The wanker who decided it would be a good idea to chop and hack this beautiful circuit up should be found, hung drawn and quartered then sliced and diced and feed to the pigs.
Looking at this footage, which I am thankful for, 40 years after I attended this event, I see that Rindt and his Lotus had the measure of Ickx and Ferrari. They were tied together, yes, but Rindt was always going to lead at the time of his choosing. From the concrete infield stands (where I had slept the night before) it seemed a tossup and was as exciting a duel as I have ever seen.
I find the Ferrari flat 12 in this, its original form, to be the most beautiful racing car ever.
no corner, he died on the first straight in the forest, he crashed in the trees. At that time there were no chicanes, they built them after the dead of clark.
mmh ok, but the chicanes weren´t there at that time, i´m sure ^^. They built the first chicane in the near of clarks accident and than they called it clark chicane.
I attended this race in 1970, my first Formula One Grand Prix.
Yes, a truly memorable experience. I sat near the start-finish in the large covered grandstand. I remember the strange feeling after the start, with all the preliminarys, marching bands, etc etc, and then within a few seconds the entire field dissappears outside the stadium area, not to return for several minutes, and 100,000+ spectators are left in silence with nothing to watch.
absolutely the best grand prix held in germany! the battle between these two superstars rindt and ickx, lotus and ferrari
in a time of real tracks, cars extremely difficult to drive, and last but not least the most beautifull car in formula 1 history with the lotus - ford 72 in the colors of gold leaf. this is real formula 1 racing. and as you post, speeder76, unforgetable!
This is truly astounding footage, thanks for this. The Ostkurve really was something on those days and those guys standing at the first corner in the stadium (07:55) must have been mad but it just goes to show how different things were back then.
Most amazing F1 video published so far!! Thanks a ton! Rindt and Ickx, the first year of the greatest, although most tragic era of F1. The Lotus 72 in Gold Leaf livery is the coolest F1 racer ever. Just wish I could find a similar video of the Italian GP 1971 (won by Peter Gethin in a BRM)
this was the real hockenheim, not the travesty of a track that we see today.
