In the beginning of the video, sounds like the RM is putting on the throttle rather than wide open through those trails. If I still had my Rm-250, I'd go up against that CRF-450. It's not always the bike, sometimes it's the rider.
@10chadjordan01 Exactly right! My buddy Jon is a much better rider than me, and this is my second time off the pavement so still have a lot of instincts to suppress when the bike slides around. I rode his 450 later that day and it definitely has a better top end. I'm confident that as my skill increases and we get to the tighter trails, I will be able to stick closer each time we go riding. Hopefully more people will look at my habits and give tips so I get better that much faster :)
@jkomarmy I guess in this particular video though, that Rm does look like it could use some TLC. What year is it and how long had it been since the top end had been re-built? I'd say after changing the jets, breaking in a brand new top end, and consistent cleaning of the carburetor, That Suzuki would be more than ready.
@10chadjordan01 That's an 89, I gave it a fresh hone and a new piston after the meltdown, it was already sleeved so got it back running a few days later. Since it hasn't blown again, I'm positive it was no oil in the gas. My instinct was to drain it and use my own pre-mix, but I didn't and paid the price. The carb was spotless, I just had to replace a faulty o-ring on the plastic seat that was allowing it to flood. The plug looks a hair on the rich side so I'll probably leave the jets alone.
@jkomarmy Woah! Yeah man, that's not really a fair race for that RM. Love that bike to death man if you want to keep it running. Sounds like you're already on top of it though. Have fun riding! I wish I still had my bike.
Even with a good mix in it 50:1 with TTS or Yamalube it will still end up like that if you ride it like that. Its a MX bike, its meant to be in the band for a bit, then back to lower RPM, then back into the band, as soon as you hold it flat out like that for ages it will overhead and fuck up. Whenever im riding long distances with my RM, i ll have it in 5th and low speed every nown again and bog out the motor to flood it with oil.
@KXRider212 I went down 4 teeth in the rear and broke it in today. I also went for a light ride, no hard pulls and not topping it out for minutes like in the video. I'm 32:1 with amsoil and it's already scuffed up a bit on the exhaust side when I pulled the pipe to take a peek. At least now the plug looks good, but I'm worried its having oil issues on that side from heat. It melted down on the exhaust side only from the run in the video as well. Let me know if you have any more suggestions.
@tallred847 True, when I pay for stuff I do prefer Honda. I traded my Yamaha Blaster for it so I'm pretty happy anyway. I'll have it running again tomorrow night with proper mix gas and longer gearing to see how it likes it. I also found the power valve wasn't connected to the actuator rod when I pulled the cylinder off. That 450 will still beat me though, such a nice bike!
