  • Leo Fender had no idea when he created the Jazzmaster and Jaguar, that they would be the 2 best Surf instrumental guitars of all time. And Joe was an exceptional Jazz musician.

  • Joe Pass was an unbelievable genius. No amount of practice will allow you to play like this unless you have the talent. You can become very very good, but this is off the charts.

  • this man is really outstanding, long live Joseph!

  • nice to see him playing on a Jaguar

  • Wow!

  • Truly gifted and he pays homge to those who truly invented the music.

  • I just came across Joe Pass's picking with Roy Clark in 1993 and I have to say I was surprised and amazed. He is truly a wonderful classy guitar player. He has the best back up group any guitar player could ask for..Great listening.....10 stars.....

  • Surprised to see him picking. Later style was playing with thumb and fingers as far as I can see, but I can't figure out how he gets the speed of picking that was like he does from the pick here. Later style must have grown from this, but I don't know how.

  • genius

  • phenomenal. joe's tone and phrasing are uncanny. when people ask me who my favorite guitarists are Joe is usually one the first people i name, unfortunately most guitarists my age have no clue who he is.

  • I had a '62 Jazzmaster and traded it in on a new Jaguar because of all the chrome and switches. I hated that thing and right up till today would have sworn that Jaguars sound like crap. Shows what I know. Holy Smokes.

    Ron

  • @RonVermillion Don't sweat it. It ain't the guitar. It's his hands.

  • @mikestrat56 Correct. It isn't the guitar (or the gear. . . oh, and by the way, there wasn't a whole lot of "gear" available to musicians ca. 1962), but the guitar player.

  • @rayjr62 You're right. If we think about all our favorite electric players (regardless of the style) and their best stuff, you usually find that all they used was just a guitar and an amp. In other words... Practice! ;-)

  • This is true vintage Joe..way back ..before he had hair...What a Master Player...Youv`e just got love this posting..!!

  • My favorite guitarist , and i dont have favorites..His playing style is ingrained in my mind since a young boy.I really enjoy the video..Thanks for the great upload..Bravo , Bellissimo ....

  • No kidding. Thanks for posting this piece of history.

  • It is a massive piece of history. Such good posting.

  • thank you so much for post this video.

  • i believe this was just after he got out of rehab for heroin not having played or practiced for a while and not even owning a guitar borrowing the fender from a friend. wow

  • Comment removed

  • I read that he played during rehab. Somebody saw him playing on a beat up old Strat or something and brought him a decent jazz box. But he went to rehab more than once...

  • pre-moustache.

  • Sic! Love it!!!

  • i've never herd a fender sound like this really amazing

  • isn't is a fender jazzmaster?

  • It is a "Jaguar" with single coil pickups and the switches both ways up and down.you can see the logo at the 1:37.

  • Best Jazz guitar ever to play on this earth!

  • Pat Martino is a sweet player but Joe Pass is in a different league...

  • Who is that piano player? I suspect it is Eddie Costa, due to his looks and style but I am not sure.

  • wow, thats not a common jazz guitar lol

  • why not? its a jazzmaster :D

  • also, its a jaguar not a jazzmaster

  • From what year is this video ?

  • Gold video

  • You have to love a guy who plays single note solos as well as Pat Martino and chord melodies as well as George VanEpps.
