  • I believe you know your stuff on Bobby. Yes, he was the lead trumpet for Q for years, but there was more than one trumpet in the section and Cat was the upper register guy. If you are truly 50, as your profile says, that would make you about 13 when this recording was made. I was a student of Cat's and he'd talk about Ironside, Cosby, and all the other sessions he had done between times we saw each other.

  • @sdartist1 A lot of folks would re-record the various theme songs over the years. However, this doesn't even sound like Cat Anderson. He had an amazing range, but never sounded like Bud Brisbois. Ask Larry Meregillano or Geoff Winstead and either one will tell you the same thing for sure.

  • Fat Boy here needs to work out more.

If yer gonna be heavyset, you'd better be able to move yer heft around.

  • That's so great to know, thanks! Who are you? I always knew Bobby Bryant had incredible lead and jazz chops, not too aware of his extreme upper register so this is an awakening...

  • i was just woundering if their is anyother iron side episodes on you tube. like this one for example!!

    ps sorry about spelling!!!

  • Listen to the sound- that is not Cat; it's Bud. Cat sounded totally different in the high register. I'm not saying better, worse, or whatever; just different. And fwiw: Cat didn't solo like that; he was a great soloist, but that ain't him.

  • Would someone please settle this Bud/Cat debate. I'm dyin' to know. Tone sounds more like Bud to me. Is it possible that it isn't Cat or Bud ? Who else could it be ? Definitely not Maynard.

  • It was Cat. Take it up with Quincy Jones. He hired Cat for most of the studio things he did in those days. Ironside sessions were a steady gig for him. Bud was busy doing The Mancini Generation, Hanna-Barbera cartoons, touring with his own group and battling his own demons. In the early 70s both of them had no problem finding work in LA. Everybody wanted an upper register artist for their shows.

  • Yeah, sounds more like Cat Anderson than Bud Brisbois.

  • There was some serious talent on that soundtrack. I agree Brian if you have the movie please post it all.

The orginial theme-not the TV theme is one of the best track I have ever heard. Quincy Jones did a heckva of a job.

  • I do have the movie, however.. YouTube's policy is to limit clips to a total of 10 minutes. I really don't want to have to make like 12 or 13 separate clips of this... sorry. This can be found on ebay quite often though.

  • You don't have to do the whole thing....Just the opening scences would be fine with the original theme and the end theme and credits.

  • i dont mind about this as long as us fans can watch it, here i love this one its my fav one!!!

  • Sorry, but no way is it Cat pal.The other cats are right it's Bud. I was his student for the last 1&1/2 years of his life and this is definately him.

Don't get me wrongCat was a great player and a sweet cat[pun intended] but even by this time he lacked control of his pitch.

I have a lot of Bud's date books (and the main trumpet he played)and I believe this date is in one of the ones I have.

  • Hey bigjim.. where are you located at? I also took lessons from Bud when was living here in Arizona. The thing that's confusing is this... I'm like 99.9 % sure this is Bud. However, I was watching some of the clips of the series Ironside (as opposed to this pilot film), and Cat is unmistakable on those.

  • @brian740 It was Bud Brisbois, as every serious trumpet player knows - see Kevin Seeley's site devoted to Bud and Bill Chase, for example.. As for Big Jim - Jim knows his trumpet players and he knew knew Bud about as well as anyone - especially towards the end. Jim is a great trumpet player in his own right, as he played with Manhattan Transfer and Joey DiFrancesco and unfortunately had to turn down Maynard several times, because of the logistics.

  • It is definitely Cat Anderson. I was a student of his at that time and went on several studio calls with him. I don't recall him having any trouble making a living in L.A. as a studio player. He seemed to always be doing a movie or a TV show. Ask Paul Cacia (another of Cat's students) to confirm this as well. What a nasty rumor to spread about a great player.

  • I heard that Cat Anderson played on some of this. They tried him out as a studio player, but he didn't have the "right stuff" for many gigs, given his limitations.

  • How about posting the whole movie.

  • fantastic trumpet work, more likely to be Brisbois rather than Maynard since it's studio work
