This is a great performance, even Russ' lead vocals are pretty descent .
:One thing I hadn't heard before- @ 3:32/3:33 the bassist misses his note (Oops!), keeps descending instead of going back to the start of the chorus.
But, I like it! These were the days when things were truly about the performance and about the moment-not the fkng production (ego's, background dancers, possee's on stage, ear monitors, etc!!!! I guess I'm old...
John Denver, wow. They say keep all your clothes, cause they'll come back into fashion one day. I can't see that day arriving for this ensemble. Good track, well ahead of its time.
This was a bit of a Anthem in the UK during the early 70s what with all the Industrial unrest and strikes etc, You had to keep your head up as a young man or got pushed down. It helped a lot of us stand on our own two feet. The power of music never ceases to amaze..............
Saw them the other night in Southampton - original line up - Ballard looks like he's 30 not 65 . Talent oozes from these guys - no egos either - thanks for a great night.
This is actually from the very first Midnight Special (actually, the pilot show) in August of 1972. It was hosted by John Denver, with Argent, Cass Elliot and Linda Ronstandt.
I love this song because it speaks to what's wonderful about young men who are just about to reach adulthood. One of the worst moments I remember as a mom was when my kid did something wrong and had to apologize. I would have liked for him never to do something he'd have to apologize for, but it was good for him. I wanted him to hold his head up, always.
it's a cool tune for us old guys jon...something we used to burn one to...trying to figure out what the heck kind of double bass that is, or if it's even a double bass...cool as hell though....but you're right though....it is pretty monotonous....and those shades....holy....
This song was played two ways...short and long version. This also was in the first tv spots they were doing. On Don Kirschners Rock Concert they had extended sets. On the album in 1974 they played the long version of the song. It could be confusing I suppose. (to the drummer?)
Not trying to argue or do any of the stupid keyboard wars that go on on youtube, but most bands look at each other to communicate. its not that he messed up. i play in a band and certain looks mean to do certain things.
Rod Argent did a great synth TV theme tune for an early 80s British computer-hacker drama series. No idea how it went, or the name of the show, I just remember loving the them tune.

Weird, never seen a double neck with a regular six string guitar and a bass guitar on it.

actually the "shades" are functional, russ ballard suffered an eye injury as a kid. Great guitarist and song writer

At 201 the drummer made a mistake you can see as they look back at the drummer to many beats they should have gone in to the next beat....

I'd rather here a tiny mistake than a lip-sync though....
