  • It was actually written for his lover while he had a wife. Later he divorced and married his lover.

  • so emotional, a time never to forget, The First Time Ever I Saw Your Faces my babies, I miss those days

  • RMRY!!! I LOVE THIS SONG!!!! The video is beautiful. I see I commented 6 months ago, but hadn't saved it into My Favourites!!! It is now exactly where it should be!!! At the top of my list!!! Thankyou Carol x x x

  • @mathismagic37 Hello Carol. Nice to see you here. : )

  • from Jose', the Hermeterec......Roberta Flack did a heart-breakingly beautiful rendition of this incrdibly beautiful song, but Johnny Mathis has not now, nor has he ever had any equal. He is the greatest popular music singer of all time. His voice is like warm honey sifting slowly and sweetly through the comb. His control and phraseology are impossible to equal, he is touched by God.

  • @Hermeterec You sir/madame are a gifted wordsmith who has captured the essence of the great man. Honey will never be the same, maybe now known as spreading 'johnny' on your toast kids'!

  • This song was written by a lad from Salford (my home town).... Ewan Macoll, which is next to Manchester UK, nothing AT ALL to do with Scotland!!!!, his daughter also had a couple of hits in the UK - Kirsty Macoll!, consider yourself educated!, my favorite version is Roberta Flack's, but that said ...this is beautiful...

  • Play Misty for me?? Roberta Flack was the first time I ever heard this song, however Johnny is doing a great job of it!

  • Thank you this song brings back so many teen love memories from the early sixties.

Life was an open book in those days and we felt we could conquer the world or at least stop the Vietnam war. I guess we eventually succeeded but at what cost? But life was sweet then......wistfully looking back to yesteryear..

  • I ABSOLUTELY LOVE this song, it is one of my all time favourites. I do wish he would sing it in concert. Perfect for when he sings with Gil.

  • How did I ever miss this one? As much as I love Johnny, I don't recall hearing his version of this most moving, heart warming love song. I do remember, though, "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" JB, and we've been married for 52 years this month. Thank you, ReadMeReadYou.... A perfect wedding anniversary gift....

  • @Grandrose3 You're welcome and enjoy your special anniversary. God bless you both.

  • man, i don't know how he does it. but...here i am choking back tears. he could sing the phone book and i'd probably get soggy. looooove him.

  • He destroys me. Heard him from the womb, listen to the grave. The best.

  • The most beautiful, moving rendition of this song! I get to see Johnny this Friday night live, and i'm not sure of anything i have been more excited about... His voice makes me stop what i am doing and just feel ~

  • @peacefuldda "Feel" is a perfect way to say it. I know his voice just penetrates me and it's a great feeling. Lucky you for seeing him last Friday. : )

  • Last August during my nephew's wedding, someone performed this song while the bride walked down the aisle. It was so beautiful that it sent chills down my back.

  • Thanks for sharing, Sounds like a wonderful experience.. I've heard of others who have had this song at their weddings but not as lovely as you described. It's a beauty by JM.

  • nobody can sing it like mathis himself. 13 times live...can't get enough

  • the first and only time I ever heard this song was by Roberta Flack. Johnny's version is quite impressive. Never knew the story behind it. In fact, I thought this was a "Roberta Flack original."

    Great video!! Thanks for posting!!!

  • Thank you so much for stopping by and commenting.

  • Not a bad song pretty beautiful for people who are in love I guess!

  • ayudaaaaa si alguien me puede decir donde encuentro I`m just aboy of love de johnny mathis se los voy a agradecer, no la encuentro por ningun lado, gracias

  • He was not Scots, English - changed his name from Miller.

  • Both Ewan MacColl's parents were Scottish therefore he was - just because you are born in a stable doesn't make you a horse! Yes he changed his name - to a pen name which expressed his commitment to Scots folk music and the Lallans Scots tongue of which he was a great exponent. Even his songs were influenced by the Celtic musical style and ballads of which he was so fond - this song being an example - see Barbara Dickson's rendition on youtube. The name Miller is not only to be found in England!

  • I don't remember this song being played in the movie "Play Misty For Me," but it could have been. I rmember the caller, played by Jessica Walter, called DJ Clint Eastwood making a request saying, "Play Misty For Me," which meant she wanted the song "Misty" played which he would do.

  • I did some more research and it appears this song was played in the movie, I learned the following -- "There is one odd montage in the middle of the film which is like a music video set to Roberta Flack singing "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," in which the characters Tobie & Garver roam through the landscape and end up in a secluded pond. The use of this two year old song in the film actually propelled it to #1 on the charts and made a star out of the relatively unknown Ms. Flack."

  • I'm glad you liked it and thanks for sharing a bit of your Johnny meeting. Always fun to hear about them.

    Angela

  • Johnny Mathis does a simply flawless version of this song. It's absolutely beautiful. There is no better singer in the world or this lifetime than our dear Johnny Mathis. I love him and ALL of his music. I just saw him in Cleveland, Oh on Nov. 6th, 2008 and got my picture taken with him plus he was kind enough to autograph 2 photos made out to me...Thank you for sharing this song/video for all the world to hear.

  • I agree the greatest male singer in the world.

You are so luckey to be able to see him live.

  • Johnny really does a superb job on this song. When I first heard it, it sounded like a prayer, as if inside the hollow acoustics of a cathedral. What I find amusing is that it's from the movie, "Play Misty For Me." In other words, the title is a request to sing a Johnny Mathis hit song!

Breathtakingly beautiful sunrises (esp. the red one) and sky shots.

This is another song I was going to put in my collection, but as long as someone else does, I don't have to!

  • I knew about the movie. You and I seem to like the same songs. I'm so glad you like this one. As I played it before uploading, I got all teary-eyed. It's such a lovely rendition of the lyrics. And, as I also said in a comment here, it does sound like a hymn. Right from the soul.

  • I'm so glad you liked it. I think the lyrics are so lovely because they were written by a Scottish man for his wife. And, Johnny sings it almost like a hymn. A love bond is very spiritual. Beautifully done by Johnny Mathis, as usual.

  • the song was written by kirst'y McColl's father for his wife in 1958

  • Thank you for the added information. So, the family was filled with talented people. Her father had a way with words. Gorgeous lyrics.

  • yes look up peggy seeger.she was his wife it was written as a folk song.she's still alive .cheers

  • Thanks, I'll do that.

  • @ReadMeReadYou Does anyone have this album "first time ever I saw your face? on a cd? This is Johnny Mathis' best work, if anyone has all the songs on that album, "first time ever I saw your face" on a cd, can they send me a copy? contact: gemeyes at sbcglobal dot net

  • @gemeyes2 No, it's not sold on CD yet. Lately, several of his old albums have been released again. Be patient. This one may be next.

  • i love the pictures the pictures make you think and thats good and a nice song
