It was so he could attack Shigure... and I'm assuming he didn't want to make his sword blunt so instead of hitting Shigure's sword with the blade he blocked with the back of the sword and cut off his own arm in the process. But don't take my word for it you'd have to see it and judge it for yourself. It's from episodes 99 and 100.
