  • I think I saw a Gibson custom shop reissue of this very guitar last year at a local music store.

  • What I like best about watching these old clips is how, not only were they tearing up the guitar, but they're being entertainers as well. You dont see that much anymore

  • AnnaAnnaYES - thank you! It's always nice to hear from a true "subject matter expert" about these things....

  • you have to love how he looks like he truly loves and has fun playing and performing. Why we all love him

  • Virtuose de la guitare et qu'elle pêche Roy !! Yeahh!!

  • If Keith Urban EVER thinks he is ANYWHERE near this man on a guitar

He'd better wake his ass up and SLAP himself!!!

  • Un-freakin-believable. Roy, you have an incredible talent on multiple instruments, but especially this one. Is the guitar an ES-175 late 50's or early 60's?

  • @Wally991 Roy is playing a customized Gibson Byrdland,he used them early in his career

because Billy Byrd and Hank Garland(the two guitarists who inspired the initial design) were

    influences of his.

  • Looks like William Shatner of today

  • What guitar is that? Looks like it has a P90 at the bridge and a Charlie Christian pickup at the neck.

  • Roy makes great faces, he always pretends he's not sure what he's doing, the sign of a true virtuoso. Man, do I miss Nudie suits.

  • Roy clark and william shatner need to release an album lol

  • Take a look at a master, folks. A master. A master guitarist and a master entertainer. A brilliant, jovial mind given the blessing of virtuoso guitar talent. Take a look at history, young folks. It doesn't come this pure that much any more.

  • Roy Clark, Buck Trent 2 of the best. Eat your heart out Brad Paisley and you other country wanta bes

  • its fun just to watch his face and see his expressions

  • i want that guitar.

  • The picker of all pickers.

  • I think the guitar he`s playing is a Gibson Birdland, can anyone confirm this?

  • that guitar is probably worth more than my truck! lol

  • @kevin462 it is now,lol

  • this is amaaaaazing!!! unbelievely talented this man!!!!

  • :)))))))))))))))

  • This man make Guitar sing

  • roy clark is one of the greatest and most underated musicians ever, imo.

  • He's sick. I love his style, very effective. Jerry Reed is a bit more virtuosic I think, but Clark is definitely a sick, sick player.

  • What an amazing guitarist!

  • ¿Qué fué primero, El Circo o Alabama Jubilee?

  • LOL, hold number three 3 on your keyboard

  • Buck Trent, Roy Clark two of the greatest

  • no doubt a genius! Super versatile also! Wonder what's he doing now?

  • This Roy guy can't even finger tap or dive bomb! Who gives!

  • there aren't a whole lotta people getting over 20 pages of posts, there ya have it.

  • wrong, it's maybe a guild. sorry about the paul.

  • It is such a shame that this current generation does not produce music like this anymore. You will never find anything of this caliber, this complex simplicity, on television anymore...unless you somehow find a repeat of this show.

  • This man is my favorite country shredder of all time..!! Good ol' "Super picker"..

  • porter was quite the country bumpkin... that charlie christian pickup is worth some dough.

  • I have this stuck in my head all the time

  • I dig Porter's threads. Roy is the best!

  • Even to a death metal fanatic, Roy is one hell of a guitar player and one classy dude.

    Oh, and love the Byrdland

The guy @ 1:26 in the blue plaid shirt is loving it

  • Roy Clark said, "I think there are a world of better guitar players out there than me, but I can claim one thing, and that is, no one ever had a better time playing guitar than me."

I watched Roy on that show when I was a kid and later I really got into heavy metal...but I never stopped listening to Roy...never.

  • @1138thz When you mentioned how you got into metal, after being a fan of Roy Clark for a while, that reminds me of a metal guitarist named John 5...unlike most metal guitarists, John 5 can also play some great country guitar. His guitar work is kind of like a mix between Brad Paisley and Steve Vai (but without ripping either off).

  • @badfinger848

The great country guitar player is an awesome sight to behold. Steve Morse, Zack Wylde, SRV, and so many more Greats have a country background. Great is Great no matter the style...Anyone that tells me that country boys can't play outside the box or in it is dead ass wrong. And I'd like to hear John 5. On another note, here is a great bass player enter-- Uzeb Solo Alain Caron --into YouTube 7.23 seconds. And enter ' Les Paul - Jeff Beck - Jamming Together ' into Youtube...

  • is he playing a byrdland?

  • That kid playing air guitar is probably 48 now.

  • One of the most under-rated musicians of our time... guitar is only one of his instruments, and arguably not his best...

  • The Wiggles sing this.

  • @henningstrannin Could not have said it better. All my life; listening and or watching Roy has always made me happy. And I normally listen to Metal!

  • Roy could definitely jam! And I just noticed his rhythm guitarist is playing an old Mosrite guitar, nice. :D

  • Who doesn't like Roy Clark??

  • How do those gals keep all that hair balanced while clapping so vigorously ??

    Talent & practice, I bet...

  • @HeinekenPete - LOL on that post!

  • pure talent....like to see some of these new country stars attempt this

  • @heywoodjosh Brad Paisley, Steve Wariner and Vince Gill are probably the three youngest country guitarists who could play stuff like this...and, of course, Chet Atkins named Wariner a C.G.P. To be fair, however, Paisley, Wariner and Gill's playing styles all differ from each others' and from Clark's too.

  • I don't care what the setting,

an electric pumpkin orange suit w/ a green tie & a black guitar,

    would fit in ANYWHERE.....!

  • Comment removed

  • Roy Clark is just too cool...!

Great clarity & headroom on his vocals!

"Porter, where do you keep the batteries for the suit, Dude?"

  • You spelled it wrong you heard him you should change the title to alerbamer jubilee

  • An epic guitarist and a natural entertainer. This stuff makes me happy.

  • Epic sideburns on Roy.

  • A true musician is one who can transcend generations

that is why Roy Clark is a legend

  • Clark was good but one guy who always impressed me in a sort of underdog way was Jerry Reed. Man, he could really play and you wouldn't think it by looking at him. I mean, he could pretty much keep up with Chet Atkins.

  • My God! What a trip back in time. Pause it and look at the women in the audience. Those hair styles and the glasses. That aside. Roy Clark is one awesome multi-talented instrumentalist. I loved watching him and Buck Owens on Hee-Haw. Thanks for sharing.

  • daaamnnnn my nigga???

  • he's got skills!

  • One of the finest versions of this song! Just amazing!

  • Roy Clark could play a fine tooth comb if you gave him 30 seconds to tune it...

  • @rizorburn Best summary of Roy I ever heard.

  • What planet are you from? Roy is not underrated its clear he is one of the greatest ever, if you know strings, you know Roy Clark! He can play anything with strings!

  • Websters should put his face next to the word TALENT in the dictionary.

  • Anyone know who the other guy is playing beside him? Must have been kind of embarrassing having to hold a guitar next to Roy. Kind of like singing backup next to Pavarotti...who's gonna even know you're there?

  • @DingoMonkey

Think that's Buck Trent. A very capable performer in his own right.

  • Roy looks like a big fella. Reminds me of Hoss Cartwright. Wow! lookit 'em go!

  • nice shred LOL

  • Why does it look half black and white @ :03 and 2:24?

Roy is still the best today.

  • Roy Clark plays with lots of finesse. Check out Alabama Jubilee with Jerry Reed, also pretty awesome!

  • jqtomlin I was about to say the same thing. roy is an amazing guitarist and very underrated

  • Amazing guitarist.

  • roy is one of the most underrated talents there is

  • I saw roy live in branson at his celebrity theatre and boy was he good. This guy is so talented. I think there must'nt be any musical instrument this guy can't play,

  • Great guitarpicker!

  • In my top 3 all time favorite guitarists. Randy Rhoads was also, and still is, true talent. No matter how many years go by Randy's stuff stays new.

    Cheers from Texas!!

  • With his tongue stickin out and all.. He is STILL the best!!! lmao

  • # 1 and always will be. Today's country music players dream of being this good! ....even Brad Paisley is far from this good!

  • Easily one of the greatest guitarists of all time.

    *Ray*

  • @Ray50005 You're deaf.

  • TOTALLY AWESOME!!!

  • great!

  • Good song, I like it and favorited it! Also... 1:10 Awesome and 1:20 Mosrite Combo/Joe Maphis guitar!

  • Maybe Jerry did a few movies, but ol' Roy did it on TV every week for 23 years, and is still goin' strong in Branson!

  • Smokey and the Bandit(top movie of 77 next to Star Wars), Smokey 2, Gator, WW and the Dixie Dancekings, Bat 21, The Survivors, The Waterboy. He wrote songs for and played on Elvis' records wrote songs that Johnny Cash and Porter Wagonner recorded. Recorded instrumental records with Chet Atkins.

    Enough said!

  • I love this song, and I love his voice + guitar. This guy has earned the right to play this song with Chet... and they did a damn good job :P

  • interesting guitar, looks like a p90 near the bridge and some sort of old japanese teisco type pickup near the neck.

  • Isn't it a Gibson Byrdland?

I'm not 100% sure, but man that's a lot of guitar.

  • I saw Roy Clark on the Odd Couple show just the other night. I'm not a big fan of this style of music but this guy is awesome. Who cares who is better than who, just sit back and enjoy! :)

  • How he just clowns around and plays with the audience, you can tell he's having an absolute blast with what he is doing. He also laughs because he knows nobody can hold a candle to him. I'd laugh too!

  • I love this clip....he contributed so much joy to us and is great at all his crafts and man, he's just so damn funny on top of it all!!! Thanks so much for posting this, enjoy it a great deal!!!!

  • Man i LOVE those faces Roy makes when the playing gets hot lol

  • Porter laughs like a PSYCHO KILLER =D

  • holy shit now i can't stop watching the beginning lol

  • I've always been a big Roy Clark fan. First of all there are a lot of great guitar players here on youtube and I enjoy listening to every one of them and I hold them all in the highest regard.

Having said that Roy Clark is a great entertainer. There are a lot of great entertainers but I don't see how anybody anywhere anytime could have ever picked better flatpick guitar than he does. Roy, I've seen you in Vegas and if you're still hanging in there and you read this keep up the good work.

  • pretty sweet but jerry pwns this guy

  • Be nice.

Why would you point out something about the guy that he doesn't advertise?

  • well sorry!!

luckily i expect its unlikely roy will ever read my comment

i just thought id recommend jerry reed and be a bit of a dick about it at the same time :P all in good humour

  • True, true.

I often find it hard to discriminate between good- and bad-humored dickism. My bad. Thumbs up for you.

  • I'm a huge fan of both but, roy is not only a better guitarist than jerry reed but he's a better actor as well.

  • You are wrong on both counts.

What movies was Roy Clark in?

Jerry-Smokey and the Bandit, Gator, WW and the Dixie Danckings. Bat21 etc.

Jerry was a much better guitarist and a composer as well.

  • Jerry was more versatile in styles at least openly. Roy played hell out of banjo and I have heard from some people who know him he was very accomplished in Chet and Merle type finger work but prefered flat picks. Its not hard to imagine it being true with his natural ability to play damn near anything. And he was in 3 movies one with Mel Tillis.

  • Jerry was better with a flat pick when he was playing that way as well!

  • roy clark rocks. a killer picker.

  • Roys guitars a little thin...kinda tinny don't you think?

  • I wonder what he could do if he actually put some effort into it. He's just having fun here

  • Good...but he needs more practice...I'm not feeeling it.n

  • hmmm try picking like him

  • this is where i would be while all those hippies were dropping acid at woodstock.

  • WOW...

  • Maybe it's just me but this guy reminds me of a white Freddie King.

  • or maybe Matt guitar Murphy.

  • He screwed it up at 5;13

  • lucoff,

Not sure who recorded it first, but the credits I've seen are Yellen/Cobb as the writers.

  • is this a jerry reed song?

  • I am more of a Schon, Lukather or S.R.V. fan simply because I like rock/blues. But damn, Roy Clark smokes that guitar like a cheap cigar. Just for the hell of it, I would love to see Roy Clark throw in some tapping, reverb, T-Bar and harmonics. That would be fun to watch. Roy has my respect. Damned fine musician.

  • I could Eddie Van Halen and David Lee Roth tearin up this tune.

  • I love this kind of Guitar playing!...so mood is so uplifting...Long live rockabilly!

    THe Top 5:

    Brent Mason

    Scotty Anderson

    Albert Lee

    Roy Clark

    Danny Gatton

  • You forgot the one who was the greatest influence on every one of these pickers you mention; Joe Maphis.

  • The Jimi Hendrix of country music.

  • I think some people in the crowd are plastic crossed with black and white. Amazing!

  • I wonder if that little kid grew up to be a picker.

  • Man, I love that guitar he has. Such a great sound.. P90 bridge and Charlie Christian neck. I need it.

  • Everytime I watch this video, it makes me put my guitar down for a week. Roy Clark is amazing!!! Not only is he picking lightning fast, but he is clowning around. Wish I could find tab of this song...it sure is a good'un!!!

  • I am really amazed by roy clark. I have been playing for decades. But I respect him very highly as a supreme god gifted true entertainer musician. Maybe there very best at that art. O what audiences he has entertained, what accomplishments ! Staggering really !.

  • Roy Clark just kills it!!!!

  • have never seen him do any rock N roll anyone have any video's they can put on here or know of any? This guy is amazing.

  • I saw Roy in Vegas a bunch of years back... HOLY S... well, you get the idea.

While I hold all of the guitarists mentioned by ragdoll in high esteem, the truth is they are not as talented as Mr. Clark.

At his show that night, he did country, bluegrass, blues, told jokes, and even pulled a few rock tunes. He played guitar and banjo, and mandolin, and just tore the stage up!!!

Let's see these rock instrumentalists do that.

  • Becker has fast fingers it seems...but I didn't notice any music..just some wierd techno sounding garbage. Impeliiteri aslo has fast fingers and his stuff starts to resemble something like music. Buckethead isn't fit to hold Roy's guitar. Malmsteen has promise. I guess if you're just into fast fingers but no actual coherent song the above mentioned might amuse you...Roy still has more musical talent across a broader spectrum than about anyone. It's my opinion. Peace

  • Roy can Sing, Entertain and Play...Man Can He PLAY!!!!

  • No one plays guitar better..period

  • im not gonna lie he is very talented and im amazed and some of the thing he does

  • Nice to see someone mention Buckethead as one of the best pickers. As far as country, he's up there, possibly better in some ways than Clark, Reed, Atkins, etc. Glen Campbell is another one.

  • The Best, Simply

  • im from, and in alabama, yay

  • Who's the bassist in the Nudie suit?

  • I must agree with an earlier post, this would be better if Roy used an Ibanez with a locking trem so he could do dive bombs. He should have played through a Marshall stack with distortion. Should have grown his hair long, couple tattoos, leather outfit, etc. Then he would be a great guitar player like Jimmy Page or that Malmstein guy. Every one knows Rock is harder to play then Country. Thats why you never hear about Roy Clark and ALWAYS hear about Dimebag; Dimebag played Rock, which is better.

  • I like rock and i knew Dimebag so with all due respect, Roy Clark has been able to influence more than just the genres of rock and country but jazz, blues and folk. I can't say the same for those other guys except for maybe a few rock icons.

Roy Clark is a master when you're talking music. That's like saying J. L. Webber would be better if he gave his cello distortion. Seriously dude.

  • I believe he was being sarcastic.

  • My goodness. This YouTube is such a blessing for us music lovers who want to see and hear such marvelous performances as this, Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed's on Alabama Jubilee.

We can actually argue their virtues...this wouldnt have beern possible earlier...Thanks...no, deep abiding gratitude

    to the inventor of YouTube!

    Tom

  • i did enjoy. thank you very much!

  • Due to the guitar in Roy Clark's version, I like his version better than Jerry Reed...but let's face it--both could play guitar like no one else!

I must say that, altogether, I do like Reed's music and playing better...still love Clark's playing though!

  • WHEW brother could PICK!!!

  • You're not getting the point here-watch his guitar playing. It's unrivaled by Jerry Reed or anyone else. Watch the breakdown part at 1:25. The "weird" part Zigzag refers to is Roy imitating the "mama" he's singing about in that line.

  • Jerry Reed was a much more musically sophisticated guitarist than Roy Clark.

Roy is a great guitarist and entertainer but Chet and Jerry were in another league!!!

  • Yes zigzag,

1:56 was quite the spaz move of todays standard. Thanks for pointing it out, It was a gut buster

  • 1:56.....hmmmm thats weird

  • I love Roy Clark with all my heart.

  • Anyone remember the "Wyler's Lemonade" commercials he did?

  • Youtube... How about making it so people that can't play better than Roy can't make stupid comments.

  • thats true i stand corrected.

  • 2:20 he's a badass.not quite the music I listen to,but a great guitarist is a great guitarist.Another amazing more modern country player is Scotty Anderson.Brad Paisley is great too.

  • How can any guitar player not smile at his picking? What an all-around entertainer!

  • His style is more close to the one that Maphis did. Roy Clark was another underrated guitarist. You don't see anyone like him, Reed, Travis, Maphis..or really...anyone else like that any more!

  • His talents are very diverse, too; I enjoy his renditions of Malaguena and Tico Tico.

  • Absolutely! I remember getting into his music through bluegrass. The first time I ever actually saw him play (believe it or not) was on the Beverly Hillbillies. lol!

  • Love this, folks, but.... I think Jerry Reed's take is much better

  • Well of course Jerry's was. You're comparing apples to oranges.

  • Maybe you're right. I forgot to say I'm Spanish, and maybe my level on country music is not higher as yours. Anyway, I love both, but Jerry is better (in my modest estimation)

  • You're right, Jerry is better and Scotty Anderson's version is better than Jerry's.

  • Thanks man, I'll try to hear Anderson's one. Greetings from Spain.

  • I watched this thing about ten times in a row.

Can't get enough! Go on, sic 'em, dog!

  • that would be a gibson birdland, also made famous by uncle ted himself ted nugent.

  • "made famous" :) I hardly doubt it. That guitar was famous before your uncle Ted was even born.

  • so cool. And thats the most beautiful guitar i have ever seen.
