Most Li-ion cells made today will shutdown because the separators melt preventing ion transport within the cell at a temperature before the cells enter thermal runaway, it is actually one of the safety test cells have to pass.

you wanna do something cool, you know that when you collect the 2 poles of a car battery, it explodes and can be very dangerous. But do this with an industrial timer, set it and go away from the battery. Use th timer to close a strong relay that connects the + and - together.

One note is that: If it burst, Lithium reacts readily with air. Now, ever wonder why Li-Ion pack get on fire after it;s chucked in water? Water contains Oxygen. And, Lithium Polymer has limit of dielectric strength - as it get overcharged, it get blown up like a exploding car.
