Tracing your philosophy of science back to god was, at their time, as natural as it is, in our time, to cut god completely out of the equation when talking about science. @Omnicron777 Firstly, it's Descartes. Secondly, the philosophers you mention didn't really have a choice but to include God at their time. The church had too much power for a philosopher (who wanted recognition) to challenge it.

I'm not sure it's technically true that they didn't presuppose god though: didn't Heraclitus believe himself to be a god? If you paid attention to this video, or actually sought to understand philosophy, its impact in history and human thought would be quite clear. The ideas commonly articulated, debated, and defended in philosophy, have laid the foundations of our civilization. Weither its political philosophy (capitalism, socialism, communism, democracies, republics, etc), the birth of science ( begetted by empirical philosophy), or our basic understanding of the world around us.

Philosophy is often regarded as a subject in itself, dealing typically with unanswerable questions (with science and politics now of course being separate disciplines). I was ironically referring to the intellectual pursuit of the unknowable. It seems you are referring more to the historical, all encompassing definition of the word.
