People are saying on here that they know Jack and Meg White, and it's freaking annoying. First off, they don't play rock and roll, they play modern blues/punk rock. Jack is an amazing guitar player no doubt. But Meg isn't the best drummer but she knows what she is doing, and if she didn't then she wouldn't be playing with Jack. And he isn't the person who sets the tone to his guitars. He hires major professionals to set his tone.
People complaining about Meg's drumming should take a laxative and relax. It's rock and roll. If you watch the documentary "this might get loud" Jack explains his philosophy. He's about feel and style not precision. Look at half the instruments he uses. They are mostly crap but give him the sound he wants. He is a musical genius no doubt. Anyone here trying to second guess his decisions is an idiot. He choose meg because she is imperfect like his guitars. But what a brilliant result.
I've played drums for years and i can tell you that meg is not a bad drummer, nor is she a exceptional one. she may not be playing at a normal/equal tempo to jack, however, she is very consistent with the beat.
@0AllForNaught0, Meg is not a talented drummer, i agree. but she can hold a beat, and she knows how to play with Jack. The whole point of the white stripes is the simplicity of it. They're not going for expert musicianship or technicality. I think thats pretty obvious.
How can she be losing timing when its their song? All artist change little things of their songs...when have u heard two seperate recordings that sound alike? Even if she fucks up...its their creation! to the oned complaining .....eat a dick!
Meg is a shitty drummer, period. That's why Jack spent most of his interviews defending her contribution to TWS. I would too if my friend and wife were being insulted. Rock history is loaded with loose drummers that play based on feel+technique, and earn greatness. Meg plays on feel, and earns criticism, deservedly.
You assholes that call it 'art' would appreciate a dead fly, or a turd on a blank canvas. I'd rather check out some craftsmanship - which Jack has.
@opiiatee Really? Who am I being an asshole to? Any ways: A lot of people can keep a "solid beat" on anything: drums, kitchenware, my balls slapping against your mom's taint to the rhythm of 'Word Up' by Cameo , or what have you - that doesn't make them famous though, does it? In fact, by today's standards, you really don't have to be good at much of anything to make serious cash, so low have people's standards become. I mean, have you SEEN Wolfmother?!?
@0AllForNaught0 You're being an asshole in general. You still are. Whether Meg does complex fills or Bonham-esque solos or not she's still a good drummer, and still one half of The White Stripes (RIP) Everyone knows Jack is the creative force in the band and you could argue that he could have picked anyone to drum for him...but he wanted Meg to drum, and so she did, and did a good job for all of the years that they were active. Calling her a shitty drummer is just an immature comment.
@opiiatee Dude - she can't keep time. Are you even listening?? I have nothing against Meg being White Stripes drummer whatsoever, but acting all "gallant" (lol) and buthurt because I'm pointing out that fact is no reason to lie to yourself.
I'm here because I LIKE this shit, not to complain. I just dropped the simple fact that saying "she can keep a beat" is bullshit. She can't even keep the kick drum in time, and watches Jack for cues - lol.
@0AllForNaught0 How the hell do you hear her losing her timing when she's the one keeping the time? Meg doesn't fall out of tempo once in this video, or any other video I've seen of them. If anything Jack is the one who loses Megs count, because he's singing as well. And you're asking me if I'm listening.
@0AllForNaught0 Meg doesn't miss a beat the whole video, you should listen carefully. As for watching Jack for cues, if it helps her, then leave her be.
im not sayin megs a bad drummer, i love her style too but shes not the only one who has style. Just chek Chad Smith out, the drummer of the red hot chili peppers :D
check how is she complates jack , music is just not all about technique knowlage . It requests spirit , excitement and much more .. They are so good couple on music I believe.
I love this band and the song is sublime. Everyone once in a while you get a band or an artist that really makes an impact, and this is one of them. BTW If you like this check out my music, it has a similar kind of vibe.
@TheGoldenWater So true. After listening to that amazing guitar, it would've been nice to hear a wicked drum solo, but instead we get missed beats and soft hits. I don't know enough music to name a good drummer, but I want to see someone else paired with Jack White.
@TheBSG What absolute crap!! As Jack always said TWS sound is her. You only have to listen to the lamentable Raconteurs to see how ordinary drumming just saps Jack's sound!! The White Stripes are more than music. They are art. Replace Meg with a standard session drummer and you get a standard little band. Thank Christ Jack acknowledges that completely!!
@TheDyson11 I certainly can't say I know the first thing about drumming, but am I hallucinating missed beats and bad timing? Seriously, I'm not just trying to troll her, it just stuck out to me the very first time I heard this.
@TheBSG I just think that if you compare TWS and its vitality with most modern Rock/Blues outfits they just sound so fresh and exciting. Jack said Meg's drumming is what the stripes are about and I agree. Just imagine The Sex Pistols or The Ramones if they replaced the musicians with superb session players!! I think it would be soulless and bland. It is her drumming that he feeds off. As Cthulhussama says above...."Technique is not music". Jack picked Meg BECAUSE she plays like she does.
@TheDyson11 So basically yes, she is missing beats and some people think that's super artistic except me. Considering you didn't address my question, that's all I can assume.
@TheBSG You are right. There is the odd missed beat. Just as Jack can hit the wrong note occasionally. But this rawness of Meg's is exactly what he wants and why they sound so great. Listen to The Who when Keith Moon is hyper. He misses beats on occasion that ADDS to the music. Great old blues guitarists often miss beats and this prevents the music being bland and, indeed, makes for better music. Meg is the most mesmerising and interesting drummer playing today.
@TheDyson11 Now that's a bit better of an argument, however I think the musicians you mentioned have wonderful technique, and their laxed or missed beats add style and fervor because they often play ironically or with a certain style that is on point. Especially in the case of Keith Moon, in which the missed beats are often pronounced and self aware. I can't help but think meg's missed beats are unintentional signs of poor form. That said, I still enjoy the music. It can simply be distracting.
@TheBSG I think we can agree to differ. Although we both come to the same conclusion.....the music is great. However, I am still with Jack on this one; he always tried to stop Meg practicing so it would keep that wonderful rawness. Without that drum beat he said you have no White Stripes. Apparently her playing inspired many TWS songs. I just couldn't bare the thought of just a technically good session drummer in TWS. It would kill the fabulously basic stripped down beauty.
fuck yeah! my favorite ringtone;D
