Oh my gosh... thank you! Finally, I haven't exactly been searching for it, but there seems to be no one in my general area that agrees that that phrase is just plain wrong in the Pledge of Allegiance. I don't go so far as to walk out of the room during the pledge but I at least make sure that I leave out 'under god' when we are (pretty much) forced to do it before school every day.
I'm in Wisconsin... but when I say no one "in my general area," I mean the people in my stuffy conservative private school. People don't seem to have a big problem with my not saying it, but I know it bothers them when I bring it up in conversation. Most of the kids in my grade disagree on me with things like this because their parents do... it's actually sad more than anything.
Thats nice! i'm actually not an american citizen and i've been told to stand up or take my hat off during it which is completely ridiculous! i think the problem in america is the fact that people wrap themselves up in the flag!
If these kids are sincere about really making a change, there are elected officials to whom they can correspond with. Since their parents probably elected these officials (or possibly contributed to their campaigns, since Boulder is quite a wealthy city) their parents can argue on their behalf until they reach 18. It is not like they do not have a voice, if they were united, they could get their parents to hire a lawyer to take this issue up the "chain" in the court system.
Do you not think I regularly write to John Carter, John Cornyn, Kay Hutchison and other Texas representatives? All the time and I get letters that say thanks but we are going to do what we want to do. Seriously that's the wording summarized. A voice is useless unless your politician thinks you are in the majority and he may lose the next election. I suggest you look up David Wallace Croft blog and see what happens when lawyers are hired. It takes years for resolution.
Satire...tooth fairy? Now, that is kinda being silly but ok. Lets face it, the only way "under god" will get removed is if the Chief Justices put it to a vote and declare it "unconstitutional." Maybe they might, maybe they wont. Barring that, students and anyone in general do not have to stand for, or recite the pledge if they don't agree with it since that is their right.
Yes, it is silly but perfect analogy, god or the tooth fairy. Or they can babble while it's being played, that too is a right but I agree we don't have to stand or recite it.
Good for you that you go to boulder HS, i'm sure that you have more at your disposal than I ever did. Its good to see you all making the most out of it by skipping class instead of doing that OUTSIDE of the classroom. Good Job.
The nature of the protest was also timing in that the school was taking time to recite a religious pledge so they timed it just right. When I go to city council meetings to make my voice heard I go when they are having a meeting and welcoming residents. That's good timing.
"Offensive" part of our government? Ok, its cool that you all feel that way. However, there are those who have the opinion that this nation was FOUNDED by people SEEKING religious freedom. Now, it isn't like the USA is a theocracy and you don't see "GOD" anywhere in the Constitution or the Bill of Rights. It is fine that some don't believe in god, but does "under god" really oppress anyone? It is not like "religion" is being forced on anyone.
Most people do think the US was founded by people who saw what happens when you favor religion in government, Europe. Putting god in the pledge gives the mythical being more status than the tooth fairy. Why not one nation under the tooth fairy? Same thing but because people think god will send them to heaven for submitting then god in our gov't is ok by many theists when it really is a constitutional violation favoring religion.
Lets be realistic...those kids just want to "challenge" authority because its "chic" to act "adult." Also, the only reason that people protested is because they got a reason to get out of class (like you wouldnt go if you were a 15 year old). Besides, what does a 15 year old know about the constitution compared to a Chief Justice. Personally, I trust the CJ's oh...50 years of experience...
Then wouldn't almost all of the kids have walked out if it was a rebellious maneuver? I'm sure the 15 year old kids who walked out realized we are not a nation under god or at least we shouldn't have to pledge we are.
Maybe most of the kids did not join because they honestly don't believe in the political stance taken by these kids. If people do not like the "pledge" due to the "under god" part, all they have to do is simply not recite it then. Just like those kids have their beliefs in not being "one nation under god," there are those who do believe in "one nation under god."
And if we remove the words it will be returned to the secular pledge. If we want to change it to one nation under no gods then that would be fine too. I'm kidding on that, I think secular is fair for all.
wow, yeah, this is another problem, people complain that us kids don't take part in the democratic process enough by way of voting but when we walk out of class to protest an offensive part of our government which we feel strongly about, you say we're just skipping class. that's pathetic. FYI, I go to Boulder High and I would have walked out had my teacher not restricted my class from doing so.
So...you are 21 according to your profile. So, I take it you are part of the Special Education program then? Seriously, do not pull this sort of stuff like saying you are a "student" of Boulder High School when your profile would lead most to say you are full of it. If you WERE a student of boulder HS, then that is something else. Please, we have enough of people in the media "lying" about who and what they are.
The pledge of allegiance is a mini religious ceremony. I don't mind saying it to be courteous. Nobody should be required to say it, and should walk out if that is the case.
Frankly I think coercing student to recite what, in my not particular humble opinion, amount to a loyalty oath, regardless of any religious crap someone adds to it, is oppressive in and of itself. So, I'm not one of those people who wants to take "under God" out of the Pledge. I want the whole damn thing shredded and burned. But hey, I am glad those kids took a stand.
