Sterling Marlin had a good car that day. He basically screwed himself by wrecking Jeff and causing the right front tire rub. Ward got lucky but he also did well to stay in position through the thick and thin of the race. Too bad he's not around. When he returned in 2007, I can remember how happy I was. Ward was a great driver, i wish he coulda got on with hendricks or roush, with the right equipment and teammates he woulda been a threat to win at damn near every track. i miss that little dude.

I read somewhere, a long time ago, that coming out of the Busch series, Ward was offered the ride in the 24 car, which was just starting up, and turned it down out of loyalty to the team he was driving for in the Busch series which was moving up to Cup. That's when Gordon got the 24 car. The team Ward stuck with, the Hardee's 31, was basically a wash out in Cup, and he was stuck with low & middle grade teams the rest of his career.
