Whats interesting to note is that this vessel had already been plying these waters for 50 years prior to the bridge being built. Also I must say I have nothing but the utmost respect for men like your Grandfather who risked their lives building what I consider the most beautiful bridge in the world. My thanks to him.
If you type in the YouTube search (Mackinac Bridge) there is a video of the Mackinac Bridge walk of 09-06-1971. In that Video in 1971 the St. Marys Challenger is being filmed going under the Bridge.
This is a very good video of ships passing through the Mackinac Bridge. there needs to be more video like these of SHips passing through the straights of mackinac
the reason it was this calm was because I am friends with Gandalf the Grey and also Jesus and they gave me a magic spell to calm the straits. in return I had to do 40 push ups.
I really enjoyed this video. I saw this ship in Port Huron on August 20th. Was surprised by the age. I took photos of the aft end because i hadn't seen any like that in ages.
Of note, the St. Marys Challenger is one of only two remaining vessels still active on the Great Lakes to be powered by the classic Skinner Marine Unaflow steam engine. The other vessel is the car ferry Badger (2) which is powered by two of these engines and, in turn, remains as the only coal fueled vessel still in active service on the Great Lakes.
