow, I didnt expect you to reply that quick,,, if at all!!!!
Thank you again,
will any circular saw do this, on the pictures they all seem to have a guard on the bottom... also with a jigsaw how do you cut in?? just push it downwards? or do you need a special blade?
Drill a pilot hole for the jigsaw. The circular saw requires you to slowly drop the spinning blade into the wood. It's VERY dangerous...... DON'T do it. Have a pro demonstrate it.
thank you very much for all your help! Hopefully in a few weeks you will see a few more comments from me,,,, if you don't, I might have lopped my hands off :-) (I shouldnt really joke) Cheers again and keep those vids coming!!!
drill a hole inside your square using a drill bit big enough that the blade of a jig saw blade will fit into. then of course get after it with a jig saw.
Hello tim, I am a certified industrial arts instructor. I teach safety and operation on the jig saw every year to my students. Although you get what you pay for on tools, tell your viewers to always buy a good blade. especially a little thicker, not wider, but thicker, good quality blades. That usually prevents the blade from bending. Also do not cut right near the edge, having wood on both sides of the blade keeps it straighter.
When I cut with my jigsaw it doesn't really cut perpendicular with the flat surface plane of the wood. What can I do to prevent this? Is it technique or could it be low quality tool (fyi- it is a cheap jigsaw cost me $20-30)
Thanx for the tips.I'm getting ready to saw for the first time and this info has given me the confidence to do what I need to do.Thanx again and if all goes well hotlava141.If not, just call me Nubby!LOL!!!
I am inferring that this should be my FIRST power saw purchase because of its versatility. Would you agree? I've been loving ALL your videos. Thanks for posting.
That is a TOUGH question. I actually would disagree. A circular saw is far more powerful, and you can cut curved lines with a circular saw. You do that with a special blade shaped like a dinner plate AND setting the blade depth to be 1/16th-inch deeper that the object being cut.
Your method will work, but the stiffer blade on a circular saw makes nice cuts. I saw an unbelievable circular saw years ago at a Sears Editors Conference that could saw solid metal up to 1/8-inch thick. It had two blades that spun in opposite directions.

You are using the wrong tool. Jigsaws, in my opinion, should not be used to cut anything thicker than 3/4 inch.
AsktheBuilder 3 years ago
How thick can the wood be before it gets stuck?
shamushi 3 years ago
It is hard to cut anything over 1.5 inches.

I don't believe i saw a saw like this in the SAW movies.Hahaha!

i'm in middle and i'm in a wood working class! i used a saw that was almost like that, but my teacher referred it to a saber saw!

That is a slang term for this saw.

I have a very old jigsaw. The features on this new version, such as the fan blowing the saw dust out of the way, are awesome. Great info.

Don't get rid of that old saw! Some are very valuable. Many tool collectors would be interested.

Youll get more versatility out of a circular saw.
emutiny 4 years ago
I suppose it's easier to cut straight with a circular saw, but you could also clamp a batten to your piece to use as a fence for your jigsaw.
Also, can circular saws really cut metal? Personally, my money is on the jigsaw. Stay away from cheap ones, though.
