The soldier might suffer from minor bruises and cuts from the force of the round, but nothing serious.

They show DS but never test the current plates, also most of the people who tested have nothing invested in current systems, there have been several unofficial tests by different universities who just wanted to know if it was really that good and I believe there was someone at Penn State who attempted to recreate the plates and could not get them to match the supposed performance.

The fact is DS has been tested by the Army, The Air Force, and several independent labs and has failed to perform to it's claimed threat level in all of those. Pinnacle got it's ceramic from an Israeli company that was shown by several independent labs to be substandard than the same product offered by companies like Saint-Gobain and Ceradyne, density measurements put DS plates at being 10% more porous.

They could potentially reverse engineer it, and sell it to people we fight. The 5.56x45mm NATO round is horribly ineffective at piercing body armor. It would likely result in many American servicemen getting needlessly killed, for the sake of proving a point.
@Xephisto reverse engineering it? Most of the information needed to make it is already online. The only thing you can't really find online readily is the sintering temperatures and hot press pressures for how they make the plates, but even these are fairly standard processes which you can look up as needed to get a certain result. It's probably just because most american weapons and armor manufacturers are paid by the government to do projects in return for not selling to foreign countries.
i am wondering about why people think it is cheaper for the army to neglect to pay for Dragon Skin, but to pay someone disability or paying for hospital costs and rehab , is hugely expensive, If people would stop and think out their claims, it makes no sense. Dragon Skin armor out preforms Interceptor armor in every way... It is even lighter then the heavier, bulkier interceptor armor.

@passwordresetisbroke That's interesting you say that since with my personal experience of both armors Dragon Skin was lighter and gave me more mobility. Interceptor was heavier and limited my movements. Now ill give you that I never had a chance to test the effectiveness of Dragon Skin when it comes to stopping bullets, but I'll take the results of multiple privet organizations test of the one Army test where the Army generals in charge later went to work for the company that makes Interceptor.

Both sets of tests were questionable really, but it is a simple fact that more than half of pinnacles vests are defective, and that is in batches where they were checking the QA like hawks. In mass production, where they would have been manufactured and shipped much more shoddily. It is a frightening proposition.
Add to the fact that Dragon skin is incredibly vulnerable to mis handling during shipping and storage, to the point where the vests can lose much of thier protective ability...
Until they can prove definatively, and not with stacking things in thier favour as they have done thusfar, that Dragonskin works, I am very anti Pinnacle.

The best thing Pinnacle (Manufacturers of Dragon Skin) can do is get into discussion with US Aligned countries for their expression of interest. If the Amour is better then they will have sales and eventually US soldiers will get their hands on the product. It is fully known how military and civilian contracts are won in the US. How many Bucks you spend on putting deuchbags in Govt secures the contracts.

@andwhatelse im in the army and for the past 4 years or so ive been saving up for dragonskin armor after i saw what it could do and grandted yes its roughly $1000.00 for 1 its worth it. the huge advantage over interceptor is the fact that you can flex and bend in it 10x better then interceptor and when your fixing humvees like i am you have to be able to bend and flex when you have to get under then vehicle or reach down into the vehicle.
@dvdguire you should over time purchase more of the stuff so you can make a body suit out of it with some customisation so you can protect your limbs as well :)

Discs fell out of position after exposure to oil and extreme temperatures, which is why the armor test failed. The army soaks the armor in? gas as part of its test to see if the armor can hold up under all possible battlefield conditions i.e. oil, high and low temps, saltwater.
Pinnacle should sew each disc in place instead of gluing them, fixing the problem.
Some say sewing the discs into the vest would be a sewing nightmare. Depends how you do it.

The easy way is to sew each disc into its own pouch, then stitch them to the vest like buttons. Relatively straightforward and no adhesive is needed.
Hence they would stay in place regardless of oil/saltwater immersion and high/low temperatures, thus passing the standard military armor test and removing the single major obstacle for fielding the armor.

before you buy dragonskin go buy the $40.00 solution - entrenching tool. A well dug foxhole gives better protection. Remember your helmet is not rifle proof and when you go prone you are almost protectionless.

Dragon Skin was tested by the NIJ at angles of 0, 30, 45, 53, 55, and 60 degrees obliquity. The shots were also placed where the discs overlap. No penetrations, no failures. The ceramic SAPI plates only get tested at 0 degrees obliquity. In fact, NIJ had to develop entirely new test procedures and protocols for a flexible body armor system.
I think it has something to do with the angle of which the armor is hit. If the bullet is able to slide under the plates without slowing down too much, the plates would be non-exisistant.
However, I would take the risk of someone shooting from under me to get the benefit of stopping everything infront of me.

Im not saying that body armor is worthless, im saying is that in todays warfare, the war aint won in the battlefield. Ground troops these days plays a minor role than before, because a stealth bomber (for example) could easily destroy a weapons factory or a the enemies food supply. Another great example would be the American civil war. The north won, not because it had better soldiers, but because it destroyed the souths railroads and weapons factory, as while as limiting their food supply.
Warfare is different yes, but maybe not in the sense that you think. The shift is not toward these techno giants that cost billions of dollars a pop, but toward the super fast, super cheap, super small; something that a field soldier with minimal training can "fire and forget." This is how successful guerrilla tactics are, and we've seen how devastating they have been against us. Sometimes disruption is just a destructive as cessation.
the m4a1 is not an old school system...they might just want to upgrade to the ags piston uppers and save millions. Though, the colts are battle proven and are by far awesome rifles. The m16 platform is not oldschool, just needs re doing.

They show DS but never test the current plates, also most of the people who tested have nothing invested in current systems, there have been several unofficial tests by different universities who just wanted to know if it was really that good and I believe there was someone at Penn State who attempted to recreate the plates and could not get them to match the supposed performance.

The fact is DS has been tested by the Army, The Air Force, and several independent labs and has failed to perform to it's claimed threat level in all of those. Pinnacle got it's ceramic from an Israeli company that was shown by several independent labs to be substandard than the same product offered by companies like Saint-Gobain and Ceradyne, density measurements put DS plates at being 10% more porous.

If you get shot and the bullet penetrates while you're wearing the Interceptor vest, it's not the vest that failed it's the hard armor insert, and the companies(plural, again you guys act like interceptor is only made by one company) that make the vest have nothing to do with manufacturing the inserts (which again there are at least 3 companies the military buys SAPI's from).

They could potentially reverse engineer it, and sell it to people we fight. The 5.56x45mm NATO round is horribly ineffective at piercing body armor. It would likely result in many American servicemen getting needlessly killed, for the sake of proving a point.

The only thing you can't really find online readily is the sintering temperatures and hot press pressures for how they make the plates, but even these are fairly standard processes which you can look up as needed to get a certain result. It's probably just because most american weapons and armor manufacturers are paid by the government to do projects in return for not selling to foreign countries.

i am wondering about why people think it is cheaper for the army to neglect to pay for Dragon Skin, but to pay someone disability or paying for hospital costs and rehab , is hugely expensive, If people would stop and think out their claims, it makes no sense. It has not passed the Army tests so i am going to trust them. It is in there best interest to keep our troops healthy.

@Rileyman2rr I'm in the military and I can tell you, they do not always buy the better equipment... this kind of contracting happens all the time with higher ups, they are looking at retirement and want more money, so they side with the companies that will give them a high paying job once they are no longer in the military. Dragon Skin armor out preforms Interceptor armor in every way... It is even lighter then the heavier, bulkier interceptor armor.

Add to this fact that more than half of the units they make are defective to some degree, often dangerously so.
And lighter? 35 for interceptor L, 50 for a dragon skin XL (Dragon skin XL = Interceptor L fitting wise.)
Pinnacle are selling an inferior defective product and are trying to hype it up in the media.

Interceptor was heavier and limited my movements. Now ill give you that I never had a chance to test the effectiveness of Dragon Skin when it comes to stopping bullets, but I'll take the results of multiple privet organizations test of the one Army test where the Army generals in charge later went to work for the company that makes Interceptor.

Both sets of tests were questionable really, but it is a simple fact that more than half of pinnacles vests are defective, and that is in batches where they were checking the QA like hawks. In mass production, where they would have been manufactured and shipped much more shoddily. It is a frightening proposition.
Add to the fact that Dragon skin is incredibly vulnerable to mis handling during shipping and storage, to the point where the vests can lose much of thier protective ability...

The best thing Pinnacle (Manufacturers of Dragon Skin) can do is get into discussion with US Aligned countries for their expression of interest. If the Amour is better then they will have sales and eventually US soldiers will get their hands on the product. It is fully known how military and civilian contracts are won in the US. @andwhatelse im in the army and for the past 4 years or so ive been saving up for dragonskin armor after i saw what it could do and grandted yes its roughly $1000.00 for 1 its worth it. the huge advantage over interceptor is the fact that you can flex and bend in it 10x better then interceptor and when your fixing humvees like i am you have to be able to bend and flex when you have to get under then vehicle or reach down into the vehicle.

Murray Neal should stop whining and trying to "fight the system," instead he needs to fix the ROOT of the problem, the adhesive.
Discs fell out of position after exposure to oil and extreme temperatures, which is why the armor test failed. The army soaks the armor in? gas as part of its test to see if the armor can hold up under all possible battlefield conditions i.e. oil, high and low temps, saltwater.
Pinnacle should sew each disc in place instead of gluing them, fixing the problem.

Some say sewing the discs into the vest would be a sewing nightmare. Depends how you do it.

The easy way is to sew each disc into its own pouch, then stitch them to the vest like buttons. Relatively straightforward and no adhesive is needed.
Hence they would stay in place regardless of oil/saltwater immersion and high/low temperatures, thus passing the standard military armor test and removing the single major obstacle for fielding the armor.

Look at the test of the dragon skin interceptor test on youtube and i bet you can't find one with interceptor. I was in the Army nad i can tell you that a lot of my service was me and the unit being lied to. so this interview doesn't suprise me in the least. Give it to our fucked up corrupt goverment to keep up with its stupid contracts. It isn't the government officials sons or daughters getting killed so fuck the regular joe or jane smoe right... how about you put them up at the plate with shit armor that cracks after one bullet. i bet they would send them out with dragon skin if it was thier kid.

How are they honestly going to say it failed miserably... m-16 ak47 mp5 and a direct grenade blast and nothing went through!!!!!!!!!! one 9mm round on intercepter and its going in.... plus it depends on what angle youre getting hit too. so if one round at the wrong angle and interceptor ont work... then what you ave one dead soldier. I've seen it so don't tell me otherwise.

I think the most appropriate test would be for Mark Browns to wear the vests and be the one who is being tested on since he seems so fucking confident in the intercepter bullshit :/
First test: One full clip from an AK-47 unloaded on Mark Browns in interceptor armor, then of course in dragonskin, even if it has to be placed on his dead body. I'd bet his corpse would be safe!

Theres obviously a cover up behind this, Its been tested on future weapons, ordered by the CIA, Special forces (I belive from another commenter) and Secret Service.... It was on the news, and it was bannded before it was even tested because "He was aware that it hadnt been tested" Anyone seeing what i mean?

The army hasnt given any proof of any of their claims. The heat they said was required for the glue to fail is insane. 160 fahrenheit is an insane heat, in that heat your least worries is failing body armor. Its 71 celsius for crying out loud. The heath required might even be higher. So thats a rubbish argument.

What did they do when they tested dragon skin? Load a browning 50 cal. with API rounds and unload a box on it and then see that a couple shots made it through and say it failed?

Dragon Skin was tested by the NIJ at angles of 0, 30, 45, 53, 55, and 60 degrees obliquity. The shots were also placed where the discs overlap. No penetrations, no failures. The ceramic SAPI plates only get tested at 0 degrees obliquity. In fact, NIJ had to develop entirely new test procedures and protocols for a flexible body armor system.

how does dragon skin fail their test if it withholds from a ton ( 60+ rounds ) of ak47 fire and some while kevlar blocks about 5 or less

I think it has something to do with the angle of which the armor is hit. If the bullet is able to slide under the plates without slowing down too much, the plates would be non-exisistant.
However, I would take the risk of someone shooting from under me to get the benefit of stopping everything infront of me.

Fuck body armor for know. We need to focus on on better rifles and helicopters. I mean M4 carbines and M16s are old school. Other militaries like Mexico are already replacing their M4 pieces of shit and upgrading to FX-05 or G36.

the one that is still alive is the one that wins. Body armor keeps people alive. The weapon is almost meaningless. ANY gun will kill someone who isn't protected.

Im not saying that body armor is worthless, im saying is that in todays warfare, the war aint won in the battlefield. Ground troops these days plays a minor role than before, because a stealth bomber (for example) could easily destroy a weapons factory or a the enemies food supply. Another great example would be the American civil war. The north won, not because it had better soldiers, but because it destroyed the souths railroads and weapons factory, as while as limiting their food supply.

Warfare is different yes, but maybe not in the sense that you think. The shift is not toward these techno giants that cost billions of dollars a pop, but toward the super fast, super cheap, super small; something that a field soldier with minimal training can "fire and forget." This is how successful guerrilla tactics are, and we've seen how devastating they have been against us. Sometimes disruption is just a destructive as cessation.

the m4a1 is not an old school system...they might just want to upgrade to the ags piston uppers and save millions. Though, the colts are battle proven and are by far awesome rifles. The m16 platform is not oldschool, just needs re doing.
