2. There was nothing to suggest that these assassins were samurai. Sword doesn't samurai make.
3. Fighting skill really has nothing to do with nationality. The guy who has fought most or trained best usually wins, regardless.
Omura, the Japanese fellow in charge of the modernized Japanese military, orders his men to kill Algren (Cruise) if he attempts to warn Katsumoto, the leader of the samurai, of the impending attack upon the samurai and of the assassination of Katsumoto.
In this scene, Algren is on his way to the quarters of Katsumoto to warn him of the events mentioned earlier when he is ambushed.

It is a bit hard to believe that a foreigner in Japan who is already trained in one style of combat can learn a new method of swordfighting with a different class and type of sword in several months and then be better than men who have trained their whole lives in the art.

I dunno, they may have seen him as an American, but the moment he was willing to save Ken's character after this clip, He became allied to his cause, and became a samurai. He was willing to give his life to the Emperor, after all.

Yeah, but he still saw himself as an outsider. He may have embraced many aspects of the samurai way of life but I'm sure some things would take time for him to accept.

this movie is awesome, the only downside in it is tom cruise. it just annoys me how hes the last samurai and has no experience compared to the others who have their whole life of experience. he loves himself too much

It is a bit hard to believe that a foreigner in Japan who is already trained in one style of combat can learn a new method of swordfighting with a different class and type of sword in several months and then be better than men who have trained their whole lives in the art.

True that, there is the whole mind over matter thing. Also, the other guys were trying to destroy the samurai tradition, so why would they be awesome swordfighters? I do love how Tom Cruise reviews the fight afterwards and realises the last guy is still alive, disarms and then beheads him.

ok, but babies and adults are not the same when it comes to learning a new language. they're like sponges; they absorb everything, good and bad. this is just fiction. nobody can learn an entire language in one year (not to take away from the movie, though). whatever, still a great movie imo.
