@SupernalOne Yeah, it is sort of "Beck"ish, now that you mention it. Isaac tends towards over-production, imho, but I'm guessing you thought of him because of this funky-ass groove. Power to the Peaceful, Don in Michigan.
right, cool delivery and funk guitar, sort of like Beck riffing on Shaft -- nice, but so obviously retro - is it homage, or satire, or rip-off? Still, it looks fun to play :)
Lyrically, the Roses p*ssed anything Oasis ever wrote. Just listen to this tune and give me one Oasis track that even comes close to this piece of lyrical work.
I hear this song and all I can think of is Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels..."GIVE ME THE PHONE! GIVE ME THE PHONE!" "YOU'LL BREAK IT, BE CALM FOR A MINUTE, SHUT UP AND GIVE ME THE NUMBER!" "WILL YOU SHUT IT IT'S F***ING RINGING!!!"
I feel like the Stone Roses were the jane's addiction equivalent to the U.K. not the same mind you, the equivalent. Both bands were equally funky, sexual, and ground breaking in the late 80s/early 90s and so many bands owe their success to the success of both those bands.
@Xero370 I'm 37, the first time I saw this video was on MTV's 120 Minutes back in 1990. If you like this, listen to "The Only One I Know" by The Charlatans, "Loaded" by Primal Scream, "Step On" by Happy Mondays, "Groovy Train" by The Farm, "International Bright Young Thing" by Jesus Jones, the cover of "I'm Free" by the Soup Dragons, "Unbelievable" by EMF, "Two Worlds Collide" by Inspiral Carpets... that sound was called "Baggy". More recent baggy is "We Used to be Friends" by The Dandy Warhols
@Xero370 Could people please stop saying that "it's better than today's crap etc." There was a lot of crap back in the day too; it's just that the crap from the past didn't survive. The music that did survive are by definition classics. People listen to these classics and are deluded into thinking that the music of the past was somehow better.
@Dweezer123 Yeah, I'm sure. You're are also mixing up the names, It's John Squier (guitarist) and Ian Brown (vocals). The Stone Roses released their second and last album the same year, 94', that oasis released their first album (definitely maybe). You must have gotten them mixed up. Nevertheless, they were both great bands.
It's you that needs to check the facts! Oasis were out at least 2 years before the stone roses! I like the roses (probably more than oasis!) but there's no doubt they were heavily influenced by oasis's Definitely maybe album!
@Dweezer123 Sorry to break it to you, but the Stone Roses debut self titled album (one of the greatest albums ever) was released in 89'... Definitely maybe was released in 94'. Noel has said countless times that he used to sneak into venues to see the Stone Roses play in Manchester when he was like 13.
@Dweezer123 It's hilarious and ironic that you're telling anyone to "check the facts" when you clearly haven't done so yourself. The Stone Roses started in 1983 and Oasis wasn't formed until 1991. It was The Stones Roses that influenced Oasis not the other way around like you ignorantly stated. If you have no idea what you're talking about then refrain from perpetuating misinformation on public forums.
People need to remember that oasis and the smiths were the pioneers of this kind of 'indie' music, and the stone roses (even though they were decent) were just tagging along in a way
you douchebags there not gettin back together mani has denied it already he said ian and john made up thats all there is to it and still no hope of a reunion!!!!
I'd have to agree dweezer123, but there are some v good bands from Manchester too like happy Mondays, the hollies, the smiths . Not many others though.
Liverpool produce all the best music! The Beatles, lightning seeds, stone roses, the coral, cast, Elvis Costello, echo and bunnymen, etc etc, the list goes on!
Just heard this being sampled horribly on "examples" new song and had to come back here to help erase it from my memory. Being young in the 90s must have been awesome...
I know my music and I can categorically say that I have never heard of Manchester music being called 'madchester'. Fair points on the other stuff pemryisadude, but I found an article on the Internet about the stone roses being from an area of Liverpool called croxteth, didn't find much on them being from manchester.
And it doesn't say Allardice, and there is no slum in Liverpool called Allardice. Even if there was the Roses wouldn't know about it because they're from Manchester!
I listened to and followed this music in the 90s and 80s when it was around- I didn't find info from Wikipedia! You are basing your view on where they are from on their songs- as any proper Mancunian would know there is a rivalry between the Scousers and us- probably what that song is about. Even if it's not about that, it dosen't mean they're from Liverpool- they can write about anywhere they want!
Country House is by Blur not Pulp. And in a video about the Stone Roses do you think they're going to get someone in talking about Guns and Roses. Think about it, do Oasis sound like they were influenced by Guns and Roses. Oasis were influenced by the Stone Roses, and the Roses were not influenced by the Happy Mondays, they had the same influences as they were part of the Madchester scene in the late 80s and early 90s. Either you guys are pissing about (I really hope so) or you ment
Do you remember that big rivalry oasis had in the nighties with 'pulp'?! That was brilliant! .........live in a house, a really big house in the country!.....
Been listening to a lot more stone roses songs on YouTube, glad cus there mostly v good but u can really here the oasis and even happy Mondays influence on a lot of them
Can't find out what the proper name is of that song is! Anyway Noel in his interview is referring to the American band 'guns and roses' as an influence!
Just found out that you are actually wrong dweezer123, the song is called Mersey paradise (I thought it was Mersey allardice too, maybe it does sing Mersey allardice though at one point).
Does anyone know if allardice is in Liverpool? And why would they be singing about the Mersey if they were from Manchester - think before u speak
Huddersfield is about as much Manchester as Salford is! And I think you will find it's Ian squires! I've looked into it and he changed it to John, when Ian brown joined the group to avoid confusion. Salford in Manchester! You make me laugh. Glynus roach is the only one here with any brains!
You retards the Roses are from Manchester!! Search into YouTube - Stone Roses Spike Island (first option) it's a short clip about their performance in which Noel Gallagher is interviewed and says he was there and inspired by the Roses. Oasis played Spike Island after the Roses. And DweezerTwat they were not supported by The Roses and Noel Gallagher would shit himself laughing if you told him he gave Ian Brown (not Ian Squire, the guitarist is called John Squire) his big break- stop
The drummer is hilarious. I am kind suprised at the high humber of views. But I guess every odd niche band has their following. A good groove in the song.
@floron1963 they arent an odd niche band! they are the godfathers of brit pop, maybe you are american because they weren't that big over there so perhaps they were a niche but over here they were pretty big I'd say.
Fairly sure Sam allardice never managed Liverpool, think it was Blackburn or Blackpool he managed for a few years, allardice will be one of the rough suburbs of Liverpool probably
Well Im from manchester and It doesnt really matter whether oasis played at spike island or not (as it happens they did), the point is that oasis must have been a big influence on the up and coming stone roses. Anyway, manchester (oasis) beats liverpool (scouser stone roses) everytime. Up the mancs
Are you mental? Oasis played at spike island! It's what made them famous! The stone roses were their support act! Noel gave Ian squires his big break at that very event!
Fool's Gold did come out in 94 but their first album came out in 89 by which time Ian Brown had already got his classic style. The Roses did not copy Oasis, and Noel Gallagher has said interviews that he really wanted to be in a rock and roll band having seen THE STONE ROSES live at Spike Island. Just admit you were wrong
Thank you glynus. People need to check the facts before typing garbage! Anyway how old is Liam gallager? 42? 43? That Ian squires from the stone roses is only in his early 30's! The stats speak for themselves!
@Dweezer123 OK before i rebuke to this allow me to state that I am a fan of both Oasis AND the Stone Roses, that being said the second reissue of fools gold came out in 1995 not 94 the first reissue in 90 and the original release in 89. Ian BROWN was born in 63 making him 48 and JOHN squire was born in 62 , he'll be turning 49 this year so alas i have to conclude that either you suffer from some sort of delirium or you Dweezer123 are one sarcastic mofo!!!
I've just done some research, fools gold was released in 1994. Oasis were around b4 this! They were a band called the rain in 1992! Proof that the stone roses copied oasis style! Anyway oasis are miles better then those cockneys wannabes!
@GlynusRoach clearly you decided to skip his advice about the research.. as if you had, you'd know better than to continue to post about Ian copying Liam, shm...
I just mean in his mannerisms on stage, seems to have copied of Liam Gallagher, I'm not saying he's better or anything. Don't forget oasis were around as early as 1993/1994
@GlynusRoach this band was so brilliant and way to young...and a lot more talent then Liam Gallagher has...Noel is a different story lol...these boys were in their teens...tight and talented but couldn't deal and split...should have been a super group
@kyleadams03 Very rare like you a young age love Stone Roses, you have good taste! I don't like Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga & Miley Cyrus. Their music is shallow and moron!
@kyleadams03 who gives a flyin fuck wat age u are music is music doesnt mean ur great cos ur 16 and u listen 2 them. stone roses arethe best band ever every 1 loves them
@89adzer Did I say anything about being 'great'? Don't cry your eyes out. I just stated I prefer it to modern day music which is covering the music channels and radios today.
I use this song before every rugby match: it gets me peaceful and concentrated, it's kind of hypnothic. Great song, I wish there still be bands like this one

Ian BROWN was born in 63 making him 48 and JOHN squire was born in 62 , he'll be turning 49 this year so alas i have to conclude that either you suffer from some sort of delirium or you Dweezer123 are one sarcastic mofo!!!

Dweezer 123 a guy with a bit of sense for once
GlynusRoach 10 months ago
I've just done some research, fools gold was released in 1994. Oasis were around b4 this! They were a band called the rain in 1992! Proof that the stone roses copied oasis style! Anyway oasis are miles better then those cockneys wannabes!
Dweezer123 10 months ago
These guy came out in the late 80,s and Oasis came out in 92-93 ish. So no one is copying anyone

I like to smoke to this.
abducteddonut 10 months ago
I don't need to do research to see if the two styles are similar, u are not making sense. Guns and roses look like they have copied of oasis
GlynusRoach 10 months ago
smh, I meant to say...
chanceska 10 months ago
Clearly this came after most of the oasis stuff though
GlynusRoach 10 months ago
@GlynusRoach clearly you decided to skip his advice about the research.. as if you had, you'd know better than to continue to post about Ian copying Liam, shm...
chanceska 10 months ago
But clearly this is copying Liam as it came after most oasis stuff
GlynusRoach 10 months ago
I just mean in his mannerisms on stage, seems to have copied of Liam Gallagher, I'm not saying he's better or anything. Don't forget oasis were around as early as 1993/1994
GlynusRoach 10 months ago
the next best thing...... the complete stone roses @ the venue derby 8/4/2011

Baggy trousers, baggy shirts. Is it any wonder so many of us ended up bag heads!
jms55ward 10 months ago
The lead singer seems like a rip-off of Liam Gallagher to me.
GlynusRoach 10 months ago
@GlynusRoach this band was so brilliant and way to young...and a lot more talent then Liam Gallagher has...Noel is a different story lol...these boys were in their teens...tight and talented but couldn't deal and split...should have been a super group

Yeah and I'm 1 and i love this music, nah i'm 15 and love all old music..but alot of teens do xD So not much point in bragging about it
EllenFieldingBrown 10 months ago
I'm 16, but I love Stone Roses and similar bands from the 80/90's era much more than the modern day shit that is spouted out today.
No autotuning, no gimmicks, just a brilliant band.
kyleadams03 10 months ago 23
@kyleadams03 Very rare like you a young age love Stone Roses, you have good taste! I don't like Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga & Miley Cyrus. Their music is shallow and moron!
mystyehyphen 10 months ago
@kyleadams03 who gives a flyin fuck wat age u are music is music doesnt mean ur great cos ur 16 and u listen 2 them. stone roses arethe best band ever every 1 loves them
89adzer 9 months ago
@89adzer Did I say anything about being 'great'? Don't cry your eyes out. I just stated I prefer it to modern day music which is covering the music channels and radios today.
