Ubuntu is like a baby girl dancing and jumping in her pink frock around windows I m not biased I have just expressed my needs MY institute ICAP tests me in office 2010 and I have not seen it in ubuntu
@uploader251 For gaming, Linux does kind of suck. I mean, there is Wine and the PlayOnLinux frontend, but that can only get you so far. As far as Ubuntu being a "baby girl dancing and jumping in her pink frock around windows," I have this much to say: Ubuntu made Linux well known. It isn't an ineffectual name, or an ineffectual idea. While I doubt Linux, or the Ubuntu distro will ever take over Windows, it does provide one very important thing: the ability to choose what you want.
I have tried ubuntu 10.10 on my pc It had no problem finding dirvers for my sound card and gpu and one thing I must agree is that Ubuntu can win if it is only eyecandy I could move a running window like if it was A towell or a cloth a similar thing as Physx floating effects but the only thing linux will take some time to be known as "stable office OS" by that comment of girl in frock
I meant to say U have to change it like mood of that little girl
And I respect those who use challenging things , I tried to keep it in multiboot but could not get past boot screen though 8.04 worked fine with windows 7
but I was too busy to follow any thing to that ISsue in 10.10
@aStupidTroll My specs are identical, and I multiboot Ubuntu and Windows 7.
Shut up and ask for clarification next time before you accuse someone of being stupid, because making accusations without evidence is one of the dumbest things you can do.
@SkullXII My questions are what version of Ubuntu are you running, what programs do you have installed on Ubuntu, how much swap you gave it, and the same for Windows 7, minus the swap.
my toshiba is 3 years old and is super fast becoz i no how to take care of computers, kubuntu takes 8 seconds to load and (window pre-realese it still works!) windows 7 takes 15 seconds to load by load i mean log in aswell
@Mryouareretarded Bullshit alarm! Unix came before Windows, GNU/Linux was based upon Unix. Without Unix there would be no Ubuntu, so you sir are wrong if you think without microsoft there would be no Ubuntu.
why does everybody like ubuntu!? It sucks! It is the linux equivelant to vista; it is bulky, slow as shit and build for noobs. If you really want to test a linux distro use a real distro like slackware or gentoo.
Because some of us want the security of a unix based system without the price of a mac that "just works" without having to learn how to use a fucking terminal.
Microsoft Windows Vista was available for retail on 2007-1-30, with the RTM being released 2006-10-8.
Ubuntu 8.10 (Intrepid Ibex - R: 2008-10-30) is not from the same general release date as Vista.

We also have no proof that you haven't updated one, and left the other outdated.
@imp0cat ah, but it is. Not to mention drivers as well. The operating systems aren't as near as possible in terms of release date, not to mention possible configuration settings with programs that could be interfering with boot time.
@imp0cat mate ive got this laptop with 1.4ghz and 2gb of ram, and currently is on vista but thinking of clean instaling it to win 7 would i have any problems with win 7 or will it be better many thanks!
@Burgattti I haven't actually bothered to upgrade to Windows 7 yet, so I can't really tell. I think Windows 7 should be faster than Vista, (assuming you can find all the drivers).
@Burgattti I'd rather say install a version of Linux. Most preferably openSUSE, Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Mandriva, Debian, Ubuntu but there are many others as well, each with their own features, Linux is completely easy to install and for free. All you need is a rewritable disk or a floppy disk or a USB. Great in speed and reliability. Even though you can't use windows programs directly on Linux, there are some linux programs that allow use of Windows programs too! :D
@imp0cat sadly obsolete vista is buisness technicaly not gameing pc also it states that the vista is for work and not for gaming so its no duh that vista would work slower on boot up and windows 7 is worse then vista either way it doesent mattter if you want to test anything try the gameing vista and use a dimension you will never want to switch computers again
I'm a little disappointed that you stopped at login screens. I find that logging into Windows and having the computer get up to speed takes significantly longer than Ubuntu. this is why most game systems use the all powerful linux operating system: fast booting, light-weight (uses very little ram) very efficient with graphics/ram/cpu, its reliable/doesnt crash unless theres a serious flaw with a program, works faster then windows or apple... the only bad things i have noticed about it are that its not what i would really call user-friendly, and when it crashes, which is rare, it usually crashes to the point that you have to manually shut it down... overall it roks

a liar, I didn't lie about anything dipshit, everything I said is true...ur just a sad little 12 year old boy whos defendin Windows cuz u can't handle Linux :)
No Linux can't handle me, i open up firefox crash, try to install something ??? puzzled, Ubuntu should came with a damn user manual bitch, and No I am simply saying that windows is better, So go and cry to you damn mom you little bitch
Yes. My computer booted about 25 seconds faster after an the upgrade to 9.04 from 8.10. I installed ext4 on my laptop and it feels alot faster, even if I didn't make a comparison there. But from GRUB to login screen it takes 27 seconds.
try an ssd too =p from grub to desktop in 24 secs.... 2ghz duo core laptop with 2gb ram 30gb ssd and 320gb hdd. used to be like 40 seconds, although I do have auto-login but thats cos I have set a hard drive password in the BIOS
Ubuntu is faster as vista is not booted at that point it almost there like its windows b4 it once you go past the log in screen you still have to w8 for every thing else to load in on ubuntu u put ur screen name in its done ready to use no mouse with hour glass rotating
it is like that. ;) it looks like vista is the winner but the real is ubuntu.because if the test took longer nad he put his password and name in ubuntu and vista and at the same time pressed enter ubuntu will be ready
thats cheap, ubuntu is using the grub menu/ boot loader thats why it lost. if you dissable that, you boot 4 seconds shorter... have it boot directly to ubuntu instead of through the boot loader
The Ubuntu machine was faster, but the difference is negligible. You can see the Ubuntu login prompt appear merely a fraction of second before the Vista login prompt.
The Grub timer is only a few seconds long (at 0:16-0:19 in the video).
I like the video but like Runner50783 said, I used to have XP and it got from power button to login screen faster than my Ubuntu install does. The difference is that I get into a usable desktop on Ubuntu in 30 seconds where it took me approximately 7 minutes on XP.
I have been thinking about this. In Vista the desktop shows up just a few seconds after the password is entered, but the system still loads additional programs for a good minute or so and isn't very responsive. You can see the empty tray getting populated with icons of said programs. In Ubuntu, it takes a a bit longer before the desktop appears, but as you said, it is immediately usable. I guess I will have to redo the video eventually (with concurrent booting enabled in Ubuntu :)).
In addition, applications will perform differently for different Operating systems. Therefore, you cant get any "perfect" winner [same system specs but different drivers and such]
Linux is not unfriendly, it just chooses his friends carefully.

How to grow up?
hugestomper 2 years ago 3
this is why most game systems use the all powerful linux operating system: fast booting, light-weight (uses very little ram) very efficient with graphics/ram/cpu, its reliable/doesnt crash unless theres a serious flaw with a program, works faster then windows or apple... the only bad things i have noticed about it are that its not what i would really call user-friendly, and when it crashes, which is rare, it usually crashes to the point that you have to manually shut it down... overall it roks
i0rok0rs 2 years ago
Try with the new Ubuntu, 9.04.. it's way faster! It will beat Vista for sure!
nelfer19 2 years ago 4

9.04 are a bit faster at booting
fuckinashol 2 years ago 5
Yes. My computer booted about 25 seconds faster after an the upgrade to 9.04 from 8.10. I installed ext4 on my laptop and it feels alot faster, even if I didn't make a comparison there. But from GRUB to login screen it takes 27 seconds.
theJojan 2 years ago
really?
i need about 1 min on 8.1 and 45 secs on 9.04 but im using ext3 on a 2.5 dual core lap.
i think i ll have a try on ext4
fuckinashol 2 years ago
try an ssd too =p from grub to desktop in 24 secs.... 2ghz duo core laptop with 2gb ram 30gb ssd and 320gb hdd. used to be like 40 seconds, although I do have auto-login but thats cos I have set a hard drive password in the BIOS

Linux doesn't compete with any other OS but it gives a user a unique perspective about opensource and world controlled by corporations.
Linux makes you free.
If you agree then copy and paste this comment on any video where is a discussion about the best OS.

many ppl think "the cursor appears first" but when ubuntu logs in, its ready to any task beside the larger an almost infinite programs loader ....
lonelyvampire21 2 years ago
Ubuntu is faster as vista is not booted at that point it almost there like its windows b4 it once you go past the log in screen you still have to w8 for every thing else to load in on ubuntu u put ur screen name in its done ready to use no mouse with hour glass rotating
dogsmods 2 years ago
it is like that. ;) it looks like vista is the winner but the real is ubuntu.because if the test took longer nad he put his password and name in ubuntu and vista and at the same time pressed enter ubuntu will be ready
smarty8975 2 years ago 2
try booting ubuntu with the new format ... ext4
=P
ubuntu wins!
lonelyvampire21 2 years ago
Never mind Ext4 justtry the new Ubuntu, it'll win. You could run it on Ext2 and it would still win. It could probably win running from FAT.
calrogman 2 years ago
who cares about a few seconds i say they tied
ne0ngeek 2 years ago
They aren't tied. In Windows you'll have to wait after you've logged in. In Ubuntu, you can use the computer straight after loggin.
And btw, Ubuntu 9.04 has faster boot then Ubuntu 8.10 (which is used here)
Jarige2 2 years ago 4
thats cheap, ubuntu is using the grub menu/ boot loader thats why it lost. if you dissable that, you boot 4 seconds shorter... have it boot directly to ubuntu instead of through the boot loader
fantomfeltpen 2 years ago
YAY Windows won! You can tell coz the Vista cursor came up before Ubuntu!
saint1997 2 years ago
That's For The Cursor. Linux Login Showed First And With Windows You Have To Wait For Everything To Load Before Doing Anything
djtheextremegamerpro 2 years ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
Windows finished first, the startup sound came before, and so did the screen. You saw the logo, and THEN came Ubuntu.
saint1997 2 years ago
yay for ubuntu, the newest ubuntu is supposed to have faster boot times. =]
PowerMacUser 2 years ago
I think ubuntu won because of that 8 second timer it always has to ender grub menu. the actual loading time is much shorter
Tinfoilpain 2 years ago
who won
newsboysrock11 2 years ago
The Ubuntu machine was faster, but the difference is negligible. You can see the Ubuntu login prompt appear merely a fraction of second before the Vista login prompt.
The Grub timer is only a few seconds long (at 0:16-0:19 in the video).
imp0cat 2 years ago
still... you can set it to zero seconds and that would save you 3 seconds :) making UBUNTU BETTER!!!!
fantomfeltpen 2 years ago
close one
thorzo90 2 years ago
That was pretty close! You should have logged them both on, though. That's where the differences would probably start.
themaritimeman 3 years ago 3
I like the video but like Runner50783 said, I used to have XP and it got from power button to login screen faster than my Ubuntu install does. The difference is that I get into a usable desktop on Ubuntu in 30 seconds where it took me approximately 7 minutes on XP.
meoblast001 3 years ago
I have been thinking about this. In Vista the desktop shows up just a few seconds after the password is entered, but the system still loads additional programs for a good minute or so and isn't very responsive. You can see the empty tray getting populated with icons of said programs. In Ubuntu, it takes a a bit longer before the desktop appears, but as you said, it is immediately usable. I guess I will have to redo the video eventually (with concurrent booting enabled in Ubuntu :)).
imp0cat 3 years ago
In addition, applications will perform differently for different Operating systems. Therefore, you cant get any "perfect" winner [same system specs but different drivers and such]
This was a cool vid o_O 5stars
warty4ev3r 3 years ago
Good comparison, how ever, you should have included the desktop start-up times, that's where you really see a difference.
