  • MAAAAAAAN I SAID GET ON DOWN TO DA BOOGIE. DONT TRY TO JIVE ME U JIVE ASS TURKEY!!!!!!!!!!

  • marktard - get your stamp collecting album out and and go back to pimple spotting you fuckin waste of good air

  • marktard you need to learn some manners starting off with an insulting opener to me - i love stevie and have played arranged and transcribed loads of his early stuff - that's right dough head

  • u can not tell me that they not jammin!!!!!!!

  • @glennonful okay dummy, first off the guitarist is michael sembello he played on the record. secondly, this was recorded in 73 the song wasnt released till songs in the key of life in 76 so you cant really say he 'fucked up the written segment'.. sometimes musicians change up songs when they do them live, it still sounds awesome get over it

  • i always thought it would've been awesome if stevie had collaborated with frank zappa and captain beefheart. imagine what they could've come up with together!

  • I have a cd someone made for me with this tune on it, it runs about 15min & Stevie plays some killer Jazz improvation on Fender Rhodes it was recorded live in Paris in 74.

  • @radmason can i get an mp3? o_O

  • this is an absolute mockery of a great piece of music - the guitarist hasn't a fuckin clue - he completely fucks up the written segment on the record - instead he tries to busk it - stevie should have stopped the tune and kicked him off the banstand

  • Great jam! But couldn't they have gotten a live audience instead of cardboard cut-outs?

  • @hankaaron1961 germans man. what do ya expect?

  • That was yummy!

  • You don't wanna get a cooch contusion.

  • Man, this is a jam!

  • if this is on DVD i would like to cop it.

  • la wea pulenta!!!!1

  • this is like alot faster than the oringial tune

  • Wow look at Deneice williams she was dope then!

  • the Drummer is a Beast, killin them drums GodDAyum!!!!

  • Thanks so much for posting this. I saw this performance on VH1 back in the 90s and it took me forever to find this song, mostly because I didn't know its title. I assumed if Contusion was either in SW's Talking Book or Innervisions albums, but had no luck finding the song. Didn't occur to me he recorded it for an album 3 years later!

    Again, thanks!

  • Freaking love this track!!!! As well the live 75 version! Drummer and guitar killed it and loves it when Stevie feels the music

  • stevie at his best!

  • Damn this is a super fast version...better a little slowed down like on Key of Life.....

  • I fucking love this song, The chill melody, then BAM it gets all crazy and upbeat!

  • When you ask someone to name a Stevie Wonder tune, this probably isn't what first comes to most folk's minds ;)

Tough tune to pull off live, let alone at that tempo!

  • Johnnie Walker is my best friend!. Most of the great Stevie stuff we see is uploaded by Johnnie, thanks my man!

  • I dare anyone, I mean ANYONE, to find a group today that can play genius material like this track.

  • @PelicanGuy Check out George Duke

  • Is that a very young Michael Sembello on lead guitar?

  • There's an unknown Deniece Williams playing tamborine and background singer.

  • Duane Allman on guitar?

  • A TRUE jazz-fusion classic. I just put the original on my iPod recently!

  • yeah Orange Amps!

  • Absolutely stunning! It almost sounds like Stevie decided right there on the spot to play "Contunsion". And it's a great version. I always thought this would have been a perfect cover for the group "Van Halen". Stevie (and Wonderland I guess) proves me right.

  • come see the fan made music video of Stevie Wonder - Contusion at my page. drop a comment.

  • wowowowowowowoowowowhh!!!

  • Written by Michael Sembello , as was " Saturn " also on Songs In The Key Of Life .

  • F$@*king awesome. Thank you so much for sharing it.

  • Musicians:

    Ollie Brown - Drums

    Reggie McBride - Bass

    Mike Sembello - Guitar, Synth

    Marlo Henderson - Guitar, percussions

The "Wonderlove" ft Deniece Williams - Backing Vocals

  • @modernist02 Thank you!! I was wondering who the rest of the band (other than Sembello and Wonderlove) were. There were a tight group.

  • who's the guitar player with the semi hollow?

  • Comment removed

  • @jjeffrey886 wait...marlo henderson is black....right? I mean the other one

  • Comment removed

  • @LazyHammond91 The one and only Mike Sembello!

  • Holy Moses! SO FUNKY!

  • Damn what a song! Thanx for posting the live version!

  • This version sounds like hell! Thats just my opinion.

  • I'm just glad I grew up with this kind of music

  • It's Terrific!!!!

  • Steely Dan got all over this. You hear it?

  • thanks johnnie for posting these awesome videos, stevie wonder and his band and back singers are off the chain. w.o.w

  • The drummer is Ollie Brown. Wonderlove was off the chain in the 70s. Ray parker Jr.also played with them at one point.

  • That is Michael Sembello. The lady with the tambourine is Deniece Williams.

  • didn't know slash played with stevie wonder. haha.

  • funk...

  • THIS IS SUM HEAVY FUSION !!!

  • Just when you think You Tube can never shock you again--Bam! Contusion live?! Wow!!!!!

  • Michael Sembello on guitar/keys

  • dT DRmmer is a beast!

  • wow, i think u are right!

  • note the lead guitar player has no clue what song they are playing until about 00:30... lol. I don't think he heard Stevie call out Contusion ....

  • @tzotzo I just read his new bio SIGNED SEALED DELIVERED and Stevie was known for doing that all the time. Just randomly playing music as the band catches up. I noticed it too.

  • @tzotzo Typical jazz player: "Just play, I'll figure it out. And if I play a 'wrong note', it'll just add color" Haha, I wish the melody was more prominent in the head, even when that guy does play he doesn't really fit with his "jazz tone"

  • @tzotzo think he was waiting for his bit to start, really funny though.. been there.. nearly every gig :)

  • @tzotzo WHO IS THE LEAD GUITARIST?

  • @tzotzo WHO IS THE LEAD GUITARIST?,WAIT,IS IT MIKE SEMEBELLO?(did I spell his last name right?)

  • Stevie Wonder can do no wrong! This instrumental is one of my all-time faves. Thank you so much for sharing. :)

  • Stevie Wonder the true King of good music

  • Always liked this tune. Remember trying to learn it (never got it yet LOL).

  • It can't be from 1973 - the song was released on 1976 "Songs in the Key of Life".

  • Exactly...kinda the point of how he had already had this song and was playing it before he recorded it in '76.

  • I am thinking this song was maybe recorded in 1973 ish....and just re released 1976...maybe? from the fashions and hairsyles, it looks 1973....just a guess from me....i was born in 1971 lol

  • The video is from 1973, so he had it written, not sure if it was actually recorded at that time.

  • @johnniewalker23 Probably not.. notice the guitar is playing a totally different guitar line than in the studio recording.. they probably played it live a few times and polished it up and put it on innervisions

  • @johnniewalker23 ooops typo, Songs in the key of life**

  • @johnniewalker23 This song he distributed it in 1976

  • @teeemack Accoriding to the liner notes on Songs in the Key of LIfe (if I recall) Stevie wrote this after he woke up form the coma after the car accident in 73'.

  • @FrankyDooDy0 artists frequently play songs before they are recorded so who knows...

  • @FrankyDooDy0 This song is also in the introduction of the great 75 live in New York city.

  • @FrankyDooDy0 As you can see, Deneice Williams is in the background playing the tambourine. She left Stevie's band in 1975 and her solo album came out in 1976, so 1973 is the correct year. He was promoting the INNERVISIONS album.

  • @MrHill3000 Right, I was wrong :) Thanks for the info!

  • @MrHill3000 But Contusion isn't from Innervisions, it's from Songs in the Key of Life.

  • @MrHill3000 But Contusion isn't from Innervisions, it's from Songs in the Key of Life.

  • @MrHill3000 also micheal sembello playing guitar

  • @FrankyDooDy0 Yes it can... My Parents were at his Rainbow gig in 73 and he used this as JAM to warm up at the start of the gig along with band solos

  • i love stevie!!!

  • oh and what is this from?

  • This is on songs in the key of life, just before sir duke comes on

  • It's from a show he did in Germany many years ago.

  • this is absolutely sick!

  • This was my first Jazz tune I loved as a child.

  • Michael Sembello guitar is great.

  • Yeah, and Reggie McBride on bass ain't too shabby either.

  • and as a drummer. I tip my hat to the drummer in this...AWESOME manipulation of the stix! DAYUM!

  • Wow...now this is 73...and we didn't get Contusion on vinyl till 76 on Songs in the Key of Life...

And I always said Stevie should make a jazz lp...it would be a HOT seller!

  • His place is among the GODS. Bless Him.

  • wow this was before i was released on Song in the key of life

  • I just found a live recording of a concert he did in London back in '71 where he was performing this. Will have to post it.
