  • @MiracleFruitClock I was really surprised that they didn't offer Martin Landau the "team lead" spot after Steven Hill got canned during the first season. Peter Graves was too wooden. I actually liked Steven Hill better, and then there was one episode where he didn't appear because the studio was having problems with him, and Landau substituted. He was pretty good at the job!

  • @TrollBuster9090 I agree so much Roland Hand a.k.a. Martin Landau would've been great as the lead roll. I also think it would've been cool to have Ethan Hunt a.k.a. Tom Cruise be Roland Hand returning. Now if we can only get Martin and Barbra back together :D

  • @TrollBuster9090 I think the reason why steven hill was canned due to his scheduling due to his orthodox religion he was pretty much at arms with desilu plus martin landau was a special guest in season one and bruce geller wanted him badly as a regular and it paid off then the show went downhill after him and barbara bain left due to contract negoations good job paramount

  • Aside from Hawaii Five-O, this is the best theme ever for a TV action series.

  • @RobParliament I'd call those two themes a very close race for #1. The comment by rbnn told the secret of Lalo Schifrin's catchy theme: 5/4 time. That also made "Take Five" by Dave Brubeck popular back in the '60s, because 5/4 time is rarely used by composers and isn't quite as easy to play instrumentally as the more common 4/4, 3/4, 2/4 or 6/8 beats; 7/4 time is the only one I know of that's even rarer and harder to play. Hawaii Five-O's secret was the drum rhythm plus a great melody.

  • @RobParliament I think I'd add Knight Rider (the original) to the short list of great tv theme tunes. Definitely my top 3 fav tv tunes to date - with Perry Mason in 4th with its sultry jazz sound.

  • Unlike other spy series of that era (Man From UNCLE, Wild Wild West, etc.), Mission: Impossible didn't insult the viewers' intelligence or rely too heavily on suspension of disbelief. That's what made it arguably the greatest spy series of all time.

This all amounted to perhaps eight stations at the very most, all of which we watched on black and white televisions. We positioned the rabbit ears to gain clear images. Most of the time we were not successful. And yet, we had some of the best programs around - and Mission Impossible was one of them.

  • I always preferred the theme song to Mission Impossible over the one to Hawaii Five 0. When they premiered this song on American Bandstand, only one person really tried to dance to it! LOL!

  • they would try to produce good shows like this but they have drug addicts and whiney little wooses who dont want to do what their paid for ,instead they do one show and it becomes a hit and they want more money or they quit, and besided the actors now simply cant read more than see the cat run. as well as the script writers,they would rather hang out at starbucks all the time.

  • The Cold War (and popularity of Sean Connery as James Bond) made this series very plausable.

    There was also, Man from Uncle, I Spy, The Name of the Game, Probe/Search (1972/73).

I guess I'm not surprised since everyone in Generation Y now claims to come from a dysfunctional home. Sheesh. I watch season one, acting is well done (not great as many would claim) but the premise is not believable. The writers focus more on the drama than plausibility. But to each their own.

  • I loved this show because of the authenticity it represented. The Cold War was no joke as many programs emulated the period of secret agents on dangerous missions.

  • One of CBS television's best shows ever, sorta like CSI now. Many people didn't know that Martin Landau (Rollin Hand) and Leonard Nimoy (Mr. Spock) usually interviewed for same roles. Landau was chosen for Mission Impossible and later left series of which Nimoy replaced him. Landau interviewed for Star Trek's Spock but was not chosen. Interesting? Landau has Oscar for Ed Wood; Nimoy does not have oscar.

  • @itschelseabxtch95 Martin Landau turned down the role of Mr. Spock because he didn't wish to become limited by the unemotional nature of being a Vulcan. Leonard Nimoy had to concentrate very hard to maintain the Vulcan persona. He has previously admitted that he had some days which were uncomfortable because he was crying between scenes.

Not only did it throw away the ensemble for the sake of a single protagonist, but it had the audacity to turn Peter Graves's character into the villain. Paramount might as well have made Captain Kirk the villain of Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

    Mission impossible 1 Tom has that team at the begining: JAck, Sarah,Hannah,Claire,Jim!??? then later on he's got :Luther claire and momentarly Krieger!?? then Mi2 :Ethan, Luther, Nyah and Billy baired!?? Then in Mi3 Ethan, luther, declan gormley, zhen and momentairly Lindsey. thats 14 people were as the tv show(not including the newere seasons) had Jim, Briggs, Rollin, Cinamon,willy, barney and thats only 6

  • @MrSherlockWatson The existence of a team is not the same as an ensemble cast. It's an entirely different dynamic altogether. The show was about a group. The movies are about an individual, Ethan Hunt, even if a group is present to support him in his missions.

  • While the movies are good, even if stuffed with so much PC, the TV shows were able to accomplish in less than an hour and with a fraction of the budget, as much excitement. What a great series.

  • @evileye7546 Because it's the BEST one hour program ever aired on TV back in the late 60's and early 70's. The new and supposibly improved Mission Impossible with that shitty actor, Tom Cruise and Jon Voight, bickering and arguing amongst themselves, was NOTHING like the ORIGINAL Mission Impossible. This is the best that it gets! But, you would have to have been born in a year to appreciate the original.

  • I looked at these videos this morning to see how the fuse actually worked, and it's interesting how it changed. In most later seasons, the fuse animates from left to right, and as soon as it gets to the far right it just jumps back to the left (on a cut). In the first season, when the fuse gets to the right, it animates back to the left, WITH THE NEXT SHOT, which pushes, along with the fuse, from right to left. A fine distinction, perhaps, but one that adds to the excitement of the montage.

  • Theme music's written AFTER the 1st few shows, so a composer knows what kind of music he's scoring for - & AFTER credit images are chosen. But when Lalo Schifrin wrote MI, the pilot filming was behind. He'd met the actors; read the script; knew it was a suspense-secret agent show & seen some pilot footage. The opening images still weren't set; all he knew was there would be a burning fuse on the screen but the images hadn't been chosen yet. And he had to write a theme. This is the result.

  • The opening of the show kept me on the edge of my seat! I couldn't stop my heart from racing and I find it difficult to believe no other TV show tried to duplicate this type of opening, talk about fast paced! This show was the best -
