Poor explanations, poor choices in getting your point across. A shovel won't save your life. the 3 basic's and knowing how to get them/make them will. those are Shelter, Fire, and water. In that order. Minimize the things you think you need, and supplement them with knowledge. Your mind will be your best ally. Having a few proper tools to serve multiple functions is a must!

Ive never been a fan of the swiss army knife, the screw driver always breaks the knife blade is too thin and the saw bends :S

I usually go with being stealthy and not attracting attention rather than self defense but one can never be too careful.

@DancingRabbit52 Personally I always go into the woods with big slabs of meat tied to my back, and a bucket of hot dogs tied around my neck....I like to make a lot of flailing about nosies too...sort of sounding like I'm a dying animal. For some reason I tend to need to defend myself quite a bit, from bears, and wild boars, and the occasional Wild Man, raised by wolves (there are more of em than you'd think ....they are very common in the Western woodland areas of the U.S. .
