slimiz, sorry to reply to ur 2 yr old post, but there's a very high chance that Hang Tuah, Jebat, etc are Muslim Chinese sent by the Chinese Emperor at that time to protect Melaka. Even one of my Malay teacher told us that she once read an article about Hang Tuah's Chinese origin, which was around 20 yrs ago or so. But that article can be found nowhere anymore, well, u know, maybe to cover their real identity. Actually until today u can still never find Malays with such name, only Chinese.
I have debated about this many many times. Please read my comment lists. To cut it short, all of the comments i received about the Hangs being Chinese are completely baseless and untrue. No reliable resources, no researches are made.

Slimiz, there are many Chinese with the surname Hang, not Ang. Maybe i can accept that Malays have name like Jebat, Tuah.. but Leking or Lekiu?? It's almost close to impossible. And plus u can't explain the presence of the name "Hang" in front. It's juz almost like Hang Li Po. And no, the behind name can't be totally similar, juz like how Wong is used to represent Huang and Cheng Ho is Zheng He.
Hang is a term given by the rulers back then. It is used only for honor. And besides, about Hang Li Poh, it was stated that the term Hang was only given to Li Poh after she arrived in Malacca and rumour has it, it was after she saved or helped Tun Perak during the civil war in Malacca. And Hang Tuah & co., does not born with the name Hang. It was a status given by the rulers just like the term Sultan, Temenggong, Baginda and etc for their bravery.
So can u explain why we don't see the name Hang anymore in these modern days? We still have Sultan. And u still can't explain about the lekir/lekiu part. They sound nothing like Malays' name.

The name may not be used in Names, but in Terengganu / Kelantan, people are calling each other Hang. And when i went there, never once i heard a Chinese person called anyone Hang.

About the names, there is a thing called manipulation. Lets say my name is Ali. Using the methods of manipulation, i will say, the name Ali is not Malay but Chinese as it sounds more like Ah Lee which is common in Chinese names.
So yes, manipulation in history is common as history is written by the victors. We may never know.

slimiz, sorry to reply to ur 2 yr old post, but there's a very high chance that Hang Tuah, Jebat, etc are Muslim Chinese sent by the Chinese Emperor at that time to protect Melaka. Even one of my Malay teacher told us that she once read an article about Hang Tuah's Chinese origin, which was around 20 yrs ago or so. But that article can be found nowhere anymore, well, u know, maybe to cover their real identity. Actually until today u can still never find Malays with such name, only Chinese.

Slimiz, there are many Chinese with the surname Hang, not Ang. Maybe i can accept that Malays have name like Jebat, Tuah.. but Leking or Lekiu?? It's almost close to impossible. And plus u can't explain the presence of the name "Hang" in front. It's juz almost like Hang Li Po. And no, the behind name can't be totally similar, juz like how Wong is used to represent Huang and Cheng Ho is Zheng He.

Hang is a term given by the rulers back then. It is used only for honor. And besides, about Hang Li Poh, it was stated that the term Hang was only given to Li Poh after she arrived in Malacca and rumour has it, it was after she saved or helped Tun Perak during the civil war in Malacca. And Hang Tuah & co., does not born with the name Hang. It was a status given by the rulers just like the term Sultan, Temenggong, Baginda and etc for their bravery.

About the names, there is a thing called manipulation. Lets say my name is Ali. Using the methods of manipulation, i will say, the name Ali is not Malay but Chinese as it sounds more like Ah Lee which is common in Chinese names.
So yes, manipulation in history is common as history is written by the victors. We may never know.
