The photo is of this island near japan, where there is an active volcano. They pay people to live there to study the effects of long term exposure to elevated sulfur levels, but corpses aren't much good, so when it gets to lethal levels, everyone has to mask up, just like this.

@Theocrati Good explanation but incorrect. The photo was taken from an exodus from an area that was bombarded by mustard gas. This is the result of a German attack in The Great War/WWI

i guess the artist who made this piece thinks war makes us less human, thats why he covered up the faces.
