He started out on violin first, bass strings go EADG, violin strings go GDAE. Natrually he cradles the bass in that sort of position and it's kinda like violin again
I came across your channel by accident, but I'm glad I did! I'm going to subscribe right away! So glad to see that you are still killing that bass! Please check out my EEMusicLive channel. I'm teaching guitar, bass, drums and keys (thats all I do now) and have posted some performances with my students. Stay cool, keep groovin' and get in touch! Eric Blackmon~ EEMusicLive!
I wish I could play like that holding my bass the conventional way. If I sold my soul to the devil to play like Quinton, he'd say 'Well, I might be able to get you close'.
hey man your sound is DOPE!! Also, I'm proud of you for staying true to yourself. like you said its not a gimic and this is real. I'm a left handed drummer and sometimes i'll set up and people say my set-up is all wrong. then i'll say its wrong for YOU not to me. Anyway nice video and nice story, i'm sure i'll see you on t v soon.
Quintin Berry... my new bass hero. Even if I never saw your one-of-a-kind method of playing the bass, and I just heard you play, I'd still be blown away. You're outstanding!!! Great work! I'll look for you on the Grammy Awards!
Just a theory, but your hands are most comfortable in that position, it's almost natural, so the load on your wrist is taken away on the plucking side. It actually makes sense. That and the fact that no one else is doing it.
I thought I read somewhere that he played violin when he was younger and when he transitioned to bass playing like this was more comfortable. But hey, don't trust everything you read on the internet.
What up Q, just showin my friend big worm your extraodinary talent. Much love from the Full Service Camp. We're actually opening for 311 later on today. Keep up the funk. Sick drum beat as well
I hate stupid shit!! What's the point holding the bass like that? Geez!!

I tried to play my bass like this just for fun but my mother punched me in the stomach & told me to get out of the house & never come back.

Haa! That's fresh & why not? It's a pretty natural position for the hand to be in. Kind of like scratching your chest but getting music out of it.

Who cares how he holds the bass!
smeer001 1 year ago
He plays like that because he played violin as a kid and this is what feels good to him... He can play both ways...

can anyone tell me why he plays like that?
phillip357 2 years ago
I guess when he started playing the bass he only had a lefty bass..
WitteBandera 2 years ago
That was my assumption.
Zelious12 2 years ago
In this video he's using a right-handed bass though.

Just think of it like playing an upright bass upside down.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
Maybe it's quite an original playing style, but the articulation and the attack is poor...

dont offend ppl just cuz they express their opinion, man...i really like quintin, but actually, he's kinda right...
Ravenhunt 2 years ago
xmikaelx you are not qualified to talk about this Quintin guy. He would make you look as ignorant as you already are.
diamonddust22 2 years ago
His articulation and attack are Good, you clearly just don't like the way he holds his bass.
They said the same thing about Jamersons technique with the "Hook".
Point being do what works for you and let others play how they want.
