The propaganda machine portrays hillbilles as either dumb, crazy, or both. I have learned that to be a complete lie. You people have your head on right, and have tought me so many things. Respect.
Thanks. I do need to get my seed bus. turning more sales. Thats the goal before I move, I also wonder about co-op's. My town is 1hr north of atlanta, ga. It used to be covered with farms, in fact the school i attended, UGA is well known for agriculture but I guess with the modern age and big growers out west farms went away and we dont have a co-op to sell at. I find it disturbing.
What could I do out there to make a little money just for taxes and internet and a few things that I can provide myself? Thats the only thing stopping me and my wife really. Im 40 now and screwed around so long hoping to buy a bunch of land to farm and now I'd settle for 1 acre.
You can sell stuff you produce on a farm or from your hobbies and crafts. Start a small business or an online business. I own a small business and two online businesses.
You guys Seem to live the good life without too much BS I reckon. Reminded me somehow of the Beachcomber Cottage (Mounty Halls great escape) BBC serie.
Too bad finding land where you are permitted to do that in my area is near impossible. I have had 3 separate realtors searching for over a year and the best they found was 13.3 acres for 160k$. I'm not spending that much for barren land. Besides i really don't need near that much. I just need to be within an hr or so of work in Waco.
Love these videos. What a totally responsible way to live. No government handouts needed. The only thing these people need is to be left the hell alone. We're working towards the same existence, and really appreciate seeing others do this, too.
4:50 is the way to go, the thing I see is many want it all and want it now and work all ther lives paying intrest to a banker never having the time to do what they want
Thanks for the tour! Not my kind of land, I prefer green and rainy (love the cold though), but it is really awesome to see this kind of living - out of the rat race.
I have a question about the depression. When your dad bought the place, did you say that the original tenants were homesteaders and had to leave? I would think homesteading would save you from hard times!
Very inspirational to see there's still a place in America that will let you build something so small. Too many of the building codes today want to force you into a large home.
Hello Lamar! Super nice video. I love the way you explain things. But tell me, in your state, how are homesteader properties zoned? Are they considered agricultural or residential or other?
Nice area! Its fun to watch your videos. I live in N. CA and was thinking abt building a small cabin on a old No-OP flat bed dump truck. Maybe it would be to small....Just trying to use what I have, I know I am that my husband and I are trying to figure out how to build on something moveable... Maybe the dump truck isn't a good thing... But we do have BIG dreams.
Please tell us if snow plows and EMS will respond to homesteads for an extra fee. If not, do you and your neighbors have a self-help plan? What kind of security and safety issues will you face this winter? We'd love to homestead, but as we grow older, getting help in a timely manner is a big consideration. Thanks, LaMar.
I live 10 minutes from a small town so all services are available here but if you get very far away from a town you should check that those services will be available.
Beautiful country! I am a fairly new subscriber, but I am loving every minute of your vids. I believe our country could learn alot from simple living...we are entirely too wasteful as a whole. Guys like you should be a reminder that we really dont need the rat race, and an inspiration to get back to our roots. Thanks for the vids.
One of the nice things about filming your old homeplace is you can't get in trouble for being there. I loved the national geographic style you used to show the different lifestyles and homes in the area. Great video, thanks.
Online businesses usually do not require a license- look at Ebay and Etsy. You can sell eggs, produce and homemade goods and handiwork from your homestead.
Thank you for sharing your family history. A lifestyle that is certainly far less stressful financially then the vast majority of Americans experience today. Look forward to your future videos! Best Regards
Do you have water.. I live in Utah in the same kind of terrain.. although it is a small town.. I would love to find a peice of property and live the homesteading way.. Great video..
@solarcabin Whoa 300 ft. bet that took some hard cash... I have been online in my area. but I don't see any land like yours for sale.. I like the idea of being way out of the way.. if you know what I mean.. I guess I could be a hermit.. LOL Thanks
Nice to see you post again LaMar. Looks like your weather is nice the winter as well. I am out in western Washington and it will be 50 degrees today. Please keep up the great informational videos.
These 'cedarbilly' homes remind me of the homes in rural New Brunswick. I'm aiming for the same size as a starter once I buy property. Apparently if you call it a 'shed' the local building codes don't apply ;-)
@solarcabin Sorry to keep bothering you but how is the water situation there? Do you have a well, do people use water catchment systems? Also, can you build anything you want or are the zoning laws strict?
No problem- good water here and I hand drilled my own well. We have some building codes here but some other counties in Utah are more lenient. Try Iron or San Juan county.
@solarcabin -- Maybe you could do a video showing a demonstration about how you hand drilled a well. Is your well 300 feet deep? That is a long way to hand drill.
You are so lucky.... To have grown up and live that way.... As a city slicker I'm trying to find away to get away from the city and have the rustic life.... It will happen, I just need to be resourceful.... Unfortunately I'm in a small metro area and my daughter is here. Otherwise I'd already be in Virginia...
I AM NOT ON EBAY. BUT I WILL CHECK THE TAX AUCTIONS... YOU SHOULD MAKE A VIDEO SPECIFICALLY ON THAT SO I CAN FIGURE THAT PART OUT. I WILL CALL A FEW COUNTIES IN THE MEAN TIME AND ASK THEM WHEN THEIR TAX AUCTIONS ARE...
People are so funny... lol here i took the caps off just for you.. but where in the world did people come off thinking caps is shouting?? where does it say that? no where in the manual where i bought my laptop does it say if my caps lock is on i am screaming:) i was just typing... not screaming... i love capital letters... i like to be different than everyone else... so that's why i do it.. i don't know why other people do it... anything else annoys you?? lol
