if this is true why do they dig up my garden looking for 1 nut if you seen my garden you would think i had moles in it i Dont think they use there memory at all i think its just years of luck or in my case bad luck they are all born with memory loss
I love squirrels and have 4 regulars in my garden and perhaps another 6-10 occasional raiders. I've known they are highly intelligent for a reason. I have to say my squirrels would have found the nuts once they were moved to another cup. they would always look first in the prime cup, but would always check, the surrounding area thoroughly. Perhaps it's because I'm always playing tricks on them and they have become more adaptable.
@Intr0spector Oh that's interesting, you ought to film them, I'd like to see you playing tricks on them. I played tricks with my squirrels too and they seemed to love the attention.
@DickGhostmoon I have uploaded some squirrel clips if you check my username. But they are not close up and my camera isn't great. If I had a decent camera I'd film them all day. I've seen them do perfect backwards somersaults, gang up 5 on 1 with a domestic cat, fight steal each others nuts, superman dive 10 feet off a brick wall. Every day is another squirrel adventure lmao
I found one squirrel in my place which try to open a plastic bag to eat what was inside. I pass by him and normally he should have go away but was busy trying to get what I though was nuts in this plastic bag. When I came back later, I found the plastic bag empty on the grass. I could saw where he open it. But, when I read what was inside that bag... I found out it was pure chocolate, no nuts!?!?
@DickGhostmoon Would they prefer chocolate to nuts? I know birds seem to prefer meet rather than bread! When I give a small part of meet to birds.. other start to attack the one who get the bite! While bread does not make that angry and furious effect.
Did you try moving the whole row over 1/2 feet so the cup stayed in the same spot, but the position in the order of cups was different ? Great video, thanks.
Your little experiment confirmed my own observation. I scattered almonds all over pebbles many the same size as the nuts & unless the squirrels come immediately upon one, they won't know where a nut is, even if it is just a couple inches from their nose. They would still be frantically searching, turning this way and that... I've watched two litters from pups to adulthood the last 10 months, so your observation that for squirrels it's mostly spatial mapping, memory, & sight was on target.
@DickGhostmoon No, I don't have video. But the ground outside my windows is elevated, so the pebbles/nuts are just one foot down, 2-3 feet away.... so I can put my nose next to the windows & see the squirrels no more than 2-3 away, so I can see them very clearly. I saw David Attenborough's observation (LIFE OF MAMMALS) about color-blind squirrels knowing the difference between two kinds of pine nuts which are just tiny shade difference, which is hardly visible & I got curious...
@chokladpuding No, he is not, did you even watch the video? If he could smell where the nuts were he'd have found them under the other cup when the guy moved them. He didn't find them, just kept going to the red cup, because he remembered that the red cup was the one that had nuts under it before.
Did you know that over 1,000,000 squirrels are killed every year by taxidermists? Please watch my video to become more informed about his epidemic, and learn ways you can make a difference. How else will you find your nuts?!
Squirrels are very fun creatures, and I think your experiment was great! Can't wait for the next test of their abilities! I agree from my own observations that they have no sense of smell for nuts and also that they can barely see nuts in your hand as you hld them out to them since they will often just try to eat your finger instead of take the nuts! But the are cute and easily trained to come down from their trees when they hear a clicking noise as long as you have nuts for them!
@McDaidUSA That's a good point. If they bite it's usually an accident because they're cautious. It's not a good idea to test their reaction by startling them because they are masters of escape and will do the unexpected. One time my phone startled a Squirrel and quick as a flash he jumped at my face. I never saw him coming, and he was gone when I realised what had happened.
@DickGhostmoon Wow, I've never had one jump at me like that! And when they bit my finger it was gentle, and I had a leather glove on. Today I was sad to see a lone squirrel sitting out on a tree limb again today, looks sick I think, at least his tail fur is all thinned out, and he doesn't move much. The trees here are full of squirrel dens, and apparently none of the other squirrels will let him in, and it is freezing out. I worry that he might not make it.
You should try the same experiment moving the entire set of cups to a differnent spot where he can see them, and see if, one he goes to the cup and 2 if, since it will be a total different "route" to get to the cups, he will start fresh and check every cup or would go to the same positioned cup.
Free energy has been here for a while ,But the Oil coporations life depends on covering this up,Find this technology at LT-MAGNET-MOTORdotCOM ,Start the energy revolution!
That's not fair! Sampled squirrel lives on MIT campus, therefore it is an extremely intelligent specimen. Try that with one from....say, Duke or Notre Dame, LOL!
@TheNwoRebellion no it doesnt remember he kept changing the colors of the cup and even used new cups...so the squrrel wasnt relying on smell but its memory
i like your vid, how the hell do you have pacience to sit there that long though?? haha, i would be soo tempted to make a quick movement to scare the squirrel away or something haha
@jasiucasic2 Thanks, I wish I had it on film but those squirrels liked to scare eachother. One of them jumped straight at my face when another squirrel creaped up on him. They laugh as well.
This is a Great experiment! With an experiment like this the researcher(you) is trying to learn something new about behavious in the world, an explanation of ‘why’ something happens and you did a good job, the thing about observing animals in the wild is that its a true experiment, because it does isolate and manipulate an independant variable. I must say that the penultimate stage of the experiment was very clear and did prove they do not smell. Awesome!!
Love this. Just wondering, why didn't this guy just use less tape and put tape only on one cup? :) ? I think perhaps the squirrels have a highly tuned nose for all things nutty?!
my question is, how many locations can they remember when they hide 10,000 nuts as you said. It will ofcourse be much easier to remember which one from 5 given locations (that are clearly marked) but when it comes to hiding them underground all over the place...
Anyways nice analysis (I definitely learned from it), always wanted to know whether squirrels have any sense of location at all (cause it always looked to me that they were randomly searching)

They are good eatin, fried , barbecued, in curry sauce, hot sauce, breaded, baked, boiled, broiled, in white sauce, in chili sauce, in tomatillo sauce, shooo even microwaved. You just have to make sure you gut em good, let em soak overnight in saltwater, I sometimes pressure cook em in potatoes/ carrot / onion mixture. Little water and salt to taste. Yummy little shits.
Excellent home experiment! I also noticed that he went for ther second cup from the wall almost every time. Lookes like they used landmarks as well as color to locate the nuts. 5 stars
wow nice experiment. I noticed that there were some variables not accounted for at first but you cleared them up at the end with the different color cups. Good Job Matey!
Dude. No homo but squirrels are so freakin cute. My friend found a baby squirrel when lightning took a tree out in the neighborhood. He kept it and name it sunny lol. He stayed in the oak tree outside his house but when he called for him he would jump from the tree to my friends shoulder

5 stars

Dude. No homo but squirrels are so freakin cute. My friend found a baby squirrel when lightning took a tree out in the neighborhood. He kept it and name it sunny lol. He stayed in the oak tree outside his house but when he called for him he would jump from the tree to my friends shoulder
