the real truth about restaurants (over 11 years experience) is that managers are scared to death of lawsuits and would not risk getting sued over an unpaid bill, and trying to fire a waitress for it. they comp the meal, and are pissed off yes, they very rarely blame the waitress or waiter.

I however would confront the manager about penalizing the waitress. I personally wouldn't make my employees pay for something like this unless it was an ongoing thing with the same employee. This shit happens...these employees make your place run everyday, treat them with a little respect.

I have many many times walked out of restaurants without paying for meals.

That's because I am absent-minded. When I realize my mistakes afterwards, I always return to restaurants and apologize for my forgetfulness to pay. In every place, I always insist on paying for meals beforehand, in case I forget to pay at the end. Fortunately, most restaurant owners in my hometown know me well enough and have a few times politely reminded me of my mistakes.

European here. I did once accidentally. Actually because I received a call and had to deal with a personal emergency and ended up walking out without paying.

I returned once things were clear after we got back from the hospital, apologised and paid for it. Since then, we've been regular customers on a first-name basis with the people who run it.
