The distance is measured in lunar distances, so is inevitable to be at X times that distance. There are certain distances at witch you can orbit a round object thus once again it is inevitable to fall on a pattern. This is why math is useful... :)
Often meaningful coincidences occur where life is present because that's where life is present. If 1/10,000 planets have the conditions to sustain life, of course the conditions on that planet are amazing and unlike those on the planets that can't sustain life. On the flipside, you could probably find other meaningful coincidences not involving sustaining life on each and every one of the other 10,000 planets.
They both have a visual angle of half a degree (0.5°), averagely of course, because the distance Moon-Earth and Earth-Sun varies a little. The point is, the ancient peoples regarded the moon as of the same importance as the sun because of this coincidence and total eclipses are possible.

The moon moves away from the earth at (approx) five cm a year, so if it has been doing this for all of its exsistence that means it was actually touching the earth 4.5 million years ago. Which goes someway to exlplaining why the dinosaurs had to deal with different gravity and why they were so big :)

I am a big fan and I will say that he was absolutely brilliant, and he probably knew what he was talking about, but he wrote futuristic science fiction novels and stories. They look similar in size because they roughly have similar distance-to-size ratios. The moon does not shine on the Earth opposite the sun because it is only reflecting the Sun's light, and it does so even in the day time. Even in a lunar solar eclipse, sun light still hits the Earth. In fact looking at the Earth from space a shadow of the moon can be seen.

I have held for decades that the moon was ejected from volcanic upheaval. the velocity determined the orbital radius. it explains why it rotates at the same angular velocity as the earth rotation, and why one side always faces the earth. This is a far more likely explanation than the earth colliding with another planet - the moon being the residue. And, the probability of both resulting alomst circular and the earth's rotation about the sun ending up almost circular is nil.

I have always been curious about the moon and its planet to moon ratio compared to all the other planets and there moons. It is way too big to be a natural satelite. If Jupiter had a moon according to the size of its mass, It would be 5 times larger then the earth.

These 'conincidences' can be explained by one thing... Gravity. The Earth 'holds' the one side of the moon near it with gravity. The moon is made of rocks with similiar density to the earth, so it's not surprising that the earth's gravity would hold it at a distance proportional to the distance to the sun so that the sizes appear to be the same. If the moon was the same density and got bigger, the extra mass would make it farther away, and would still be roughly the same size in the sky.

Normally the smaller body becomes locked to the bigger as we and the moon are, but Pluto and its moon Charon are both tidally locked to each other because they are of similar size. So its not an UNCOMMON feature. All rotating body's will at some point become tidally locked to each other through gravity. Its just a question of time.

Moon: 385k km +/- 20k km is 10% variation of its size depending on where its located in its axis.
Sun: 150m km +/-3m km is a 2% variation.
Given those two numbers, you can have a factor varying between 362 and 420 compared to that 395 for the diameters. thats a difference of +/- 7%. Which means the ratio your talking about occurs only for a small fraction of the time its in orbit.

Here's what I wonder... if some moons and or planets were formed as a result of lumps of matter being 'knocked off' other planets (i.e. the moon was once part of the earth, or part of mars or a result of some big bang etc), and there is nothing in space to cause erosion like wind or water does, how come all these 'lumps' of rock or whatever all ended up being round?

When you have a spinning clump of matter which induces gravity from its own mass, you end up with sphere like shapes due to gravity. If it was not massive enough, its gravity could not force the shape and you end up with awesome asteroids from the asteroid belt, which never coagulated into a planet, due to Jupiters gravity disturbance

Also, the moon is not in a perfect elliptical orbit with the earth. It is actually moving too fast and moving away from our planet at a pace of about 3cm a year. Also, we always see the same face of the moon because the moon was actually created from our planet billions of years ago when a large stellar object impacted our planet.
Let me try and explain this to you. The moon being 395 times closer to the earth then the sun whilst the moon is 395 times smaller then the sun is a coincidence. You argument about the sun shining during the day, and the moon always being in the sky during the night is not true. There are many instances where you can see the moon during the day, and no moon at night.
Read The Final Theroy by Mark McCutcheon - it will explain to you why we only see one side of the moon. The probability of the orbit being "exactly" that of it's rotation is quadrillions to one. There is no such crap as tidal locking peterloohunt. Orbits don't actually exist. They are a geometric phenomenon created by the theory that is explained in the book. So the moon doesn't rotate at all. I can't wait until the world excepts the theories in the book but probably not in our lifetime.

@fatgirlfister Actually, the moon DOES rotate on its axis. It rotates once for every orbit it makes around the Earth. That's exactly the reason why we only see one side of it. Find an old tennis ball or something and try it out for yourself - you have to spin it while "orbiting" it around an object so that the same face is always pointing towards that object.

I believe that there is a certain equation that needs to be followed to form life in the universe. Like the formation of some elements that need precisely the right conditions to come into existence so the same goes with life. They both have a visual angle of half a degree (0.5°), averagely of course, because the distance Moon-Earth and Earth-Sun varies a little. The point is, the ancient peoples regarded the moon as of the same importance as the sun because of this coincidence and total eclipses are possible.

maybe the ratios are slightly off BUT i have always had the idea that the moon is artificial there are just too many strange things with it, like its perfect position to us for our tides etc... the fact that it has been dated to be older than the earth the fact its the only moon we know of that does not spin on its axis like everything else so we only see one side of it, i could be wrong but i believe its an observation satelite for aliens to watch us as we grow and learn etc....

Actually the the first is 394.74 and the second is 405.88 (according to my calculator and using the numbers this video provided). They look similar in size because they roughly have similar distance-to-size ratios. The moon does not shine on the Earth opposite the sun because it is only reflecting the Sun's light, and it does so even in the day time. Even in a lunar solar eclipse, sun light still hits the Earth. In fact looking at the Earth from space a shadow of the moon can be seen.

You're actually wrong about the ratios. Punch these into a good calculator and you'll find that the distance ratio is 394.7368421 to 1, while the diameter ratio is actually 405.8823529. You're bending it a bit far to make a point, since that's a difference of roughly 2%. When it comes to astronomy, that could spell the difference between a successful mission and the challenger.

I have held for decades that the moon was ejected from volcanic upheaval. the velocity determined the orbital radius. it explains why it rotates at the same angular velocity as the earth rotation, and why one side always faces the earth. This is a far more likely explanation than the earth colliding with another planet - the moon being the residue. And, the probability of both resulting alomst circular and the earth's rotation about the sun ending up almost circular is nil.

These 'conincidences' can be explained by one thing... Gravity. The Earth 'holds' the one side of the moon near it with gravity. The moon is made of rocks with similiar density to the earth, so it's not surprising that the earth's gravity would hold it at a distance proportional to the distance to the sun so that the sizes appear to be the same. If the moon was the same density and got bigger, the extra mass would make it farther away, and would still be roughly the same size in the sky.

Normally the smaller body becomes locked to the bigger as we and the moon are, but Pluto and its moon Charon are both tidally locked to each other because they are of similar size. So its not an UNCOMMON feature. All rotating body's will at some point become tidally locked to each other through gravity. Its just a question of time.

The reason why we see one side of the moon is tidal forces. Pluto and its moon Charon are tidaly lock. The Earths rotation is slowing down due to the gravitational interaction with the moon.
The moon varies its distance from earth. Perigee 363,104 km
Apogee 405,696 km. At Perigee, the moon would cause a longer total ecplise, being larger than the sun. At Apogee, the moon would be smaller than the sun causing an annular eclipse. You can see an eclipse everytime Io orbits Jupiter.

Moon: 385k km +/- 20k km is 10% variation of its size depending on where its located in its axis.
Sun: 150m km +/-3m km is a 2% variation.
Given those two numbers, you can have a factor varying between 362 and 420 compared to that 395 for the diameters. thats a difference of +/- 7%. Which means the ratio your talking about occurs only for a small fraction of the time its in orbit.

Here's what I wonder... if some moons and or planets were formed as a result of lumps of matter being 'knocked off' other planets (i.e. the moon was once part of the earth, or part of mars or a result of some big bang etc), and there is nothing in space to cause erosion like wind or water does, how come all these 'lumps' of rock or whatever all ended up being round?

@rachmarinof seriously you cant understand how balls of molten lava that are spinning and eventually cool down end up with a sperical shape (often elleptical).
When you have a spinning clump of matter which induces gravity from its own mass, you end up with sphere like shapes due to gravity. If it was not massive enough, its gravity could not force the shape and you end up with awesome asteroids from the asteroid belt, which never coagulated into a planet, due to Jupiters gravity disturbance

@Flem1337 Seriously, one of the things I love most about life is the opportunity to learn new things every day. Like a lot of people, I wasn't born with understanding about many of life's wonders, but I educate myself in many ways, including friendly banter on youtube regarding subjects I know little about. Seriously, I didn't know how rounded planets were formed, which is why I asked, but I do now so thank you :)

Also, the moon is not in a perfect elliptical orbit with the earth. It is actually moving too fast and moving away from our planet at a pace of about 3cm a year. Also, we always see the same face of the moon because the moon was actually created from our planet billions of years ago when a large stellar object impacted our planet.

Let me try and explain this to you. The moon being 395 times closer to the earth then the sun whilst the moon is 395 times smaller then the sun is a coincidence. You argument about the sun shining during the day, and the moon always being in the sky during the night is not true. There are many instances where you can see the moon during the day, and no moon at night.

Read The Final Theroy by Mark McCutcheon - it will explain to you why we only see one side of the moon. The probability of the orbit being "exactly" that of it's rotation is quadrillions to one. There is no such crap as tidal locking peterloohunt. Orbits don't actually exist. They are a geometric phenomenon created by the theory that is explained in the book. So the moon doesn't rotate at all. I can't wait until the world excepts the theories in the book but probably not in our lifetime.

It's not a coincidence.
Our moon was brought into Earths orbit by an ET group from Orion.
It was brought here from Ursa Minor almost 12,000 years ago, and is currently host to several lunar bases in which various races observe us.

Nice vid although not scientifically accurate.If you measure from the core of the sun you get different figures.Isaac Asimov's quote is intriguing as he could know this sort of thing but why did he say it,when at what occasion & so.I found out that quotes can easily mislead if not accompanied by circumstances that led to the quotation.Then others can check sources,weak spots,light points etc.Eventually we will all become wiser given a chance & will learn what is coincidence or not.Live & learn !

@fatgirlfister Actually, the moon DOES rotate on its axis. It rotates once for every orbit it makes around the Earth. That's exactly the reason why we only see one side of it. Find an old tennis ball or something and try it out for yourself - you have to spin it while "orbiting" it around an object so that the same face is always pointing towards that object.

@fatgirlfister Yes, the moon rotates on its axis, it take 27.3 days to revolve around the earth, and 27.3 days to rotate once. The two are 99.9% synchronized. Explain why we see only one side of the moon with your theory.

Points: Isaac Asimov was an atheist. He wasn't interested in mysticism. The moon is visible equally in night and day, we just notice it more at night. This ratio of 395 is a coincidence and it is changing since the moon is slowly moving away from the Earth. Find something else to wonder about.

If you're referring to it's perceivable width in our sky, then put that marker on the video. You also need a course in how to use proper terms when necessary.

Umm, The Quran corrects one of your mistakes, You said "the suns shines in the day" and the "moon shines at night". The Quran STRICTLY separates the two in terms of their Source of illumination. The moon "reflects" the light of the sun rather than shining its own. The Quran STRICTLY adheres to this detail 1400 years ago. LOL. God is Cool!

if anything is possible, then its also probable that the moon is an artificial satellite, kept in place by unknown propulsion. I find it odd that they have only sent people to the moon once(even thats debatable)

(We sent people to the moon 7 times, not once, and also many many automatic landers. The 'moon hoax' theory is only superficially convincing, it doesn't stand up to scrutiny, I've researched it at length. Go to clavius dot org to check the actual facts)

It breaks my heart that videos like this reveal such scientific ignorance, lazy reasoning, and and lack of any real curiosity. There are so many mistakes in it that a very quick checking of the facts would have revealed. There are LOTS of moons in our solar system that rotate once each orbit and so show only the same face. WHY didn't you CHECK YOUR FACTS before adding to people's misunderstanding?! Don't you care about what's true or not?

Science is not a religion science is in fact very flexible, if something contradicts something then it will be looked at and revised to fit into the observed physical laws of reality. And yes there is proof of the big bang and we have a pretty good understanding how life came about.
Just so you know the big bang is not about how the universe began but explains the universe just after it began.
But there is really no point in trying to convince someone as deluded as taaronemore.

I believe that there is a certain equation that needs to be followed to form life in the universe. Like the formation of some elements that need precisely the right conditions to come into existence so the same goes with life. With that said there is so many possible situations in which this formula for life could have been exercised that its impossible that it hasn't happened millions of times.
