  • Cinema graphically one of the BEST movies in the last 50 years.Story wise beyond compare. This scene is replayed in Toms mind because the director knew every guy would want to see that ass kicking and head choppin' again. No mind...nah.. no head!

  • i got to learn some martial arts of the samurai at police training academy

  • Good scene! I would have shot the flashback from his point of view tho, would have put the feeling of adrenalin to the audience!

  • there might be a movie mistake

  • this movie was made in the tradition of movies like "horse" with Richard Harris or "dances with wolves" with Kevin Costnar. White man becomes at one with culture of "NATIVES" and experiences a change to love his new way of life.

  • Man this got had everybody in like 20 seconds. That's probably the most action I've ever seen in a movie in 20 seconds

  • Tom cruise teaches non-samurai people how to use gun, not sword... xD

  • 5 vs 1 ... waaa he k pall !!!

  • Yeah, right. An American trying to teach samurais how to use a sword... how stupid. I´m glad I didn´t watch this stupid movie even though Tom is a great actor.

  • @budfr Err... There isn't a American teaching samuari how to use a sword in this movie. Maybe you should ACTUALLY watch the movie before spewing out hate.

  • @SolusArmatura I haven´t watched it. But I have watched excerpts, and Cruise fights Japanese experts and wins. that´s BS. Maybe you are the kind that believes Rambo movies are real or that Robin was able to defeat Kato ( Bruce Lee ) when the had a melee in the crossover scene of Batman and The Green Hornet.

  • @budfr Your comment is off topic and confusing. What does Rambo, Batman, The Green Hornet and such have to do with "The Last Samurai" ?? The American (Tom Cruise) in this movie was training the Japanese Army on how to use more modern weapons and tactics. Never once did he try to teach swordsmanship.

  • @SolusArmatura Is that so??? I haven´t watched it because I thought it was about Cruise teaching sanurais how to use swords. Maybe I need to watch it. Anyway, the scene were he defeats many Japanese is totally unreal.

  • @budfr

this movie is kinda like avatar in a way.

  • @budfr You shouldn't be trying to criticise a movie when you haven't even seen it. He was training with the Samurai. Last Samurai is really one of the greatest movies ever, I'd put it among Kingdom of Heaven and Troy with the "old style" warfare movies.

  • @budfr funny, any trained japanese could take 5 two bit warriors out.

how come a trained white man can't?

thats what we are up against, here on planet earth...

asians menwho won't ever respect anyone but their own. asian women who play us into bed, but never forever, just until hubby catches on, or they get bored.

a warrior is a warrior...and usually that means, KILLER. i don't care where you come from. every race has their killers, and last time i checked...its anyones game. DEATH.

  • @budfr Steven Seagal taught Japanese people Aikido in Osaka, Japan

  • @conanfiles OK, but he had to learn it first from the Japanese masters.

  • @budfr sure he did. anyone has to learn from someone else. nobody is born, informed.

in order to be informed, you must always learn.

this was a good movie. i do like japan.

  • @budfr

    3 things...

    1. Cruise's character was a war veteran who had experienced way more battle than most of the samurai he went up against. His fighting skill/spirit was part of the reason why their leader respected him and spared his life.

    2. There was nothing to suggest that these assassins were samurai. Sword doesn't samurai make.

    3. Fighting skill really has nothing to do with nationality. The guy who has fought most or trained best usually wins, regardless.

    Hope you liked the film.

  • thank god this is a movie..

cause in real life this would be more like... 1 asian dude vs 5 white guys

  • @en10

except when it'll be 1 Polish dude vs 1 Japanese

    otherwise I agree

  • its one of the best fight sequences seen so far....

  • Anybody notice that cruise doesn't shout thr first time when he kicks the guy in the face, but during the replay he does??? Wtf???

  • hey, anybody think of actually commenting on the video instead of politics?????

  • I wonder how much training actors like him have to get when they play roles like these.

  • killer

  • What sort of moron forgets his gun...:-) Indiana Jones never did this shit...

  • @sc00ter12

    lmao

  • Lol that's just embarrassing.

  • esta pelicula esta excelente

  • If you read Miyamoto's the book of five rings you can easily take down 5 opponents, and practise what he've wrote down.

  • Cruise is a fag!! he was a gay wrestler before he made it in hollywood.

  • Nicely choreograph!!!!

  • Japanese poeple must rise and defeat the evil imperialist with NINJA SWORDS!

    HAIYA MOTHERFUCKER!

  • my favourite scene in this movie

  • No mind...

  • it's been a while since i saw this movie. can someone remind me of why these guys were trying to kill him?

  • because he is a scientologist

  • hahaha

  • epic answer rofl

  • @19misiek87

Who cares what he believes, the fucker can act and that's all I care about. Shut up.

  • Omura, the Japanese fellow in charge of the modernized Japanese military, orders his men to kill Algren (Cruise) if he attempts to warn Katsumoto, the leader of the samurai, of the impending attack upon the samurai and of the assassination of Katsumoto.

In this scene, Algren is on his way to the quarters of Katsumoto to warn him of the events mentioned earlier when he is ambushed.

  • Nice comment AlllsBrawl, but I go with the answer from 19misiek87 ^^

  • I love this movie..

  • Oh thank you for the idea of being Japanese it completely worked , so to speak i made 10 000 fishes out of 10 that s a code too of course.

  • What gotz777 said is right...there is no last samurai, even in this modern world there are samurai. Still following the old tradition however i doubt they fight as Samurai with the new weapons and all, they just live as Samurai.

  • this abast

  • I love this movie.

Ha ha... Tom doesn't fuck around. LOL

  • the worst part about this movie: Tom Cruise as the lead.

  • that's lame, he's a great actor.

But just because the press has bring him into discredit, for being in a weird religion (for me every religion is exacly the same shit). Now jerks like you say he's a bad actor

    you americans are really retard

  • what makes u think denisefan is american

  • he is,

but i was talking about the press, and the influence of the religion in EEUU, and the stupid morality in the media

  • totally agree with patataton and I am not americans IS one of the best of his generation

  • Do your research on his "religion" and you'll find that it isn't just weird, it's a dangerous cult.

Peoples lives have been ruined by bankruptcy. Some can never see their families.

The ones that leave are harassed into suicide by the church, some even killed outright.

On that note he is a decent actor and I like almost every movie he's in. That doesn't change the fact that he is funding abuse and murder.

  • You foreign people are really retarded.

See what I did there? I made a total generalization about the entire population of the planet. Kind of like you made a generalization about my entire nation.

It might not seem that way, but it's basically the same thing as saying "you black people are really retarded"

And that is a generalization based on someone's skin color. Not nice is it?

  • True, true...

  • @Ltbird you seem to have no sense of place or time..... and, a bit preachy to people that are not racist... :(

  • @gwatson678 I think my response was fairly appropriate to "you americans are really retarded"

  • @Ltbird you're not very bright.... and it seems that when you call Americans retarded... you are merely projecting....

  • @gwatson678 Perhaps you should read before you comment. I was responding to someone that said "Americans are retarded" and providing an example of why making generalized statements is wrong.

  • there will be no such thing as a last samurai.

    this world is a cesspit.

    pray

    pray hard

  • foda

  • que elegante!

  • Awesome decapitation.

  • according to an interview with cruise this was done in 1 take and covered with multiple cameras staged or not that is impressive

  • the technique at 1 09 is a tomoenage

  • No, It's Yoko Sutemi Nage

  • Glad they showed that again in slow mo! Hard to catch everything at once!

  • DUAL KATANAS FTW!

  • I like the way he cut his head! lol

  • beautifull jujitsu techniques

  • i dont understand the point of bloging. it seems most of you think movies are history classes. they're just films for entertainment, all this debate over what's what is a waste of time, cant people just watch the clip and move on? most of you people here are narcistics and feel the need to be heared on youtube. societies are getting worse by the minute, so get a life people.

  • it isn't bad though.

it's okay to get a perspective of how history was or could have been.

Of course it's not real, even a movie based on a real story isn't entirely true.

  • "most of you people here are narcistics (sp) and feel the need to be heared on youtube. " - zeeeeeba. On YouTube.

  • I forgot: heared (sp)

    P.S. pwnd

  • It's "spectres in the fog" right???

  • owned

  • The last samurai was a white guy.

  • its also a film :P

  • It's pretty cool the way they show that he's fighting "no mind". It's not until afterwards his aware mind knows what he has done.

  • It looks like his whispers "no mind" to himself just before it starts.

  • yes he does whisper "no mind'" to clear his mind

  • Pretty fly for a white guy!

  • As much as I dislike Tom Cruise's religious fanatacism, or anyone's for that matter, I really have to respect him as an actor. to great in every movie that I've seen him in: Collateral, The Last Samurai, all the Miss. Imp. movies, Minority Report, even though the rest of the cast was shit in comparison... and let's not forget Tropic Thunder, who saw that coming? He really is one of the actors I respect the most in Hollywood.

  • this is the best film on earth

  • I've always thought Collateral was his last film before goin all crazy...

  • just owned ^^

  • One of the best Choreographed scenes of multiple attack randori, I've ever seen in a movie, from a realistic point of view. It shows that he's finally learned to empty his mind, and in doing so his training takes over.

Learn the way, then forget all you've learned. Then, find your own way.

  • What?

  • This is the last film before Cruise went crazy in my opinion. His best work since Jerry Mcguire.

  • are you all retarded........ its a film. Who cares about who would beat who. I love this film but you people are too factual about everything. Can't something jus tbe enjoyed?

  • "I love this film but you people are too factual" I love the play Macbeth, but it has nothing to do with Scotland's history. I'll have to rent this film, as I boycotted it when it came out. I'll just sit back and say "this has nothing to do with Japanese history."

  • Well~!!! the last samurai is set in the Meiji era, when Japan was modernising. it did show how the problems of modernisation of Japan effectin itz tradition. And the samurai because they lost their privilege started the uprise, Boshin Civil War and Seinan War. so i a way it did show Japanese history the struggle of people during that time. But yeh~!!!! it doesn't realli depect the actual history.

  • "it doesn't realli depect the actual history." Macbeth doesn't depict history either, but it's still popular. Thing is, only a few people REALLY believe in those weird sisters. Too many people think this film is based on actual events.

I would have liked a movie about the real Satsuma Rebellion. It wouldn't have to have to use an American star or have a "romance angle."

Have you read "The Last Samurai: The Life and Battles of Saigō Takamori" by Mark Ravina?

  • No not yet, i saw the book before, but never had the chance of reading it. So you would recommend me to read that book?

  • "Would you recomment me to read this book?" Yes. I'm sure there are better books on the market, but I don't read Japanese. This is one of the best books in English on the subject. The story of how Saigō Takamori could go from leading the Emperor's soldiers to leading a rebellion is fascinating.

  • whatevz people...the fight scenes from this movie are so sick...excellent choreography and technical skill. despite the fact that i think t.cruise is a total scientologist nutjob he is pretty badass in this flick.

  • 5 japanese 're not samurai class in the past probably, they could'nt know how to fight.Algren has been skilled to kill a man at the Civil War on the other.Besides,he's been well skilled in using sword for one year esp in mental aspect. So he could feel 5 japanese every moving, their feet movings, their breathing and so on.He must have felt he cold do that at very first.and after that,he was surprised at himself that he could.

  • Great movie,great actor

    5 stars!

  • I love this movie!

  • cool

  • This would've been more realistic if tom cruise was killed

  • No, it wouldn't. The fight choreography here was superb and made the scene totally realistic.

  • OH blah blah blah, I love this movie, but those guys have probably all been training with the sword their whole life, Ulgren had like a year at the most.

  • Less than a year. So, what's your point?

  • What do you mean what's my point? Can you not infer from my post what I mean? They would have slaughtered him. How is it that he has the skill to beat them?

  • Why wouldn't he? Or, better still, why couldn't he have the skill to beat them? He's already a skilled fighter, learns from samurai, embraced their way of life, and also, as the film shows, has the inate ability to anticapate moves.

  • Quick learning.

  • Yup. Alot easier if fighting/killing is what you do for a living.

  • Katana blades are hands down the coolest swords ever!

  • no.they are the coolest weapons ever, all catagories!

  • Swords are pretty badass all together.

  • ...........cool

  • lol it took him 28 secs to slice 4 of them dead

  • No You are wrong...

He was ready to die with them, was ready to die for them. This fact made he feel the way of the samurai.... It's enough....

  • Ace duude

  • People you need to know,we are all humans and we are all same...peace!

  • If Tom Cruise's character was a Samurai, then he would've killed himself alongside Ken Watanabe's character at the end. He was just referred to as "The American".

  • I'm sure he would have, but someone had to pass his message to the Meiji Emperor.

  • It's more b/c of the fact that he isn't a samurai at all.

  • I dunno, they may have seen him as an American, but the moment he was willing to save Ken's character after this clip, He became allied to his cause, and became a samurai. He was willing to give his life to the Emperor, after all.

  • Yeah, but he still saw himself as an outsider. He may have embraced many aspects of the samurai way of life but I'm sure some things would take time for him to accept.

  • Oh, no doubt. I do believe he would have given his life for the cause though, and would eventually be known as a strong samurai. If the movie continued, that is.

  • First time I saw this in the theater, just one line came to mind before the beheading...

    "There can be only one!"

  • so did i ... =)

  • The music in this film is moving. Awesome film. One of my favourite Tom Cruise perfomrances =)

  • woow

  • Love this scene.

  • Just leaving a quick thanks. I have this on VHS (I forget what TV station had it on), but at the moment, I don't have easy access to a VHS player.

I am doing a paper on production techniques (audio and visual namely) that were used in this scene for a 200 level college class.

  • I love this film, but some scenes in it are very silly.

  • Lol cmon people at the end of the day it is just a film

  • i dont thing he can really fight with 5 japanese

  • best head cut ever so fast and clean :D

  • this movie is awesome, the only downside in it is tom cruise. it just annoys me how hes the last samurai and has no experience compared to the others who have their whole life of experience. he loves himself too much

  • Come on people! HE ISN'T THE LAST SAMURAI! Think for a second, Katsumoto is the Last Samurai, Cruise's character never was a Samurai, he just lives with them. xp

  • I think Samurai is used in the plural sense rather than a single character

  • my impression of the title was the same as chomp's

  • Would never learn the skill needed so quickly, movie or no movie its wrong!!

  • i saw that movie it's good

  • whole figght lasted exactly 24 seconds.......minus the last decapitation

  • It is a bit hard to believe that a foreigner in Japan who is already trained in one style of combat can learn a new method of swordfighting with a different class and type of sword in several months and then be better than men who have trained their whole lives in the art.

  • you didnt understand what happened then....

it s not about the skill but the instinct he got in katsumoto village...

besides. may be the other guys sucked...

  • True that, there is the whole mind over matter thing. Also, the other guys were trying to destroy the samurai tradition, so why would they be awesome swordfighters? I do love how Tom Cruise reviews the fight afterwards and realises the last guy is still alive, disarms and then beheads him.

  • vjonice

  • OMG your right!!!

  • LOL 1:29 SEX HAIR!!!!!

  • Thats the guy jumping on oprah's Couch!! haha

  • thats fuckin syk at the ending..and i love how it goes slow motion

  • ok, but babies and adults are not the same when it comes to learning a new language. they're like sponges; they absorb everything, good and bad. this is just fiction. nobody can learn an entire language in one year (not to take away from the movie, though). whatever, still a great movie imo.

  • I saw that film a long time ago, but I think he already knew how to speak japanese... as he was hired to command a japanese army etc

  • Its easy to learn a new language in a year, if you live among people who speak it (from personal experience).

  • how long was Cruise a prisoner of the samurai? if the answer is one year, how the hell did he learn to speak japanese in one year?

  • well i heard that if you live in a country where no one knows english and you are only able to listen you soon start to understand it it's kinda like when small children/ babies learn to speak

  • cause japanese is not difficult to learn, is difficult to write. And also, Algren was able to learn Sioux language, so that means he has the skill for it xD

  • its only FOUR opponents

  • no1 got the full movie on youtube :( if any1 know any got it say it to me please:)

  • no1 got the full movie on youtube :( if any1 know any gotit say it to me please:)

  • security breach

  • pwned.....thats all there is to say

  • did mr. Cruise do his own sword stunts?

  • Yeah he did pretty good

  • yes.

  • can't believe cruise pwned em

  • Best damn movie ever!

  • japanese people needa chill out
