  • I just found the CD for this game! I got the full version of this game with an issue of Computer Game Entertainment magazine. I bought a few issues before they folded and they all came with a few full games and demos. I was looking for the disc with another similar game that came with another issue but I can't find it :(

  • the graphix on this are quite impressie for a 1993 pc game, very pretty

  • I love the music from this game. I put on these videos sometimes just to hear it again. I especially like the music from Dug's house and the music at the eye screen.

  • This was a great game! I played it over and over...being a Xanth nut. I would love to play it again!

  • this game got me into piers anothony books

  • I played this game in the 90s on my 386 (or was it my Pentium 90?).. I got as far as the pirate dock and stopped playing. I've always wanted to know how the game ended. Thanks for this!

  • Whoa. Is that evil bitch Pia the main love intrest in this game?

  • So to start the adventure you are basically forced to choose the genetically corrupt mermaid.

  • Comment removed

  • where do you get this game

  • it's about time we had a good xanth game for xbox or the ps3. Something on par with GTA4 but with talents.

  • my favorite PC game ever

  • theres a book series called xanth

  • was that a question? LOL :)

of course there is a book series... that's how most of us learned of the game. In fact, the one the game is based on is called "Demons don't dream" and it was included with the game

  • no it was a statement... bink marries chamelion crap... i mean what kind of name is bink?! and a son named dor

  • This was one of my favorite games as a kid. Fucking amazing

  • i remembered this catapult scene. That was a great game indeed.

  • So its just like Demons don't dream.... crazy!

  • Yeah, I love that book!

  • this should be remade into a PS2 game. that would ROCK.

  • this game looks very interesting...I only wish there would be a version made on a newer disc for my computer.

    D:

I would've picked Jenny Elf. (well...actually...I'd only pick her if Sammy comes with her, because Jenny's talent doesn't seem quite as useful in-game)

thank you for uploading this video. I was wondering what the game looked like ^_^

  • I just found out that my sister has almost all of the Xanth novels so i'm powering through them. I'm up to like the 6th book now, Night Mare. I don't really have a favorite charector yet but i always get a chuckle out of Crombie. I don't know if its the mental image i get from seeing him twirl around or what.

  • Wow, I didn't know there was a game! But I remember the game was mentioned in 'The Color Of Her Panties', because I think Metria was roped into becoming a companion. The books are awesome, even though I've only read that one, Harpy Thyme, and Geis Of The Gargoyle. Where can you buy the game?

  • eerm ... nowhere I think. Better download it from some abandonware sites

  • @MartyMcFly42 Come on, man... it's like $15 from Amazon... It's really not such a bad price. Nice video by the way :-). Wait, I see you're in the Czech Republic... it may be more difficult than that to find. Oh well, if anyone in the US is wondering, you can find it there.

  • 1) Companions of Xanth is officially freeware.

    2) Shame on you marty. Still haven't scrubbed up on English and gone through those books yet. :P

  • Favorite Xanth Character. Grundy Golem. I would love to be able to talk to talk to any living thing.

  • He's fine, ain't he ?

"Well, it looks like you died." :-D

  • Awesome long live Xanth!

  • Long live youtube too, cause this is the only version of video from this game which is avalaible on whole internet. Which sucks :D

  • i would have picked metria over nada and jenny but thats only cuz metria is my favorite xanth character EVER

  • Hey man, it's a big disadvantage to not know Xanth books. But anyway, why I'm only one who posted videos from Xanth game here ? This game rocks, everybody knows it so why I'm first ... I'm confused :/

  • I agree. Love the series

  • Yeah, same as they did Terry Pratchett's books

    The Colour of Magic

    Light Fantastic

    Wyrd Sisters

    Reaper Man

    and Soul music.

    They were really great

  • When I read the book this game was based off of, I always thought that Dug was an idiot for choosing Nada Naga based SOLELY on the sexual attraction factor. I would've picked Jenny Elf over Nada any day, because I'm a "personality" kind of guy, and Jenny Elf was one of the nicest characters in the whole series. She would've made for much more interesting and thoughtful conversation, too. But, I'm probably the only young male who thinks that way. Unfortunately, like Dug, we tend to value "sexy."

  • I would choose Nada, but not because she's supposed to be incredibly hot. I would choose her because she can turn into a freaking SNAKE!

  • If it should by wise choice, I would choose Jenny Elf. For the reasons you posted. And for you, Kingzan - it's not just freaking snake, she's fuc*in' freakin' snake :D

And why Dug choose Nada in book ? For what reason ? I choose Nada in game cause I tried it before and Centaur and Jenny wasn't useful. I even didn't consider MEtria as possibility to win :) I'm still realistic

  • can you actually play the game if all you have for a system is windows xp or is it not compatible? i have been trying for years to find a copy of the game and just found a site to download it from but the computer wont seem to run it.. any suggestions?

  • I think it's not compatible. I wasn't using .exe file directly, but thru DosBox

  • i got this from an abandonware site after reading the first book, computer game in a computer game, its cool

  • I wasn't reading book series, but they said that this game is based on book "Demons don't dream"

  • Yeah, no other game, no movie. It's strange, he (Piers) wrote lot of books (like Tom Clancy did), but he has only ONE game ... (not like stupid Tom Clancy) ...

    it's just not fair (way)

By the way, I like these puns in this game :) and books too

  • My god this makes my eyes wet... I was SOOOO enthralled by this game when it came out... Remember I got a demo with some magazine or something... Awsome game!!!

  • Yeah, this video is supposed to bring back memories deeply hidden in mind ... :) This is good purpose

  • I'm touched by music in this game ... it simply great, no more words are needed

  • I will post new part soon. And, how do you like naming "Torn XX from XX" ? Can it be better ? I don't want to be boring with this 1/10, or part 1 from 10 ...

  • And the last one, do you know how to get these books ? Even if they will be in english language, I'm sure I'll be able to read them :)

And by books, I mean e-books too. I'll even prefer them.

By the way, time in my country is 18:36, what's yours ?

  • Go to wikipedia dot org and look up Xanth. There's an English article which will list the series numerically. From there, you can see if any online or local Czech book stores has them new or used. Failing that, there's always Amazon.

  • Ppl from Poland know him, we from Czech Republic know him, but not many others, cause ... I don'T know. Everyone knows J.R.R.Tolkien :-) for example too, but for other example.

You want to know how to convert music into a midi ? Why midi, when you can have wav => mp3 ;-) It's same as capturing videos, you can record sound track from game. I don't know exactly what shortcut is used (CTRL+F6 ?), but it works ... I listen to the music from Dune 2 by this :-)

  • I can record to MP3 with no problem. The reason I'd like MIDI is so my music software can read the notation. It would save me the headache of learning by ear.

  • Erm ... what's IMDB (I try to guess ... I-international/internet, M-?, D-database, B-books ? )

I asked for it, that's true ... cause you are the ones who know and I'm the man who don't know, but want to know :-D it's like for example Andrzej Sapkowski, great Polish fantasy writer, game The Witcher (Fall 2007) is based on his novels.

  • IMDB dot com = Internet Movie Database, which now lists the first Xanth book as a movie to be in production 2008.

  • oh i thought it Was in production... and the release was to be announced in 08... damn..., i dont wanna wait longer... it'll be the first time i can actually say "oh i read the book first"... ive seen so many movies that i found out after that it came from a book i didnt know of...

  • I just saw Terry Pratchetts Hogfather :) and I read the book in spring, so it's good. And strange is this thing: I saw it on youtube (!) this entire movie is separated on 22 parts :)

  • I think pre-production is the term right now.

  • :MrRedSG

Grundy Golem :-D I don't know your brain or thoughts, but I know mines. When there is said word "Golem", I imageni big fat creature made of clay. But this Golem seems to be ... shaped in different way :D. Anyway, I've just looked at 3:30-3:37 too and I must say, that I was little bit confused, I doesn't know what to do. I'm not familiar, but I want to be, cause these books must be great. I will mention it in next post to UN13

  • There's an entire book devoted to Grundy: 'Golem in the Gears'.

Piers Anthony is a great writer. Other books of his I recommend, if you're into sci-fi, are 'Hard Sell' and the 'Bio of a Space Tyrant' series.

  • I like sci-fi a lot :) mostly classics (Clarke, Aldiss, Herbert, Philip K. Dick...)

  • lol well actually grundy did start out made of string and clay, but it didnt decribe his physique or anything, just that he's only a few inches tall... but through magic he became real, and thats why he looks like that, they still call him 'golem' but he technically no longer is.... but i dont wanna ruin anything, just in case you plan to read any of them

  • Heh ... lol is here :D [shortcut]. I don't like this shortcut, cause lot of ppl (in my country) are using this and even don't know what it exactly means. Nor one of two possibilities, 1)Laughing out loud, or 2)Lot of laughs ...

But for this grundy, I forgot that he's mentioned in [mighty] Com-pendium. I'm still prepared to read these books, if I ever find them :)

  • Grundy won't appear until the second book, "Source of Magic." One of the best, in my humble opinion.

  • Also, go to IMDB's website and run a search for 'A Spell for Chameleon,' which is the first book in the series. A movie is scheduled for production next year.

  • One more thing: it's important to note that the main character enters the world looking like a computer monitor, which doesn't bother the citizens, who are used to oddball things.

Sorry for the post spam, but Marty asked for it. Literally. :P

  • Great game back in the day. I wish I could figure out how to convert its music files into readable midi format.

  • hi, unnamednewbie13. i wrote most of the music for this game, and have published many of the MIDI files (though they were tailored solely to the roland MT-32). if there's something particular you'd like, you're welcome to any file i wrote from the game. here are some:

    tinyurl*com/LegendMusic

the other main composer shouldn't be too hard to get hold of.

  • Thanks for the link. Companions of Xanth featured some of my favorite tracks of that decade in video games. Every now and then, bits of it playing through a Sound Blaster 16 will echo through my head.

They won't sound the same on this rig's audio, but I have an emulator on my desktop PC.

  • is there any were i can actually play this game like a site?

  • dunno of any.

  • Is it possible for me to obtain this game? I saw a friend with it years ago but can't find it anywhere on the internet. I would love to play it again =D If I remember correctly your character is a floating monitor... I love the series. Any help ?

  • it's available at the pirate bay, though you'll need bittorrent software to download.

  • hahaha thats so awesome... i played a game that played like this before and it kept me goin for a while so it must be fun... but i was about to ask how it related at all to the book (and i know you Marty arent too familiar with the series), but then it showed GRUNDY!!! i love grundy and his dry sense of humor in the book...

also the two scenes at 3:30 and 3:37 looked really similar to how i saw the roads in my head from the first book, when bink traveled through the forest :D

  • And what do you think ? Should I get there more of this game ? :) next parts ...

It's hard to get a time to it, cause Garry's mod costs me much time and math learning too

  • Piers Anthony's Xanth novels are the best in the world.

  • I try to get something from him :) ... cause this game is so good and you conviced me to its good ;-)

  • cool

  • Don't forget to read the book. The original box came with it.

  • *Man from Mundania

  • Oops, *Demons Don't Dream.

    Brainfart.

  • It was long time ago I had this box :D and not me, but my father ... it's gone now ;-)

  • Funny thing, it was my dad who purchased the game also. Eventually got me addicted to the series, and the books now take up prominent shelf area.

  • cool... im new to the xanth world, apparently my parents liked nerdy books before i was born, and i found them and my mom told me to try the xanth series... my dad wanted me to try "The Pendragon Cycle" trilogy....

but i just finished the third less than an hour ago, and it was amazing... things i questioned from the first book were finally answered in the end of the third XD

  • so this game is based on a particular book? is it in the xanth series?... i believe i plan to stop reading them after centaur isle (im on castle roogna right now)

  • Eeerm ... :-/ some of these guys are better to explain it then me ... I'm just gamer, I read just one book from Anthony

  • ok... yeah im not a reader either... the first of the series was the first book i've ever completed thats over like 80 pages lol

and im a gamer too... consol not pc

  • In my country, there isn't so many psx2-3, or even Xbox360 ... and few of Wii users (lol)

  • its all good, what country?

  • This game is based on 'Demons Don't Dream' (Xanth Vol.16), by Piers Anthony. The original game box was packaged with it.

  • I first played this game waaaay back, like '95 or so.

Then roughly 12 years later (a few months ago) I woke up with Grundy's theme song in my head, and reinstalled it.

It's just such a catchy tune!

  • :-D music in this game is good, you're right ... like in Dune 2, sad is, that there's no soundtrack for this game ... :- (

  • I know, that's a shame. I'd like to hear the majority of these songs redone with real instruments :D

  • This was done in game Duke Nukem 3d ... :) and that songs was pretty good

  • True. I must strongly agree ^_^

When I first saw this game in PC magazine in 1994 (or something like that). But I first played this game in 2004 :-( Sad, but even more I like it now. I was dissapointed, when I found nothing in city library from Anthony Pierce, writer of lot of Xanth books.

  • This is a great game. I still have it for my old Win 3.11 Computer. It was originally packaged with the 16th Xanth novel, "Demons Don't Dream", on which it is loosely based. Oh, and it's Piers Anthony, not Anthony Pierce--which may explain why your library doesn't seem to have any by him.

  • Sorry for my mistake, but this searching system is smart. Still nothing for Piers Anthony. But you must agree with me, that Anthony is first name too,but not in this case :)

There is only one book from Anthony:

    [I try to translate it]

Záblesk paměti / Piers Anthony ; From english translate Martin Janda. -- 1st release -- Prague : AG kult, 1991. -- 208 pages -- Name of original: Total Recall

    :-/ not Xanth

  • best adventure game i've ever played
