Come on people, Milk wasn't that great.
He was buddies with Jim Jones and supported the People's Temple (that was the Communist Cult that ordered its 900 members to commit suicide with poison kool-aid).
The movie won't show the truth about their relationship, but both were San Francisco liberals, buddies, and political allies. Milk even wrote letters to the president defending Jones, called his programs "amazing" and attended rallies in his support after his cult was in full swing in Guyana
