I really like your words....my partner was Buddhist we are not together now but o think about it from time to time as I suffer a lot at the moment...I just wonder what my family would think of they hear me chant as I live at home, any advice would be great.... Also can you chant for like 10 minutes or 20, an hour seems as tho it would be too long and get boring, again any info would be fab, take care...Daniella (30 Yr old) x
@kelvinfromlondon Hey Kevin. There is a center in Kings Cross. A little shop where you can buy some beads. However, they are not totally necessary to begin. They simply add to the experience. What is important is to chant daily and focus on your goals. :)
I am just learning about Buddhism. I'm from the U.S. and there isn't really any place I can go to learn about it.Thanks for posting these videos! If there is anything you can tell me about where to get more information or what you have learned that would be awesome! thank you!

@thelukemobile666 it is important that your observe your mind when you chant and focus on what you are doing. So just keep reminding yourself that you are chanting whenever you catch yourself thinking of something else. Not to worry, we all struggle with the mind "running" away.
If you have a Gohonzon then focus on the Character "Myo" which is your life :)
@thelukemobile666 anything you like. there are no rules. the idea is that through your daily practice you will learn to master your mind, your emotions and find true and deep happiness from within.
Shakyamuni Buddha who first spoke the Lotus Sutra did not speak ancient Chinese orJapanese, so I should be able to chant the Lotus Sutra in ANY language and have the same effect, am I right? also does just chanting the title of the Sutra enough or should I actually read it and learn from its wisdom. Seems like just chanting a title is a kind of missing the whole point, Especially in a foreign language. you make it seem like a magical incantation. The original Buddha would disapprove
@Jackthemeat I agree with you. and have asked the same questions. no its not a magical incantation. Action is required to achieve the determinations we set out for our selves. Faith, Study and Practice are the three pillars of a strong buddhist practice. Chanting helps master the mind, and allows us to manifest the buddha nature. It is the practice that is profound, perhaps not just the words, but the whole ritual. Chanting brings courage, wisdom and strength, through mastery of the mind.
I have heard that tribes in forest areas chant a mantra to tame elephants. It is not in their language. Do you think if they chant that in english the elephant will get tamed? no. A mantra is a carefully combined set of words. We can not change a mantra that was revealed to us by a Buddha. (Sorry if I am not clear enough)
ooh that's not nice... sorry 4 misunderstanding. My SGI friend and I often have coincidence n synchronicity, more than my other friends so not surprised. I am reading "Basic of Buddhism" by Pat Allwright and doing my own version of the prayers w/chant and therefore I don't go to meetings tho often invited. Will be interesting to see if I can keep some of my SGI friends by being on the "outside". tnx for reply. :o)
@animae8 I dont think its about "testing" people to see how they might react. I dont think that is fair on anyone. Why dont you give it a go with the SGI, there is no obligation and you dont HAVE TO go to meetings even if your a member. noone is going to force you. its just nice being part of a family of people who all want happiness and peace for all.
No 'test' cuz no 'attachments' also my SGI friend knows where I stand with membership. The meetings feel a bit religious (ritualistic) or AA meeting (witnessing), not knocking it but not what i'm choosing right now, tho i understand your power in group chanting.
Luckily my existing good friends outside SGI are like 'family wanting happiness and peace for all' n so im very very glad for that. Also my family lost history roots are Buddhist, n this is nice so when i chant it's familiar.
Interesting you posted on ur blog about an "arrogant" person on Youtube stating "SGI is a Cult" and being I commented on Youtube mention around the same topic, near same time... Do u mean my comment being "arrogant"?? I didn't think I was being arrogant but rather gentle"... If so, that would be very defensive of u and in itself "arrogant". I hope it's just a coincidence.. or synchronicity.
@animae8 hi friend. That comment was not at you. it was at someone else who basically DEMANDED that I left the SGI, and only then he would talk to me or be my friend. We both want the same things in life. Why should I simply drop the people that have supported me the last two years, just becuase 1 person says that his way of pracitcing "the law" is better.
It doesnt matter how you practice, all that matters is that you do. His comment was arrogant. I was defending my beliefs.
Wow, cool u replied so soon. Yes SGI really really promotes group meeting/chanting but thanks to affirmed my solo practice chanting without the group. Also I customize some of the "prayers" in the Sultra by leaving out what I feel uncomfortable with. I've done many spiritual practices but unique is the vibration of the verbal chanting of the SGI mantra. it's an area I would like to demystify with time. It's interesting a mantra that is not my native tongue can be powerful as an affirmation.
@animae8 keep going and keep enjoying. nam myoho renge kyo isnt the SGI mantra, though it is the title of the lotus sutra, which was taught by The Original Buddha. Śākyamuni. He was an Indian prince. Defiantly read about his life, its very interesting.
I believe SGI chanting is powerful and can move one on a deep emotional level. As with other forms of GROUP meditations, transformation is intensified so it makes sense this group chants together 4 more potent results.
This group "SGI" is sometimes classified as a cult by x-members. I haven't seen this aspect yet, but I'm new to their teachings... it's a shame that SGI has been tainted with this allegation both in Japan and in Western nations BUT is a 'red flag' of caution for me.
@animae8 always be wary of every thing in life I think. never go walking in to something eyes closed. always question and stand up for what you think is right. you dont need SGI to practice, but in my experience it is a great support with some wonderful people. there are always gonna be egotistical people in any organisation. just have faith in "the law" which is just your infinate potential as a human being. nothing more. nothing less.
Cool to get reply. Yes SGI REALLY promotes group/chanting and so thanks to affirm about my solo chanting. Also I customize some of the "prayers" in the Sutra that I feel uncomfortable with. I've had privilage of meeting this young man some seven years ago. I will always sincerely wish to consider him a friend. He really is one of the worlds "nice people"
Thanks Robbie. I loved your video! I think it was very heartfelt, honest, and inspiring. I think I am going to give Daimoku a try..thanks for all the videos...
you are welcome. could you give me some links i have already contact the center Taplow so what is like in the first time ? i have been in one meeting so far so great.
hi i am YMD leader in GOA/INDIA, recently i was dumped by my girl friend, she wanted someone who stays abroad and rich.. feeling bit upset because she showed me as if she truly loved me, but when she got someone who works in uk she immediately told me that i cannot marry you since you are not a catholic but hindu....
Robbie - your videos are just amazing! I have wondered about the Nam Myoho Renge Kyo chant since a close friend shared MIss Turner Turner's video. Your explanations and elocution of the chant are awesome. I'll be sharing your videos with my friends. Best always, Stephen
@spiritWander50 it doesnt matter what ur initial cause is for chanting, fundamentally it changes you from the inside because it shows you what you need to change about yourself in order for those things to become actualized in your life . Just cause you chant for a car or a job, if you are not ready, your practice will bring those things out of your life that are blocking you from acheiving TRUE happiness. Not material things.
is chanting only to get stuff? I would think I use it to change Me not whats going on in the world. I like the struggles in life they are like weight lifting. Always getting what I want Is not always good for me. But I suppose it is nice to have things go your way at times. But I saw man on a video being decaptied by terriorists once. If he chanted this wouldh it have saved him? I doubt it. but I do chant.
thanks for your message! chanting is different to the law of attraction, becuase it is about chanting for what you need and not what you want. You could chant for 1000 dollars, but action has to be taken to receive this money.
Chanting isnt a magic potion. It empowers us to taken action in our own lives.
Just got back from the beach (making sure I had a plastic bag with me), collected bits of plastic to bring back home for the recycle bin, removing the potential of seabirds swallowing and subsequently ceasing, as well as restoring the sea/beach to a state of harmony. Eagerly watched seabirds take flight (who were watching me) and being content with the wind, the clouds, the mountains, the sea and the sand. Every grain of which on every beach is nowhere near the number of stars in our Universe.
I from SSA Singapore Soka Association Thx to upload video. Use ur inner spiritual and lum myo ho renge kyo. Mean Mind Heart one point to the scroll of lum myo ho renge kyo. You see the MYSTIC.
Thank you for your words of wisdom- I love the part in the end when you say that putting your hands together, is taking control of your own life. That was powerful within its SELF. Thank you!
I just want to say that I have watched several of your videos and have been encouraged by your journey. I was recently introduced to Budhism and was seeking testimonials when I came across your videos. Thanks for making them. I like your honesty and your truthfulness and wish you all the best in life. P.S even though I am female, I think you are very hot and hope you find real love
We might be talking about two different things. I'm referring to SGI-USA which I believe was separated from Nicherine Buddhism.
At SGI from USA they told me they were the only truth and only their chanting works.
But I believe what you say, that there are many paths to enlightenment, and my religion is not the only way!
Gandhi, Martin Luther King, Jesus or even Buddha himself never chanted "Nam myoho..." and they were enlighten beings. This is great, but there are many Paths!
The SGI do not believe they are the only truth! There are many paths to wholeness. Being a nicherine buddhist I respect all other paths and as a buddhist we never say our way is the only way.
I appreciate that Robbie is telling us about SGI with good intentions, and I really believe he means well! But I really recommend that if you are thinking about joining this organization, you better do your research! I'm very open minded about all religions. But when SGI is using the fear of karma to join, bring new members or if you try leaving, then it becomes a CULT!
Be aware! There's tons of comments from ex-members who had been threatened with getting bad karma if they leave or if they don't bring new members!
Besides, they claim to be the only truth and that only their Gohonzon and chanting will work! It's total manipulation. I have found many other meditations or methods that work in my life!! Did you ever hear of the Placebo Effect?
thank you for your comments, but I am yet to see the real proof of what you say. My experience in the 7 months of my pracitce in the UK has been love compassion and friendhship, nothing more is required of you.
thank you so much for explaining SO well exactly what the intent... I have started only a fewq months ago and the benefits are endless.. nice to hear such a clear positive attitude and expanation
I am sure that you learned about the "temple issue" when u were at summer camp. trust the writings of Nichiren, and there are the answers.
Also the validity and proof is in your practice and personal experiences. Also, I really enjoyed hearing the experience of your old friend. We can do so much good in the world! mrs fields
Hey! Sorry to be so long to reply, am anxious to see a new vid. How is the new job? Dad? I am chanting for you too. I will send u Pres.Ikedas letures, plz email your mailing addres to send the magazines to u. Your friend, mrs fields
SGI does not follow the directions of the head priest in Japan- They have be excommunicated from the Head temple- I first was intro. to Buddhism by SGI- The Gohanzan from SGI are fake- I had one- please be careful Robby- I think I am here to teach people that are unaware- even wikipedia tells you this--please look into it- I didn't understand it- BTW- faster is not better- each character is a rep of Buddha.
Shut up. Stop bothering the new members practicing with the SGI. Robbie has obviously experienced "ACTUAL PROOF" by chanting. He knows that this practice works the way it should be and will be proven useful in his life. We don't need people like you posting comments on videos saying that the SGI is doing everything wrong.
btw, the SGI is an organization practicing Nichiren Daishonin's Buddhism that has been spread to over 192 countries.
I'm 15 years old born into this practice and it works =)
Great information. Thank you for sharing. I just attended my first meeting at SGI Los Angeles and feel so much at home and am eager and encouraged to practice.
This practice works. I have manifested a fantastic job and joy and happiness are on the way :-) the world is changing. Be part of the change, one person at a time :-)
yo!! you are in the right place! listening to you speak tells me you are really listening and learning and on your way !! well done Robbie we are very proud of you!
Hola:) tienes valentía y eres lindo!:) du bist sehr mutig und schön!:)Te ves lleno de vida y además transmites confianza! Gracias! Du bist voller Energie und gibst mir ein Gefuehl des Vertrauens! Danke!
Hello from Asheville NC USA...you are so encouraging tho only practicing for a short time.....to all out there...find a SGI New Years Day Meeting and start your 2009 off with the teachings of Nichiren Daishonin. Happy New Year
Obstacles are never 'put here' to help us grow. They are the effects of our own bad karma we ourselves have made by our own past or present causes. If we are fortunate enough to have good karma that allows us to challenge our karma effects, we can then use them to our advantage and grow from them (turn our poisons into medicine) Chanting NMRK allows us to make excellent good karma in our lives so that we can change anything. :o)
I always enjoy your videos. Although I may have heard the content before, your beautiful sincerity and lack of ego gives everything a whole new meaning sometimes. It's a bit like the difference of watching a movie on a 30 year old TV or in HD. Wonderful stuff! Perhaps to improve things even more would be some happy smiles added here and there but that will come soon I'm sure. Thank you...
If you are not truly happy within, you cannot possibly be happy with things on the outside. On the other hand, if you are truly happy within, youre much more likely to cope better with your surroundings. Chanting NMRK not only allows one to become truly happy within but also the wisdom to make better choices of our desires on the outside. :o)
No worries! You're doing great. I subscribed to you not only because you can because you're funny and insightful but also because you inspire me to keep chanting and stay on my spiritual path. Like you, I finally got a solid job with good people after nearly 4 months barely making it on a part-time job and having to move back into my mom's house (oy!).

But when SGI is using the fear of karma to join, bring new members or if you try leaving, then it becomes a CULT!
Awesome5333 2 years ago
Awesome5333 2 years ago
thank you for your comments, but I am yet to see the real proof of what you say. My experience in the 7 months of my pracitce in the UK has been love compassion and friendhship, nothing more is required of you.

Great vid - as a newcomer to this can you give me your opinion as to whether this is a religion, or is it a philosophy?
dmm985 2 years ago
Hi there, its a bit of every thing! It is mostly a way of life and a way of being.
RobbieBobbyBoy 2 years ago
Thanks, its still all a bit confusing!! but I suppose thats the challenge to overcome, one bit at a time.
Best wishes.
dmm985 2 years ago
You can call it a religion.
If you have specific questions do let me know :-)

nice vid, I mean really good. But there is no 'happiness.' Life IS suffering. All 'happiness' is, is the temporary forgetfulness of that fact.
Doggieman1111 2 years ago
Life is suffering, life is joy, life is love, life is here now, not yesterday or tomorrow. This moment is the only place we have power.

I am sure that you learned about the "temple issue" when u were at summer camp. trust the writings of Nichiren, and there are the answers.
Also the validity and proof is in your practice and personal experiences. Also, I really enjoyed hearing the experience of your old friend. We can do so much good in the world! mrs fields

SGI does not follow the directions of the head priest in Japan- They have be excommunicated from the Head temple- I first was intro. to Buddhism by SGI- The Gohanzan from SGI are fake- I had one- please be careful Robby- I think I am here to teach people that are unaware- even wikipedia tells you this--please look into it- I didn't understand it- BTW- faster is not better- each character is a rep of Buddha.
rawbuddhist 3 years ago
I'm 15 years old born into this practice and it works =)

rawbuddhist-
what do you mean "fake"?
What do you mean "follow the directions of the head priest in Japan"? It's not Catholicism and the head priest is not infallible.
But one thing you say is correct: "faster is not better"

fast or slow. The intention and the words are what is key.
rhythm and with a single sound.
thanks for your comment :-)

Just one thing you said was not quite correct...
matureasian 3 years ago
Thank you! I agree with what your saying about the causes being the results of the obstacles :) thank you for your wisdom :)
RobbieBobbyBoy 3 years ago
I always enjoy your videos. Although I may have heard the content before, your beautiful sincerity and lack of ego gives everything a whole new meaning sometimes. It's a bit like the difference of watching a movie on a 30 year old TV or in HD. Wonderful stuff! Perhaps to improve things even more would be some happy smiles added here and there but that will come soon I'm sure. Thank you...
matureasian 3 years ago

So anyway, thanks for encouraging me and so many others :)
