ETL, or "Effective Translational Lift", is an aerodynamic principle which usually happens at a forward speed of around 16-24 kts and increases lift by having the added "clean" air move over the rotor disk..It usually calls for an input of forward cyclic to compensate for the climbing tendency.
If you're aircraft is a tad heavy you want to use ETL to your advantage.
Was it too confined to be able to nose through ETL?

VRS stands for Vortex Ring State. Another name for it is Settling with Power.
