  • He is simply incredible.

  • i dont understand quite well his english what the host is saying when the video starts ??

  • Oh, I'm so high! Beyond, beyond....

  • This version is amazing, beatiful and gorgeous. Don't hate me, but I prefer this arrangement over the original. Sorry.

  • Please, don't call Pablo to Pau Casals. This is a big injury for us. We are catalan, not spanish. Catalonia is a diferent country that Spain.

  • Beautiful. Words cannot describe

  • Very catalan people think in this: Is Pau, and not Pablo ( Pau is in catalan, and Pablo is in spanish)

And other perople thinks this is not important, but for the catalan people is very important...

For Catalan people is very important to mark differentiate between the culture and the Catalan language, of the culture and the language of Spain.

Therefore we ask that it was considered as Pau and no as Pablo.

  • siusplau corregeix l'error! please correct the mistake: PAU casals, not Pablo! this error is a disgrace to his person and to the nation of catalonia!!

  • In response to the h4t3rz, I actually quite like this version.

  • I pray never, never to tire from listening to this soul-reaching song. So many interpretations; all of them beuatifully done!

Thank you; whoever and all that made it posssible.

  • Please, some respect to the Master, his name is PAU, not PABLO nor PAUL.

PAU also means PEACE in Catalan, his native and only language.

  • Please respect to the Master, his name is PAU, not PABLO nor PAUL. Pau also means PEACE in his (mine) native language, Catalan.

  • Please respect to the Master, his name is PAU, not PABLO nor PAUL. Pau also means PEACE in his (mine) native language, Catalan.

  • Please respect to the Master, his name is PAU, not PABLO nor PAUL. Pau also means PEACE in his (mine) native language, Catalan.

  • isserlis is playing so beautiful. as far as i know, this piece is usually accompanied by a orchestera or a piano, at least. isserlis lets the song sound like it is meant to be a solo piece and that is just amazing. and to all guys saying he should play more "like casals"...you've never heard the word "artistic freedom", haven't you? i'm pretty sure casals wouldn't mind isserlis playing like that.

  • whoooooooooaaaa the reverb is making me seasick....MAN OVERBOARD!!!

  • He destroyed the song by playing it at his own way. Pau played it a million times better.

  • @nixxxon18 What's the point of Isserlis palying it if he's not going to play it the Isserlis way?

  • @Bumblybee256 well what i meant is, he played it terrible. You can play it at your own way but not destroy it, but he did.

  • @nixxxon18 And I suppose you could teach him a thing or two, eh?

  • @Bumblybee256 yup - do not change the song so much like he did, it sounds too different and play it more like Casals... im no cello expert but those weird interruptions on the notes are killing it

  • @nixxxon18 That's what musicians do, they put their own stamp on music. If you only like replicas then only listen to original versions.

  • @nixxxon18 I think that once you are one of the best cellist on earth, you can play any song you like, the way you like it, and i doubt that you are in a position to teach steven isserlis how to play cello, or tell him he played this song bad, he didnt play it bad, he played a version you don't like, it's not the same.

Would you say rostropovich destroyed bach's prelude no1 because he liked to play it wat faster then the original version is? I don't think so.

  • @TehStupidBish One thing is speeding it up like Rostropovich did, and another is actually changing the original song, destroying it, like this guy isserlis did. Just because your a good cellist doesnt mean you are going to do everything right, and doesnt mean you'll never gonna make mistakes.

  • Beautifully played. Bravo!

  • Everybody, I have seen dawg00000 be a troll on countless videos. He does it to be annoying, he is a loser, so ignore him.

  • pablo casals??? is PAU casals!!

  • @unnoulopez

During his professional career he was known as Pablo Casals. Therefore he released his music and performed and wrote under the name Pablo Casals. With music he is Pablo. Get over it.

  • cultural division language division

this video is about music cello

    Is not about catalan grammatic

by the way Pau in protugues means dick so what ?

  • @Extralander: So what, suck my PAU, you asshole, and tell me how anything cultural can means divisional. you prick.

  • I met him ^^; So nice/amazing.

  • This song called "el cant dels ocells", was for the catalan people like a song for the freedom, was during the spanish civil war, when the spanish fascists were killing catalan people and Pau Casals, that was already in Prada ( North catalonia ), he was finishing his concerts always with this folk song, thinking about his culture, language...

  • Beautiful :)

  • y does he keep throwing the random trills and double stops in? it just ruins it.

  • for god's sakes lets apreciate this beautiful music rather turn this into a debate over A NAME FOR GOD's SAKES

Pau or Pablo Casals was a Catalonian Cellist from Spain. Catalonia hasn't broken off of Spain yet so he is a Spanish Cellist. IT DOESNT MATTER. HOW ABOUT WE CALL HIM A EUROPEAN CELLIST THEN. Im tired of Political Correctness

I CAN CALL HIM Paul if i wanted to. They are different ways of saying the same thing.

Culture Shock. He was a Catalonian Spanish Cellist.

  • @iWyke2, We should call him Pauly. Pauly Cas.

euro classical is immature music anyway--hip-hop has subtlety and beats and rhythm and the ears of most of the the young people around the world. It will live after moribund euro classical is long, long gone.

  • @dawg00000 Did you really just argue that western classical music lacks subtlety and maturity after watching that breathtaking performance? I feel sorry for you, really

  • @dbpsoccer121, I wish pauly would play hip hop. pauly's performance has all the depth and gravitas of a titanic fart by Muhammad (SAAW) into Allah's face.

  • @dbpsoccer121, euro classical doesn't lack subtlety and maturity per se; it merely lacks it in comparison to the depth and profundity of hip-hop as reflected by the titanic brilliance of artists of Color.

  • @dawg00000 @dawg00000 Stop. You are forever saying about 'artists of colour', which emphasises a racial split; we are all people, it need not matter the colour of your skin or your beliefs. You may be a supremacist of some sort, but the rest of us aren't.

  • @Candlegary, I'm not a supremicist. I just want the euro classical fetishists (not you of course) to admit that euro classical is moribund and that hip-hop will now dominate for the next few hundred years through persuasion, as euro classical dominated through imperialism. Pauly Cas's cello music has sung its nearly last note.

  • @iWyke2 I really apreciate your effort of being politically correct, but Pau Casals was a lot more of what you can imagine...I think you can't really understand what he ment for Catalonia, so please, be respectful, and if you have some free time, read something about him, and you'll probably understand a bit more what people expresses about him...

  • how the shit could anybody dislike this, let alone 48?

  • Anyways i still didn't understand why do you invite separatism in this party, probably cause you are such a motherfucking spanish national-socialist that still thinks that franco is alive, even he died 40 years ago. If a girl is called Laia (catalan name) how are you gonna translate it in spanish? Oh wait, there's no laia's translation, fuck you and your stupidity.

  • @Bala666 You are exposing your pride and your stupidity. I agree that his name was Pau, but you are talking about a Spanish problem that no one cares about outside of Catalunia, instead of talking about this wonderful music.

  • @KABRIS1 You are the first one that started writting about separatism and i only talked about the name of Pau, idiot

What a jerk... you don't even know what u just had wrote haha.

  • @Bala666 I'm not meaning to insult you but your comments are very ignorant and silly. Has anyone ever told you that you are a very stupid person?

  • @lewars1912 Ignorant? Oh boy, go back to scotland then go know its history, give 2 walks inside your house then get out, and then and only then talk about other's homes. Like the chinease proverb.

    OWNED.

  • @Bala666 >Come again?

  • The rest of the world does not care about Catalan nationalism and whether Pablo's name is Pablo or Pau. I know that it is, "Pau" in Catalan, but most of the world knows the man as, "Pablo Casals".

Steven Isserlis is a wonderful player. Why aren't there more comments about who is playing in this video?

  • PAU is catalan, PABLO is castilian. He is catalan.

  • Pau Casals, not Pablo!

interesting interpretation . . . but its only an interpretation :-)

  • sorprendente!!!!

  • Thanks @marielatricio, your recomendation was great.... ALEJANDRO ALDONZA's version is marvelous

  • This is a beautiful catalan traditional Christmas song (also sung as a lullaby) whose origin is unknown. In Catalonia this song is often played in public institutions and football clubs when some person close to them has passed away. The youtube's link below shows a performance in F.C. Barcelona's stadium, before playing a match:

    watch?v=KW8XKgibwts

  • It's a very good version but I miss something that I've only found listening to Pau Casals.

  • Bello.

  • I love this son and I love Steven, also I love the words from the popular song. If you love that music check ALEJANDRO ALDONZA's version... great

  • Is Pau Casals, not Pablo. But it isn't an important thing for say ignorants to english people. He didn't likes this. Pau casals never died in the soul of the catalan people.

Freedom for the thousand years old country. Freedom for an old nation. Freedom for Catalonia and his people. SII*II

  • @porelveranomariano at least get your English correct before calling anyone ignorant...

  • Beautiful music. Ugly comments.

  • Comment removed

  • @dicenkomos you're an idiot...

  • @Keytaster You can insult me, but I know a lot of this song, and everybody can have an opinion, and if you are so eccentric that you don't accept opinions and you insult people that you don't know you have a problem...

  • @dicenkomos It's not an opinion to say that he plays like a child... that's just pure nonsense, face it.

  • Saying Pablo Casals is offending all the catalan culture. It's Pau Casals. If you are called Henry i'm not gona call you Enrique, is the same you english ignorants.

  • @Bala666 uhh i've seen Prince William referred to as Guillermo many times in spanish newspapers... but I do understand how offending it is.

  • @Bala666 The world knows him as Pablo. Please leave Spanish Seperatism in Spain and concentrate on the music and the person on this video. Studies in Spain have proved that a baby cannot even distinguish the difference between Catalan and Castellano. The languages are not as different as you think they are.

  • @KABRIS1 Separatism? The world knows?Ok then the world knows shit. Probably a baby can distinguish the morons like you aswel..that doesn't even know how to write properly in spanish nor english. If you are called Enrique and people call you Henry, is it correct? You are disrespecting Pau's parents for giving him that name. Is a typical and common mistake from spaniards to comparate everything with themselves and think that his own is the right one, please grow up and leave the black spain behind

  • This version is just great, it brings me some memories about my childhood in this incredible and memorable land, CATALUNYA:

I ask all people from around the world that when you come to Catalunya just enjoy our small but beatiful country and think about our land as if it was a bit yours as well.

  • Thanks Emmarose Your recomendation is great. ALEJANDRO ALDONZA is marvelous

  • Please, his name is Pau Casals!

    Don't translate de names, please

It's the same like Pau Gasol, not "Pablo Gasol"

    Thank you

  • wonderful chelo interpretation, if you wont to ear a incredible voice version of this song, look for Alejandro Aldonza el cant dells ocells.. he is out standing and beautiful to... jajaja

  • precios

  • Can't you just understand that Pau Casals was a Catalan and Spanish cellist?

Btw, don't say Pablo Casals because his name was Pau... just honor his figure.

  • he was just catalan, don't make a mistake.

  • A beautiful rendition... apart from those surprise!low notes he keeps playing. It just kinda sounds like his hand keeps slipping.

Still, other than that it's very heartfelt and poignant.

  • anyone know where i could find casals actually playing this piece?

  • Whaaat!!!!!!!!!??

This song is called ''el cant dels ocells'' and is not made by PAU Casals, is a tradicional song of Catalonia.

    stupid ¬¬

  • ur stupid because they said it was made famous by pau casals not that he made it douche

  • the host did say it's a Catalonia folk song..

  • I didn't say it for the host.

  • Pau casals was a catalan fighter against spain.

And the real name of this song is "el cant dels ocells".

    Freedom for Catalonia!

  • pau casals was a Spanish cellist not a catalan fighter dumbass. check out his name on wikipedia

  • Violakid...listen, I'm catalan, and here we know much more about Pau Casals than what exists on the english wikipedia.

So, I suggest you to find out a bit more about him, otherwise, shut up.

    FREEDOM FOR CATALONIA.

  • oh please wtf Freedom for catalonia no one gives two damns

  • Also he wasnt a fighter we was a catalan and spanish cellist

  • hahahahahhahahahha

    Pau = catalan name

    Pablo = spanish name

you just need this to understand it

  • @fortvesper Catalan Fighter??

    Tu eres tonto.

  • Mesmirising :)

  • It is impressive, but I would ask for respect for master Pau Casals. He asked during his whole life to be called PAU, because that was his name (not pablo), and because it means PEACE in catalan. Please, consider this and, therefore, change the info of the video

  • @Cibergoya You know how ridiculous it is to discuss his name all the time?

It's just annoying and a matter of language. In German (e.g.) PAU does NOT exist. And on all his concert posters or programmes as a professional musician he was PABLO.

In my oppinion it's really not improtant whether you call him Pau or Pablo, what counts is his music. And to be honest I don't think that he would agree with the PAU-fanatics, for who it's more important to discuss his name than to listen to his music.

    STOP

  • @Ronaldoshitsonmessi I respect your theories and arguments, but you should know how he suffered for deffending Catalonia. It is not a catalan culture vs music debate. We love his music. It is about honoring his memory.

  • @Ronaldoshitsonmessi I respect your theories and arguments, but you should know how he suffered for deffending Catalonia. It is not a catalan culture vs music debate. We love his music. It is about honoring his memory.

  • Met him :D

  • i think thats the most beautiful cello i ever saw

  • He's amazing, he's signed my hand and my programme. he was taught by my cello teachers teacher and is a truly lovely man!

  • Bravo, maestro Isserlis, BRAVO!!!

  • i want to become his student of cello i like the cellist

  • Really beautiful playing, this guy is fantastic. c:

  • lo importante es: Él como quería que le conocieran?

  • For those that don't read Spanish I just wish to say how sad it is that the comments made recently relating to this video have degenerated totally from the selfless love shown to music by both Casals-Isserlis. I was too young to have have known Casals though I have read several biographies, and barely know Isserlis, but I'm sure that both good men would hate the absolutely pointless comments made in Spanish these past couple of months. Let's have stricter monitoring of what is allowed to pass by

  • Wonderful playing.

  • I think he is playing the same cello from the video with Emmanuel Feuermann, only it is over sixty years later.

  • Steven Isserlis is GOD-LIKE

  • is PAU casals no PABLO casals!!!!

  • ¿No?

  • Yes, he was known as Pablo but as the years went by he grew more attached to the Catalan dialect and so it meant alot to him to be known by his Catalonian name. He even wrote a mass "El Pesebre" in Catalan. Long live his memory! Great musician and statesman and peace-maker Pau Casals!

  • thanks for the comment but catalan is a language not a dialect. ^^

    adéu=bye

  • Oops! I meant language, not dialect.

I wish you guys/gals would lighten up!

  • Another curious fact is that "Pau" in Catalan language, not only means "Paul", but also means "Peace".

A great pacifist like he only could be called with that name.

  • Don't translate names!

  • Uauuu queroo tocar assim também !

    Belissima

  • Why is no one interested in the music..this guy's name is Steven Isserlis and he plays beautifully

  • anyone have or know where i can get this sheet music?

  • where u would get any music from. either a local store, Shar music, or online...

  • Check sally beamish at Scottish Music Centre.

  • visca catalunya!!

    visca el Pau Casalsssss!!!

    freedom cataloniaaaa!

  • Saw this guy live and it was unbelievable. One of the best tones I've heard for a living cellist next to clive greensmith in tokyo.

  • If it were writted in spanish, I could understand that you write Pablo. But, it's writted in english...Why Pablo? His name is Pau, and I think that if you translate Pau to english the result is not Pablo... Isn't it?

  • There's also another new solo cello version in the 'original' A minor key - a subtle 'virtuoso' version available as a free download from the johnstone-music site under Cello ...

  • He does good but nobody plays EL CANT DELS OCELLS like the great PAU CASALS

    (Don't translate names!)

  • The verytable name of his man is: Pau Casals.

Is a music from CATALUNYA (todoy province of Spain)

    Freedom Catalunya!!

  • Pau is not Pablo!

Instead of where he's from, you've to respect his name! He wouldn't be happy to see that ppl is translating his name into castilian!

He always defended Catalonia, and loved it!

I'm tired to see the name Pablo Casals...

  • Is catalan, no spanish, hes name so, no is pablo, is Pau Casals!

  • Its beautiful...

    whatever its called!

I had the cd of Isserlis's Bach cello suits, which had this song in it, but it was scratched when I went overseas and doesn't work anymore.

thank heavens youtube has this piece on it!

it's one of my absolute favorites!!

  • Why are you concentrating on the trivial stuff?

I mean, you have a great cellist (Steven Isserlis) playing a wonderful piece of art.

Does it matter if you add a "B" to a name?

He is still the same person, with or without the "B".

Enjoy the music; don't frett about a name!

  • @reid210192 There's no trivial stuff, this song represents the catalan popular culture, not the spanish one. Pau was called Pau, and not Pablo. Like Enrique was called Enrique and not Henry. If you want to be an ignorant, it's ok for you, but don't mix me in your stupidity.

  • @reid210192 you´re right, I love Estevan Isserlis too. ;D

    Freedom for Catalonia!!!

  • Pablo is the mainstream version of his name, I'm afraid! I put Pau on all of my cds and music tho:)

  • but his name continued being Pau anyway

  • Please explain your comment, or don't leave one like that. What about calling attention to the fact that 'war on terror' is a political buzz-phrase makes him a pig?

  • the artist chose the same piece for the bis in İstanbul 2 days ago, he is devoted and fully in "the feeling", not quite british

  • El seu nom es PAU CASALS no PABLO CASALS

HIS NAME IS PAU CASALS, NOT PABLO CASALS.

He is catalan, and his name is in catalan, not in spanish.

  • Rovira- the popular world knows him as Pablo. Educated people know better. Pau.

  • We played this song, with our Orchestra in the church "Sagrada di familia"

It is such a beautiful song!!!

  • Ugly reverb effect...

    But nice playing nonetheless !

  • Music is the real subject; you're right. What I love about Isserlis, is that for him, the music is always the subject. This is a delightful piece plain and simple, and to hear it played so well is wonderful.

  • Does anybody mind to talk about music instead of making a politic campaigne for Catalans? I like you people, but man, your commentaries about this wonderful video just suck...

    Many thanks to Steven Isserlis.

  • Dear Santa, all I want for Christmas is more Steven Isserlis videos on Youtube..... Here I am again - listening to and admiring this amazing cellist. Incredibly talented, yes, beautiful tone, yes, but perhaps what makes him so very special is his sincerity and devotion to music itself. There's so much beauty in that for me.

  • Pau Casals did not "compose" this piece - it was written in the 16th or 17th century - but Casals did "arrange" it for cello and played it often, thus it became known as his piece. There is an English translation of the original folk song about songbirds heralding the birth of Christ. I would sing it at church when I was a child (um, 40 years ago). It is an absolutely beautiful piece, the music and the lyrics.

  • It's sooo fucking beautiful man !! can somebody pass me some fucking tissues ??

  • Pablo casals? Song of the birds? what the fuck is that. It's Pau casals and "El Cant dels ocells" this song means the great honor of being CATALAN, the most precious symbol of the fight of catalonia versus the fascism of the civil war in spain.

  • Oh please, Song of the birds... don't translate the name, Pau Casals wouldn't like it!

  • wOBDERFUL! But it's not "Pablo Casals", he was named PAU CASALS!

  • Haha, you would know better than anyone else. btw, you don't really hint hint

  • This lovely little gem is on Steven's new release of the Bach Cello Suites (in it's entirety). The whole CD will lift you out of your chair it's so beautiful.

  • This song is not from Pau Casals. This is a traditional catalan folksong and he have played always this song but ,actually, this song is from 16th century. Casals doesn't compose it.

    Great performance.

  • he never says anything about casals composing...

  • Duda_Star - Vídeo Music. Please to comment , to evaluate

  • It's just fine not to like someone's playing, but this comment only makes you look jealous, ill-bred, ugly, and I might as well add, low. I'm sorry for you.

  • i agree w/ u

  • wonderful

    very atmospheric

  • Simplement genial, un cant a l'enllorança! Song of the birds, composed by Pau Casal, amazing! xD

  • This song is from Pau Casals, catalan... Everybody should know it...

  • we're playing this song in orchestra

  • beautiful, simply beautiful...

  • A very fine performance from Steven Isserlis...and a rather haunting piece...I love it. Thank you.
