U.S. AND UK AVIATION SOOOO DIFFERENT!!! WE DO RUNWAY INSPECTIONS AT ABOUT 50 TO 90 MILES AN HOUR DEPENDING ON THE AIRPORT, THERE ACTUALLY WALKING, UNBELIEVABLE!!! IN THE U.S. THEY WOULD HAVE BEEN RUN OVER BY AN A380 ALREADY!!!! AND WE USE SOME TYPE OF AMERICAN BULL CRAP, THEY DRIVE LAND ROVERS!!!!
Is it really necessary to have 5 Range Rovers crawl alongside the inspectors? Wouldn't one be more than sufficient to transport all of them after the job's done? It's a rather obvious and simple-to-implement measure for some governmental savings....
I think the lights were probably put on for the inspection to make sure all were working. Even though nothing was flying, you still have to check to make sure all was OK, and now it seems that flights are going resume at some stage, so everything has to be ready I suppose.
The lights are probably just procedure...otherwise they'd be called into their supervisors room...

@maliksaadat410 I wouldn't necessarily say that checking a runway during an ash cloud crisis is a job best done quickly ; )

@obliviate999 Heathrow is owned by BAA, a plc, not the government. And the 5 Range Rovers made for a good photo op. Nice video.
