  • it seemed to me that horowitz in his later years resorted to banging to get the sonority and "passion" when the going got tough. the early eighties was not a good time for horowitz. his playing became even more distorted i thought and inaccurate. it's funny to hear people excuse horowitz pretending to hear greater depthn and artistry and critcize the "technical virtuosi of the modern world." now there's an original thought...horowitz was highly criticized as one of those in his younger years.

  • this is NOT Horowitz plying the piano. there where many slips and i have heard Horowitz playing this peice before.

unless he was drunk or something, which i doubt it

  • @farah73 i doubt whether horowitz has EVER played this piece note-perfect. What makes his interpretation(s) so special and highly regarded is the amount of emotion and drama he puts into his playing. If I wanted to hear a note-for-note etude-like recording i'd go to one of millions of technical virtuosi from the modern world, but I don't...i want to hear the tortured, half-insane emotional bleeding that Scriabin originally wrote, and horowitz can capture that feeling like no other.

  • @fledgehog

what you said makes a lot of sense. I like your point of view.

the "Forte" was indeed Horowitz style. but i think i've heard him play it better or something, check the videos to the right and you'll find it.

however, i just listened to the whole thing, and the duration of the applause was indeed for a master

    i think i rushed a little there :)

  • Awesome performance! Thanks a lot for posting.

In 80s Horowitz played this as a etude, as he did in the 60s, but rather as poem for piano. The dynamics and the climax are just stuninng.

  • again that almost infinite ability to fill space. who would know it would come from that man up there onstage?

  • such great sonority

  • it filled that hall perfectly - hand into glove.

  • This interpretation is different from some of the recorded versions. Very nice to hear. I love the audience clamoring for more.! the declamatory bad humor comes later maybe it is seething .A few things are different here.

  • lovesGenet - when i want to hear how horowitz could fill a hall with storming sound, this is what i listen to.

  • What a Steinway !

  • it is sent on tour at the various steinway halls throughout the u.s. and one is allowed to play it a bit. i did, twice, and both times were deeply moving to me.

  • Which Pasadena? Maryland, California or Texas?

  • california - at the old ambassador college auditorium. as far as i know, he never played in those two other pasadenas.

  • I love it when famous pianists play more mistakes than I do ;) Still wonderful mr. Horo.

  • Not bad for an old man!

This is much better than the London performance, bravo!

  • Thank you!

  • babelfish: es mi placer traer estas cosas que he gozado privado para tan de largo a los amantes de la música:)

  • los españoles probablemente malos del babelfish, pero usted son agradables - uploading más pronto:)
