I have a Sterling ST31 and it is absolutly NOT a side addresss microphone. Try taking your wind screen off and looking at the capsule. It picks up from the front of the mic. You can hear a significant gain increase in front of the mic, not on the sides. Your going to notice a much better recording if you point it at your guitar. My preferance is about 2 inches away from the sound hole up the neck. proximity effect will give you more warmth the closer you get.
@JBLisbest In this set up here I am only using the Interface itself... I am purchasing a few pre-amps in the fall that have proper A/D converters to them (UA 4-710 and a Focusrite ISA 428 mk2 with the a/d)... I will also be upgrading my Interface and getting proper room treatment lol
@CowcarMusic I thought the sound quality of the recording was very good. I couldn't here hardly any room noise, and it seems in all your videos, your universal preamp really allows you to use them to there full potential. Your universal audio preamp is single channel, correct?
@JBLisbest Thanks! Single Channel, yes. I got a great deal on both of them at christmas time which pretty much I got 2 for the price of one! I can't wait to get the 4 channel version! lol
when you record a guitar, you should place the microphone 1 foot from the guitar, this will reduce room noise by allowing you to turn down your pre amp and thus picking up less of what you dont want. micing directly over the sound hole causes it to sound muddy, but if thats what your after, its all personal preference. Im a certified audio engeneer, so you can trust my advice
@JBLisbest Appreciated... These overviews are set up to be very basic... you'll notice that there is no treatment in this room... my goal is to have these set up for the musician who doesn't have everything. as an example someone who purchases a mic and feels that the samples they heard on the manufacturer's website sound 100x better than what they hear when they record it because they don't have really expensive set ups. I myself may have a lot of gear but I don't have everything lol
The mic placed at the soundhole with the twin-finity sounds the fullest and I love the harmonic sparckle the pre adds. As you place the mic up the neck, the tone gets thinner and tinny. I say keep it at the 12-15; just my 2 cents
