I had obtained internet tethering by the method you describe, but lost it when I upgraded my iphone 3G to software version 3.1. After wasting most of a Sunday, I was able to revert back to 3.0.1; I then was able to restore tethering! My advice is: IF YOU WANT TO KEEP TETHERING CAPABILITY, DO NOT ACCEPT ANY IPHONE SOFTWARE UPDATES NEWER THAN 3.0.1 (until AT& T finally decides to enable it; of course it won't be free anymore). FOR NOW , USE TETHERING SPARINGLY; OTHERWISE AT & T may cut you off!

I've used it a lot. I was very careful when I first found out how to do this because I was afraid that AT&T would hit me with a huge bill, but that hasn't happened for 3 months since I started tethering so I think its safe.

Unfortunately not, but there is a reason, both computers now-a-days and the iPod Touch can pick up Wi-Fi, Usually the computer picks up more than the ipod touch, if you have both in the same area they are both going to pick up the same Wi-Fi, so tethering would be pointless really, if the iPod Touch could pick up a mobile internet signal like the iPhone it would work, but it would also then classify the iPod Touch as a mobile device thus adding a carrier and a charge.
