@HoshiHikari the only way they could separate is if your keycard ends up as the last card, in which case you know that the selected card is the first/top card. if they separated in some other way you messed it up.

There is a special case though. If the last cut is between the chosen card and the card you looked at, the chosen card is on the top of the deck whilst the card you looked at is at the bottom of the deck.

Perhaps you can counter scam someone if the try to use this trick on you: When the ask you if you will be a beer that the next card the turn is yours you change the rules. Ask them "just to be clear if the next card that is turned is not mine then I win a beer?". Make sure that you don't say anything about who has to turn the card. If they say yes then you agree to the bet and turn another card quickly before the can turn your card. A free beer to you :)
