President Obama should make a speech like this one to the American people. We have a dangerous climate change denial epidemic in the United States.
Call Obama at 202-456-1111 to suggest that he speak up about climate. Go to the "Presidential Climate Address" page on Facebook to 'like' this idea. Ask your friends to do the same.
We need to act now to protect all of God's children from man-made climate change. Waiting until it is obvious to all will be far too late. Do it now!
Republicans do not believe in science. That being said, we are doomed as long as they re involved in any decision making that effects the future of this country. We need to elect more people who can use their intellect to make decisions. We need more people like Senator Whitehouse.
The tooth fairy is fiction, climate change is very real and is the reaction to
conditions within the earth's atmosphere. Have you ever heard of the ice age? What was that a tale of fiction? Why do people feel this is still debatable? Do you think the sun orbits the earth or do you feel that scientists have throughly proven that is not the case? Where are you getting your facts from a cereal box? This is the most inane debate I've ever been involved in...NEXT!
JonThm do you live in a cave? Yes plants can and do metabolize carbon dioxide however the rate that they are able to metabolize is not equal to the rate we are pumping carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. Deforestation and the progress of man is decimating plant life at a rate you clearly are not aware of. If economic conditions in China improve to a point where everyone owns a car as we do here in the US the result will be catostrophic. You need to do your research and stop quoting politicians.
The limit to life on earth is available carbon dioxide for plants to metabolise. Into carbohydrates and their waste, oxygen. Man made climate change is fiction from nuclear power. And the stupid.
We cannot continue to ignore these issues as a global community.
We are so close to the edge of a completely irreversible situation.
It's confusing as there are so many other important issues around at the moment - economy, war, unemployment, social issues... but looked at in perspective, this issue is perhaps the most important and the most terrifying.
@JonThm don't waste time trying to figure out the ramblings of people who still think the earth is flat. Anyone with a brain knows that you can't pollute the atmosphere endlessly without concequence. Science is not something to be believed it exits whether you "believe" it or not.
Everything the Senator says is accurate according to what I've learned in my university's "Energy" class. It's also very important to watch the changes the ocean is going through. The acidification of the waters is very harmful to our total biosphere.
I've been sitting here for a while now trying to figure out what "biologically impossible" in relation to climate change could actually mean and I'm still having a lot of trouble.
Great speech, Senator. Just so you know, the general populace is also very aware of climate change and many of them are already speaking of this Congress with scorn. I have changed my life as much as possible to reduce my own carbon footprint, as have many of my friends, including giving up my car.
Why are we not being better supported by the people we elected to run this country? Why does it so often seem like they are working against us? Again thank YOU, Senator, for your support.
Biology makes it impossible for mankind to affect the carbon dioxide level in the air. Which has remained constant for 200 years. This is high school biology you know. Climate change is fatal fiction from nuclear power and the stupid. As here.
High school biology. You were taught in high school that the limit to life on earth was available carbon dioxide in the air for plants to metabolise. Harvard University has noted that free carbon dioxide in the air has not increased over last two centuries. But crop yields have gone up by 15%. This is my PH D area: so I can assure you enough time talking about. You obviously don’t.
@JonThm Wow...the whole University noted?? Name the individual and sources. And also, your poor grammar just discredited you from being a PHD or even a high school graduate.
@EC2DESIGN I have an M.Eng in engineering. We are not noted for our English. But for an intelligence. Sheffield University are investigating how a steam plasma does molecular nuclear fusion. Sorry for helium as above two syllables. Which you were obviously require.
@EC2DESIGN any high school biology book tells you that the limit to life on earth is available carbon dioxide in the air; for green plants to take in an do photosynthesis. Sheffield University are investigating how a steam plasma is do nuclear fusion from regular water. Power with no toxic plutonium
As a student who has been studying climate change for 8 years, this is an incredibly well informed public servant about a complex scientific issue. If only climate deniers could articulate their arguments as clearly as Senator Whitehouse. Its nice to see not everyone has forgotten about climate change on capital hill. Perhaps, he will be around to fillibuster or put a secret hold any legislation in the future to benefit the fossil fuel industry.
They deny evolution, they deny global climate change, they deny the entire scientific community which includes all the scientists in the world factual educated concensus. They deny the earth is more than 6000 years old. This is fucking moronic. It's an utterly mortifying embarrassment for us to have all the world understand reality and the world look at our leaders who deny reality. It's so fucking embarrassing. This is America. We used to be the leaders of innovation and technology! WE USED TO
Thank God this conversation is actually happening and perhaps in the presence of respectful active listening. Could be that conscience is being awakened and conscious action will result.
Unless we not only completely change our energy generation and infrastructure + start building huge atmospheric CO2 extractors our future generations are doomed to food shortages/misery. Siberia is beginning to outgas CH4 from the tundra and below the shallow seas off the coast. Western Anatarctica is showing significant changes. The climate deniers and the large corp. that have contrib. to lies must be brought to court and their assets used for building new infrastructure, econ, + mitigation
@JonThm so your saying you know better than every scientific establishment.
btw. a report paid for by climate denialists has today confirmed the consensus of man made warming of 1 centigrade so far. i think the intention was to debunk every scientific establishment in the world by looking at the data 'properly', but it backfired magnificently. haha!
I just wish congressmen from my state had 1/2 the testosterone making organs to face truth and speak the truth about climate change this guy has. Instead a couple have actually had visits from the 'Coch' brothers to have their opinions changed to championing coal and oil after being 'talked to' in ultra private meetings.

Truth-telling is so powerful - thank you, Senator Whitehouse, for telling the truth to Power and the Polluters. The eyes of the future are looking at all of us, asking us to do the same in our circles.
@JonThm You don't even have any idea what your talking about. Carbon dioxide is an important element in our eco-system. This is not what the problem is. You need to either let the scientists of the world do their job and if you want to understand it then make an effort to learn so. If not just shut up
Every American should watch this address. As horrible as he made climate change sound, he was actually understating the severity of the consequences. Once you factor in heat waves, drought, flooding, disruptions to electric and transportation infrastructure, spikes in food prices, lower fresh water availability, and more, the picture becomes even more bleak.
What is this?! A scientifically literate and honest politician speaking out against the lies and stupidity pushed by the giant fossil polluters and their puppet politicians? GTFO.
A bleak and heartbreaking thought... Moreso as you know DAMN well that the bought and paid for powers will kowtow to the lobbyists until the demise of the Human Species.

@JonThm Additionally, human expansion has lead to extensive deforestation which reduces the carbon sink rate. The combined effect of adding carbon while simultaneously reducing the carbon sinks is the cause of climate change as we see it today.

By burning fossil fuels, we are reintroducing carbon back into the atmosphere which has been locked up for millions of years. @JonThm There is something called the carbon cycle. The carbon is distributed on the surface, in the air, and in the earth.
By burning the fossil fuels, we disrupt the balance by having too great of a proportion of carbon in the atmosphere.
Plants have a limit at which they absorb CO2. "As carbon dioxide concentrations rise, the rate at which sugars are made by the light-independent reactions increases until limited by other factors"
@trisha317 green plants have converted all man is additional carbon dioxide into extra life on earth. There is two little too seriously affect even more Life Systems. None to affect tthe weather
In the last 200 years green plants have converted all man is carbon dioxide into additional life on earth. It is an additional 0.0000127% extra carbon dioxide per day for last two centuries

Your life is only possible because green plants metabolise all the carbon dioxide from the air. Man has increased life on earth. Not affected the natural weather. Which changes, get over it
@JonThm Plants use CO2, yes, but only in conjunction with other resources. Drought, heat, and other factors force plants to slow or stop photosynthesis, at which point they put OUT more CO2 than they pull IN, and they don't produce oxygen. CO2 is good, but too much of it is very, very bad.
It's like any other substance we need - too much of it is dangerous.
@JonThm Yes, plants metabolise carbon dioxide... but they have a limit! They can only absorb so much! When you have too much carbon dioxide in the air, the plants cant metabolise it anymore. Then, the excess carbon dioxide gets absorbed into the atmosphere and into our oceans.. which causes climate change. It's not "natural weather" that is being affected -- it's the climate, which changes the weather. But... the weather isn't changing to 'pleasant' weather. It's drought, storms, and floods.
