Having grown up in North End Halifax I remember Africville well. I was young naieve and uneducated so di not think much of it other than it was there. How attitudes have changed. There actually was a keen religious and family sense of community despite the conditions. Being isolated can often lead to this just as in the outports of Nefoundland. What an injustice was done to that community when their lands were expropriated to build the on ramps to the new bridge.

It is a shame, but unfortunately it is history. Otherwise, why not give the Acadians all the land that they were kicked off 400 years ago? Or why not move everyone of European or African descent back to their country of origin so that the Natives can have the Americas. It's done, overwith. All we can do is start from here and move on. @sackville10 Don't give me that bullshit. Just as many Indians and Whites in Nova Scotia are on welfare as Blacks. The only reason the numbers are so much higher is because there's like 50,000 Black People in the entire Province, but there's like 800,000 Whites. Put it this way, if there was say 10,000 Whites, and 10,000 Blacks Unemployed in the entire Province. The Unemployment rate for White people would be 1.25%. But for Blacks it'd be 20%. See?

We learn from our past and our mistakes. Ignoring what has happened distines us to relive those events. We obviously haven't learned when we see comments like this. This example can been seen all over the world. It is happening between Oil Companies and us regular people. Anything for money and who cares who is taken advantage of. We also are convinced oil has to do with the middle east yet record profits in the industry are from the U.S. We need to take respinsibility and do the right thing.

@parkdale420 I learned about Africville in my Black History class in Walton High School in the Bronx. We also learned about the settlements of Birchtown, Cape Negro, Preston, Tracadie, etc. :)

It is a shame, but unfortunately it is history. Otherwise, why not give the Acadians all the land that they were kicked off 400 years ago? Or why not move everyone of European or African descent back to their country of origin so that the Natives can have the Americas. It's done, overwith. All we can do is start from here and move on. We should be looking at the future for our children and using the past as a lesson.

couldnt have said it better myself! However, there is more involved in the dislocation of peoples than simply a scattered community and broken legacy. The capital gained from the Africville relocation and the indigenous relocation has contributed to the colonial hegemony that is intrinsic to North American (white)prosperity. this must be reconciled before we can simply move on.

But Mishel24, there is a big difference between something that happened 400 years ago and something that happened just 40 years ago! We should be doing exactly as you have said - using the past as a lesson. Obviously this was not the case with Africville. The reasons for this injustice in the face of so many past injustices needs to be examined; the nature of "colonial hegemony" and it link to "North American (white) prosperity" cannot simply be ignored. To say, as you have done, that "it's a shame, but unfortunately its 'history'" is tantamount to being indifferent to the suffering and injustice faced by others!
