  • Great work on this! Education is always best when mixed with humor - dry, satirical, unsmiling humor...... :| Oh, and another thing: you have a fantastically awesome beard & hair style!

  • yes dude i liked a lot the video, listen to the knife-silent shout album , thats the right way to screw with your head,

  • columbia contemporary civilizations in 5 minutes....

  • Why were you smoking in this video?

P1) you are smoker and if you smoke say 20 cigarettes and stay awake for 16 hours you smoke on average every 48 minutes for 40 it would be every 24 minutes.

P2) you have some discretionary ability over when you smoke a cigarette

P3) You made a youtube video that is 5 minutes long in which you smoked

    -------------

C1) You choose to smoke in your video

C2) You are vain and believe smoking to be a status symbol perceived positively

  • I want to tear out your spine. I want to de-spine you.

  • Is this guy braging about all his books or teaching?

  • Wow you guys are so ignorant. He's obviously a professor of philosophy, I recognize the glasses and beard, you get them with your kit. I mean degree.

  • this is just stupid. stupid and stupid.

  • You're a video blogger, not an academic. You're at least that self-aware, right?

  • Autocue!

  • Your history of philosophy is not so much a history of the love of wisdom. You deal exclusively with answers to "What is?" "Who are we?" and "How do we know?"

Some suggested addition: Sappho--presaged many problems of the Stoics and Epicureans by claiming that the purpose of life is the fulfillment of erotic love. Sade--presaged existentialism by being a crazy idiot. Arendt--claimed that ethics and politics are the same because we are responsible for our own lives-in-the-world.

  • ambitiously attempted. How about this line .. kantian "a priori" - Hegel's phenomenology , Wendt and James with Clinical Psychology. Freud, the Cartesian Theatre as a model, Existentialism , Foucault, Derrida ,Penfield FMRI and the work of Demasio, and finally the demise of philosophy because psychology has matured enough to synthesize the last 2500 years. See Peter Singer.

  • That was great! Thanks!

  • Conclusion: Philosophy is for nutjobs

  • @swevixeh1 Of course, everyone knows logic and reason are for nutjobs and demonstrably useless.

  • @VampirePraemium Reason can obviously exist without moronic questions such as "How can i be certain that this isn't just a dream?", "If i drop this pencil, How can i be certain that it will fall?" and the like.

  • 5:15 =/= <5:00

  • good stuff, especially the jab at Ayn Rand. I feel like you could've included another woman by making an Arendt/Heidegger joke.

  • very impressive.

    thank you for enlightning me.

  • May I have your books?

  • plz make videos at 360p or 480p thx

  • your trying hard to be funny.... your not

  • Why don't you have a Leibniz book? I have a whole book shelf of Leibniz books...they are far more important to the history of thought than most of the other names.

  • he's trying to appear cool and sexy

  • you are brilliant and hilarious at the same time.

  • "Cult leaders can be philosophers too." Great dramatic pause.

  • this narrative only works if the viewer already has a general background knowledge of western philosophy...

  • Good vid, funny, insightful, and overall entertaining, as far as substance, it is comedy, and it is oversimplified, but that's what makes it is funny. I hope many will be inspired to study Philosophy-

  • Good vid, funny, insightful, and overall entertaining! I hope many will be inspired to study Philosophy-

  • Brilliant!

  • "Camus and Sartre chose to talk of absurd things seriously but had a falling-out. Thus, neither wanted to invite the other to their birthday parties." funny shit man!!!!! :)

  • You have no knowledge about Machiavelli, don't you?

  • Comment removed

  • Cult leaders can be philosophers, too. You funny.

  • A prize for oversimplification, second only to Doctor Bruce's Australian philosophy on DrBruceAustralia's channel. But not as funny.

  • Heidegger who decided to stop being... LOLZ

  • I don't have the time to read Bertrand Russell so I'll take your words for it :D

  • "Popper said thinks most people agreed with and that's why nobody remembers him"

  • I don't have the books, but I do have the cigarettes and beard.

I'm 2/3 of the way there!

  • bro you are balling

  • Alpha - Omega

  • none of your books look like they have been read?!

  • @viktorvaldemar most of the stuff he´s saying is just wrong. Perhaps thats why the books dont look like they have been read.

  • "my hypocrisy is somehow profound" is the best quote ever

  • i like how he mentions ayn rand, and then take a few seconds to muster the strength to bash her.

  • Give me your library.

  • Really, you couldn't have just mentioned Arendt or Butler or De Beauvoir or all three, and instead you make your token woman philosopher Rand??

  • this was pretty hilarious

  • Greetings from the light of good,

Honour King Haile Selassie I and realize the global benefits/longevity his core connected political system is.

We want global wellness and longevity with the goal of knowledge with mature understanding and relation.

  • i feel like Emma Goldman can be included in there...but then again, she was an anarchist, and only asshole anarchists like myself give a rats ass

  • Love the "cult leader" bit LMFAO

  • Comment removed

  • Socrates was no asshole!

  • @malm1231

Yes he was. That was his shtick. That's why he was so damn cool.

  • “The History of Western Philosophy in Under 5 Minutes,” ending with a climactic noise, including 17 seconds of cigarette fondling. The word “philosophy” comes from the Greek word “philosophia” which means “love of wisdom.” I wonder what connections Sigmund Freud would have made between: love, “5 Minutes,” climax, and the cigarette.

  • You seemed to chuck Parmenides in with the same group as the Pre-Socratics who dealt with the elements. If I remember correctly, Parmenides didn't like the differences in the elements and thought they were all one.

  • If you are interested in philosophy, you may be interested in this honest and serious effort to seek and reveal truth. Search "Truth Contest" in Google and click the 1st result, then open The Present and read what it says. Invite everyone you can reach to participate in the contest.

  • Camus was from Algeria not France.

  • if a tree falls in the forest, and it lands on a philosopher.... does anyone care?

  • socrates was a cult leader too.

  • @Omnicron777 No one said you have to agree with them. Just keep in mind that we are all a product of our time. Tracing your philosophy of science back to god was, at their time, as natural as it is, in our time, to cut god completely out of the equation when talking about science. I personally think Popper did a great job acknowledging the rationalists while making his own system.

  • The speaker is going to die of lung cancer, emphysema, stroke, or heart attack because of his smoking addiction - And I'm supposed to ditch my "arrogance"? Which do you think will happen first, death by smoking, or death by arrogance?

  • @Mal1234567 who taught you to tell the future?

  • @Omnicron777 Firstly, it's Descartes. Secondly, the philosophers you mention didn't really have a choice but to include God at their time. The church had too much power for a philosopher (who wanted recognition) to challenge it.

It seems you have some kind of frustration towards theism though..

  • @Omnicron777 The Presocratics were mostly a bunch of misfit materialists waiting for Plato and Aristotle to set em straight. I'm not sure it's technically true that they didn't presuppose god though: didn't Heraclitus believe himself to be a god? (but other than him, surely they were all naturalists like ur boy democritus)

How can you complain the Presocratics got shortchanged when all Descartes gets is "then Descartes plotted things, and asserted himself" (which isn't false, by the way).

  • Plato comes along and writes all this down... so true haha

  • This is awesome tho....Philosophy is about life and what is life without a little of "introduction" without humor. Excellent job!

  • your beard is somewhat scary, but I am turned on by it.. is that wrong?

  • @allthingspinkable It's wrong if you're not turned on by it.

  • After Plotinus he gave up trying to explain them; I don't think it counts as history if it doesn't explain what they meant.

  • He needs to ditch that cigarette.

  • @Mal1234567 You need to ditch the arrogance.

  • I fucking lol'd at the statement on Popper

  • lol no book on Aquinas... For shame.

  • I have much reading to do.

  • Isn't it pronounced Sarrrr - te

  • het, you did it in less 5 minutes!! nice vid!!

  • Those cigarrette adds are becoming more and more complex.

    good clip

  • i love the tone in which you put this! very entertaining :D should be shown at the start of every begginer philosphy class ;)

  • You are reading....

  • 4:56,you finished whit it hisory of w.philosophy under 5 minutes

  • good show

  • and with the tumbling of the those books the belief that philosophy can really teach us anything tumbles along with it..

  • @funandinteresting

If you paid attention to this video, or actually sought to understand philosophy, its impact in history and human thought would be quite clear. The ideas commonly articulated, debated, and defended in philosophy, have laid the foundations of our civilization. Weither its political philosophy (capitalism, socialism, communism, democracies, republics, etc), the birth of science ( begetted by empirical philosophy), or our basic understanding of the world around us.

  • @ghostbuddy Firstly, I did pay attention to this video. Secondly, I do seek to understand philosophy having just completed my third year majoring in the subject.

Philosophy is often regarded as a subject in itself, dealing typically with unanswerable questions (with science and politics now of course being separate disciplines). I was ironically referring to the intellectual pursuit of the unknowable. It seems you are referring more to the historical, all encompassing definition of the word.

  • Your library gives me a nerd-boner.

  • SNUB FAGGOT

  • 437 dislikes? wtf? most youtubers can't appreciate azrienoch's brilliance. this is az's fault only if he's a populist. i doubt that, because if he was, he'd have probably been making videos like fred.

  • come on, give the guy a break, it was quite funny actually

"Popper said things that most people agreed with, and that's why nobody remembers him", "Ayn Rand -- cult leaders could be philosophers, too" LOL

  • Very funny satire and bizarrely accurate."Sophists were surprisingly accepting of this asshole","James and Dewey working hard in America",Camus and Sartre talked about absurd things seriously"-brilliant stuff.I'm sure that Russell would have enjoyed this.

  • Pretty apt description of Derrida in 5 seconds.

  • Where Sokrates pee, this funny guy grow up..

  • Like seriously!!!

  • Like really boring!!!

  • Your video is boring!!!

  • its funny but very very very silly

  • silly

  • LOOOOOOOOOSSSSSSSEEEEERRRR! Fucking headacyhe! point takin?

  • make sure you are smoking a cigarette.

  • who doesnt remember poppeR?

  • Ha ha...great work !

Philosopic history is like this. One man/woman gets an idea, the next breaks it down.

I think I maybe could explain philosophy in a few seconds: What the hell am I doing here ?? Think about it...think think thnink about it !!! ;)

  • 429 people expected to learn all of 2000 years of philosophy in 5 minutes.

    They where disappointed.

  • @DackIsBack They were unable to use English.

  • ~Snickers~ The Derrida bit was priceless.

  • I haven't laughed so hard while studying Philosophy, thanks dude!

"And since everybody agrees with what he sez, nobody remembers him"

  • Dont smoke inside.

  • You lie! (that was under 5 minutes) :D

  • Popper had that weird shit about about dualism with mind being able to effect matter if it was really, really small; I'm pretty sure most people think that's bollocks.

  • "naah its will to power. feel my muscles"

  • @hbk621 liberal arts degree holders, and some even no degree at all, in the U.S. can make ranging between 40k a year- 600 million to 80billion (that Billion with a B). Danielle Steele (80 mil a book every 6 months), the poet turned author, Oprah, Tom Anderson (580mil myspace) and pretty much any actor making 20 mil a movie, 1 mil and t.v episode, etc...a.k.a. non-lawyers. or, creatives, literary artists, entrepreneurs, for example. plus, they contribute to humanity in some way.

  • smoking is bad

  • @IWillRushYou But it looks cool.

  • I look upon Plato and Socrates as Normam Bates and his Mother. Alfred Hitchcock directs Psycho's Republic. In a cinema near you.

  • Liebniz looked on the bright side of life , and Voltaire made fun of him for it. PMSL

  • superman lol. What did Nietzsche say after catching syphilis off some hooker cause he couldn't get laid?

  • @pipebillys try getting laid in Neetz time, yeah.. you would see a hooker too.

  • @aramhampson Lord Byron. a little earlier than Nietzsche, but I bet he got all the pussy he wanted.

  • MARXIST PHILOSOPHY

    1. Consciousness comes from material existence.(materialism, i.e. no god)

    2. Class is a relationship to the means of production.

    3. Classes are always in conflict.

    4. Change is due to the conflict between opposing forces(dialectics)

  • "Cult leaders can be philosophers too..."

I laughed so hard. That was great.

  • @arbitterm Ya me too, cause it was way of target.

  • Hahahaha I have that last book. The entire Cambridge Dictionary of Philosophy.

  • "Plato comes along and writes this down."

    How eloquently put! lol

  • @DamienZshadow Socrates' opinions generally vary in relation to Plato's age. I bet he's down in limbo sitting on his ugly ass, musing "I'VE BEEN MISUNDERSTOOD, YO"

  • Sartre is pronounced -Sart-

  • Great Video though, I don't want to troll...I just noticed.

  • @Foxxxprotector it's pronounced: Sartr'

  • there were no atheists? yeah, there were no atheists that wrote anything down that hadn't been destroyed.

  • 421 people couldn't manage the big words, long sentences and over five minutes of continuous thought. Back to reality TV for them.

  • "...cult leaders can be philosophers too." Lolz. CLASSIC!

  • If you were my philosophy teacher... I'd make damn sure we'd be properly stoned before asking a question.

  • Great video.

  • LOL. Ayn Rand.

  • where's carnap and quine?

  • I am sure this is much more funny than I know it to be.

  • @Elaina43 Yah I just watched it a second time like two weeks after I watched it the first and it is definitely a LOT funnier. Huh.

  • Never take philosophy in college.

  • @TheCaliCapitalist You make an excellent point. If you take philosophy you'll end up trying to impress the professor instead of truly understanding philosophy. I took an ethics course and my professor only wanted students to regurgitate what he discussed instead of what we learned as individual students. I'll never do that again!

  • Lmfao I love it

  • TY good sir and I sall get the book! :)

  • No he didn't he was about a half a second to late. Now that's bad ass pretentiousness if that was intentional.

  • ...but you do finished the history description in under 5 minutes.

  • Who is playdoh?

  • @ThomGreen666 plato.

  • @ThomGreen666 PLATO ehehe

  • dummass

  • @ThomGreen666 retard

  • @ThomGreen666 A shitty slur of Plato.

  • ROFL

  • This video is entitled, "The History of Western Philosophy in Under Five Minutes." What do you think that means? That this guy is going to give a serious detailed view of every philosophy out there? NO. It's suppossed to be a brief and witty summary. Get over it.

  • I'd rather you'd do it in 7 minutes and actually tell us something more than "nuh-uh" and "yuh-huh" though...

  • I probably disagree with almost everything you think, but I liked your video

  • Metallic everyone is like that...not just the western world.

  • Metallic everyone is like that...not just the western world.

  • I CAN SUM UP WESTERN PHILOSOPHY IN LESS THAN 500 CHARACTERS,HERE GOES,STEP ONE ALL WHO OPPOSE OUR DONT AGREE WITH YOUR OPINION,BE VERY CORRUPT,STAB PEOPLE IN THE BACK,LIE,CHEAT,STEAL,RAPE,MURDER,MOLEST,BE OVERBEARING IN YOUR OPINION,STAY DIVIDED AS A PEOPLE,DID I SAY GREED OR SELFISHNESS,CONSUME,TRASH YOUR ENVIRNMENT,HATE ON EVERYONE ELSE FOR THERE RACE,WEGHT,GENDER,HEIGHT,EYE COLOR,SPEECH IMPEDOMENT,OR THERE BELIEF,WELL I THINK THAYS ABOUT IT FOR WESTERN PHILOSOPHY,(NEXT QUESTION)

  • Damn, really good vid. Just about every major western philosopher in there. And way to shut down Popper. What a douche. Good work

  • I adore your videos. Your funny, witty and adorable (and a great reader...)

Keep up the good work bitch!
