I always wondered was there an extended version of 'Then Came You' with Phillippe freestyling longer. I always thought that he was just getting started and the song ends.
Now this was when the spinners were on top but they couln't replace phillipe when he passed away that was a sad day maybe one day they will find another as bad as him
at least this is the REAL Spinners, not the other dodgy ones posted on you tube who seem to be undergoing the Benjamin Button thing getting younger with age!
@DaPoncher Why U calling me a punk ?..I'm a old GROWN ASS MAN !!..I'm NOT a Kid !..Don't talk that tuff Shit behind your computer, Mind your business, I didn't say Shit about U !....I've spend my MONEY buying & supporting their albums (CD's) & live DVD Concerts So let me express the way I Feel about the Spinners my way, If U don't like what I said Don't answer my comment or U come correct....WHO is U ? the fuckin Police !.....GET A LIFE U SOUR PUSS !!
@originallhamfist NO NO NO you SO misunderstood me !!!...I guess u don't live in the States? in the United States the phase "THE SHIT" means GOOD, Great ,Impressive, Outstanding, Excite, Super, Spectacular, Awesome, Cool, Lovely, Beautiful, Amazing, Best and other terms with similar meanings...OK ?...SO I didn't SAY NOTHING BAD or NEGATIVE about The Spinners NOR Phillipe..I hope this clear my past comment & U have better understanding to it....
Glad to see there are two video files posted here by anmarinc of the November 1976 episode from the original version of the PBS live music show, Soundstage, titled "Goin' Round With The Spinners," produced by PBS member station WTTW Chicago. Does anyone happen to have this program in its entirety? I've been looking for a better quality video of it to have on DVD to replace the copy I have on another DVD, transferred from a poor to fair quality recording off of a VHS cassette I won on Ebay.
Now here's some food for thought...The Spinner's classic favorite "Sadie" was recorded in 1975, shortly after the death of Phillipe Wynne's mother. It was RUMORED that during the actual recording of the song, wynne wept while singing and can be heard if you listen carefully.
So he left the group in 1977 for a solo career. After a breif and unsuccessful solo career, he pastored a church called "The Church Of The Lost Black Sheep" Phillipe did TOUR with Parliament-Funkadelic, but never performed on stage WITH them. Sadly, Phillipe did suffer a fatal heart attack while performing on stage at the Oakland Coliseum in October of 1984.
Wynne did perform with P-Funk on stage and during a Detroit stop in '80 he actually sang Sadie. Hard to believe Wynne went from the Spinners to gospel, then did the vocals on Just Not Knee Deep!
Two great Spinners videos, thanks for the posting! I hadn't seen the Spinners vs. Bulls since it aired on Ch. 56 Detroit back in the 70s. I would love to see the entire show again, plus the full show from this posting. Thanks again.
I doubt it! Phillipe performed with the Spinners WELL into the early 80's. He actually was performing with them when he collapsed and died of a heart attack in 1984. This clip looks like it was from the 70's.
OK wait a min, I take that back. Phillipe actually left The Spinners in '77; so I don't know if he was performing with them or perhaps the Funkadelics/George Clinton when he collapsed on stage in '84. I'm unclear about that.
Phillipe left the Spinners on January 3, 1977, right before the LP "Yesterday, Today and Tomorrow" was released. He died on stage in a little club in California, during an encore of "Love Don't Love Nobody." Besides Stevie Wonder, Phillipe was my favorite male vocalist. I'll always miss him.
HEY Mshoney baby! Your ass is SO fine! (Lol) But let me put in MY five cents worth of knowledge about Phillipe Wynne. YES...He was indeed a beast vocally! I consider him to be to be one of the defining voices of soul music in the 70's. But OFF stage he was a beast of a different kind. He had an ego comparable to David Ruffin of the Temptations. He felt he was the star of the group and didn't receive enough credit.
What is the name of the track starting at 0:12 ?

Sheer joy! Lets not forget their great musical conductor, Maurice King who was a big behind the scenes part of Motown's successes in the 60s.

@OrgenaII Yea. John had a stroke. John was a wicked singer as well as Phillippe. Different styles but they both were full of soul.

Yeah, but he didn't have the charm or sex appeal as Teddy. He HAD THE TALENT just not the sex appeal.
