We reached peak oil supply in 2004 as Indonesia and Malaysia dropped out of OPEC (soon to be followed by the Saudis and Mexico as their oil fields are running dry). At the same time demand for oil is skyrocketing as China, India, and Brazil are developing at an amazing rate. The fact that so many things are dependent on oil prices as you say is the exact reason we need to have a MUCH more diversified energy portfolio!!

@nickj077 You are exactly right. And one side effect of mass transit will be oil companies being forced to raise prices to subsidize for their losses. Did he not do his research? Apparently not because Germany has a great mass transit system and as of March, 2008 (around the same time this speech was given) their price at the pump was about $8/gallon (MSN worldblog). It seems like Obama rarely looks at history as indicators of what could happen here if we implement his socialist ideas.
Also, the idea of mass transit shouldn't be too foreign to us. Before reagan deregulated interstate trucking, everything was shipped by train. I would argue that we would see a shift back to trains, due to the high gas prices of $4.00+ a gallon, but the infrastructure is essentially rotting, due to unuse. that combined with the amount of money invested in a large trucking force means that they probably aren't even thinking of the alternative.

Well, if you were listening to the end of the segment, he was talking about a 60 billion plan to invest in our infrastructure. This would be taken away from what's spent in Iraq. As of today, we're spending approximately 341 million dollars per day on Iraq, so it'd only be half a year of the same rate of spending before we reached that mark.
Oh yeah. Also, that plan is to be invested in new infrastructure, but really, I'm sure that a lot of that is to be invested in repairing what's currently falling apart. Remember Minneapolis?

Really, it's just a sense of scale. Like Paris, NYC does have an underground subway, but unlike France, we don't have a cross country high speed rail (ie france's TGV). That is feasible and would save time/money
I'm not opposed to mass transit where it's cost effective. However, even Amtrack isn't cost effective, and it connects Boston/NYC/Philly/DC...four cities with very high population densities and where there's a huge amount of daily commuting between the cities. And it STILL can't pay for itself. Taxpayers shell out billions/yr to subsidize Amtrack. I'm afraid Dems will create many Amtrack-like solutions which will cost us far more in the long run than what we have now.
true that... but really amtrak has two things going against it. Culture and effectiveness. The first issue we need to overcome is our tie to our 'indepence', which is almost laughable these days to do gas prices. Secondly, the other issue with amtrak is that it's rather a pointless service at this point in time. It's costly, it's slow, and it's got a lot of lay over time. My roommate was taking a four hour ride back (about as fast as a car) to home, and waited for six hours at a stop.
I think the tie to independence will be overcome once we have an effective system in place. amtrak is not effective. Again, it's slow and costly. If we developed a bullet train that's faster than/as fast as taking a plane, and cheaper, there won't be as much opposition to running around on a train. The initial hump will be to reinvest and update a crumbling infrastructure, but I don't think that it will ultimately have the same issues as amtrak.
I agree on the culture issue. Actually, my preference would be a bi-partisan commission to take a hard look at alternative energy resources as well as how energy is used (transportation, manufacturing, home heating, etc.). Everything should be on the table at this point. I'd be very open to radical ideas as long as I'm convinced it's free of partisanship and as long as it's cost effective over the long run.
I can agree to that, but honestly, I think Obama is above partisan politics. I get the sense that this isn't just a talking point for him, but a solution to a rising issue.
Bi-partisan or not, honesty in politics is dwindling as lobbying increases. My main attraction to Obama is that he isn't bound by lobbyists. He rebukes corporate offers and looks to the people. If we can get the other politicians to do the same, we should be golden.

@Skrzynski65 Gas prices are going up whether you like it or not. We reached peak oil supply in 2004 as Indonesia and Malaysia dropped out of OPEC (soon to be followed by the Saudis and Mexico as their oil fields are running dry). At the same time demand for oil is skyrocketing as China, India, and Brazil are developing at an amazing rate. The fact that so many things are dependent on oil prices as you say is the exact reason we need to have a MUCH more diversified energy portfolio!!

@nickj077 You are exactly right. And one side effect of mass transit will be oil companies being forced to raise prices to subsidize for their losses. Did he not do his research? Apparently not because Germany has a great mass transit system and as of March, 2008 (around the same time this speech was given) their price at the pump was about $8/gallon (MSN worldblog). It seems like Obama rarely looks at history as indicators of what could happen here if we implement his socialist ideas.

Also, the idea of mass transit shouldn't be too foreign to us. Before reagan deregulated interstate trucking, everything was shipped by train. I would argue that we would see a shift back to trains, due to the high gas prices of $4.00+ a gallon, but the infrastructure is essentially rotting, due to unuse. that combined with the amount of money invested in a large trucking force means that they probably aren't even thinking of the alternative.

The US dollar is world reserve currency, the price of oil reflects the amount of US script in the "fiat money" system. US g-crudes haven't published M3 (amount of currency circulating since 2006) Just turn off the fricken printing presses, and watch the price of oil go down. Well, if you were listening to the end of the segment, he was talking about a 60 billion plan to invest in our infrastructure. This would be taken away from what's spent in Iraq. As of today, we're spending approximately 341 million dollars per day on Iraq, so it'd only be half a year of the same rate of spending before we reached that mark.

Wait a minute now. I thought BO's plan was to get us out of Iraq, and use those dollars to balance the budget (remember the record deficits the Dems are having a hissy about?). The problem with Dems is they have all manner of programs that sound just dandy on paper, but have no practical way of paying for them. And, when we finally get those programs they cost far more than promised and rarely deliver on all the hype. BO will have to make tough choices, but damned if I know which he'll choose.

Wtf is he talking about? Mass transit? Any fucking idea what the population density is in Europe compared to the US? There's no comparison at all. We DO have mass transit in our cities where population density makes it cost effective. Yeah, lets have trains connecting Kansas City and Dubuque...just get rid of the highways. This mass transit bullshit has been a liberal sacred cow for yrs. Didn't make sense then and doesn't now.

Really, it's just a sense of scale. Like Paris, NYC does have an underground subway, but unlike France, we don't have a cross country high speed rail (ie france's TGV). Of course it would be foolish to have mass transit connecting the entirity of our country, as the size of the US is larger than several EU countries when put together, but the fact is that he was talking about regional mass transit. ie... connecting the major cities of the upper midwest. That is feasible and would save time/money

I'm not opposed to mass transit where it's cost effective. However, even Amtrack isn't cost effective, and it connects Boston/NYC/Philly/DC...four cities with very high population densities and where there's a huge amount of daily commuting between the cities. And it STILL can't pay for itself. Taxpayers shell out billions/yr to subsidize Amtrack. I'm afraid Dems will create many Amtrack-like solutions which will cost us far more in the long run than what we have now.

true that... but really amtrak has two things going against it. Culture and effectiveness. The first issue we need to overcome is our tie to our 'indepence', which is almost laughable these days to do gas prices. Secondly, the other issue with amtrak is that it's rather a pointless service at this point in time. It's costly, it's slow, and it's got a lot of lay over time. My roommate was taking a four hour ride back (about as fast as a car) to home, and waited for six hours at a stop.

I think the tie to independence will be overcome once we have an effective system in place. amtrak is not effective. Again, it's slow and costly. If we developed a bullet train that's faster than/as fast as taking a plane, and cheaper, there won't be as much opposition to running around on a train. The initial hump will be to reinvest and update a crumbling infrastructure, but I don't think that it will ultimately have the same issues as amtrak.

I agree on the culture issue. Actually, my preference would be a bi-partisan commission to take a hard look at alternative energy resources as well as how energy is used (transportation, manufacturing, home heating, etc.). Everything should be on the table at this point. I'd be very open to radical ideas as long as I'm convinced it's free of partisanship and as long as it's cost effective over the long run.

I can agree to that, but honestly, I think Obama is above partisan politics. I get the sense that this isn't just a talking point for him, but a solution to a rising issue.
Bi-partisan or not, honesty in politics is dwindling as lobbying increases. My main attraction to Obama is that he isn't bound by lobbyists. He rebukes corporate offers and looks to the people. If we can get the other politicians to do the same, we should be golden.

Cpt: Obama doesn't seem partisan, and is of a younger generation not obsessed with the hatreds of the 60s.
He has the potential to be a great president. But, he'll have to win in a landslide and to do that he's got to campaign/govern from the middle and not from the far left. As a black man he can bring the far left (blacks/white liberals) to heel while working with Dem/Rep moderates to get things done.
He should start by lampooning some Left wing sacred cows (eg Affirmative Action).

Cpt: I disagree. Unless something fundamental changes, BO will win with 53-58% of the vote. If he wants to be a transformative president, he'll need a MUCH higher share of the popular vote and an electoral landslide as well.
He can do it, but he has to get all the swing voters and even some moderate Reps to slide over. The only way is to take on some of the failed sacred cows of the Left. Given Obama-philia he can afford to do this without alienating his base.

Guess what? 67% of the people polled by Rasmussen AGREE with McCain on this issue. Just 18% do not. He flip-flopped because gas is now incredibly expensive, and it is killing millions of people around the U.S. I applaud him for changing his stance on this issue, and so will the electorate.
