I guess everyone has a different way of doing things, but instead of layering snares you'll find with proper eq'ing you could get the same effect if better with a single solid snare hit. People like chase and status don't layer too much and they've got some pretty fat drums. Bring it up around 200hz and it'll cut thru the mix like a knife thru makeup on a whores face. :)

why do you use samples for beats, is it a timesaving thing? i use reason and make the drum sounds myself. chase n status use samples too. am i wasting my time as a producer using reason for beats?

@dthomson80 ...doubt it, you'll have unique, homemade sounds/samples that no one else does. On the other hand there might be something nice about the familiarity of a popular break or hit that helps listeners relate to your sound.

@dthomson80 Dude, nothing wrong with making your own beats - but if you use Reason presets you're always gonna get tinny sounding drums that wont cut it! See the guy's comment below, hit up some samples websites and start chopping, doesnt mean you don't have original beats, but you can't write a symphony with a xylophone!
